Ding beats Davis to win UK title

Ding Junhui lived up to his rich promise by beating Steve Davis 10-6 to win the UK Championship title.

The 18-year-old Chinese sensation became the first non-British or Irish winner of the prestigious York event.

Trailing 5-3 at the interval, Davis fought back at the start of the evening session in his 100th career final.

But Ding managed to match the six-times world champion in some epic safety exchanges before potting his way to a deserved and memorable victory.

There was pre-match talk that Ding might struggle to handle the tactical nous of an opponent 30 years his senior.

But he consistently coped with the best safety Davis had to offer and answered with even better positional play of his own.

And veteran Davis was left to tap the table in appreciation regularly in a match lacking in century breaks but not quality.

Ding's third-frame 111 proved to be the highest of the match, although he sunk countless pressure pots to clinch frames.

The key problem for Davis was his break-building.

"I didn't make the most of my breaks and kept slipping out of position," he told BBC Sport afterwards.

"But he played fantastic. I've had a great week, but Ding was stronger on the day."

Speaking through an interpreter, Ding thanked a largely pro-Davis York crowd for their support of him.

"This is the second-most important ranking tournament, so it is a great pleasure to win it," said Ding, who won the China Open earlier this year.

"York is a big step for me. I've gained loads of confidence and experience here."

Snooker!
Reading that article, it wasn't apparent what sport that was. :frown:

So, how does being 30 years one's senior make for an advantage in this sport?

Experience!
Okay, I know that's supposed to be a factor. But doesn't this sport come down to knowing the angles and visual angles?

Another win in England for an East Asian in a major ranking tournament!

This occurred on Sunday 21 October 2007.

After James Wattana and Ding Junhai.

An emphatic win of 9 - 6 against the world number one Ronnies O' Sullivan, for a fellow hongkonger Marco Fu.

What a result! Marco was on fire in the last three frames, any HKer seen it in HK or China TV!

Well, don't forget the technique that comes with experience. And aside from the nerves not to make a amateur mistake, there's also the occasional tough trick shot.

Good job for Ding.

Obviously nameless do not know anything about snooker!

Ding's win was over 2 years ago, I am talking about Marco Fu!

Who had been on the circuit for over 9 years!

He had beaten the player who is widely acknowledged to be the best in the world...
I.e. Ronnie O' Sullivan....

He (Marco) had beaten (Ronnie) before, but not in a ranking final!

Ronnie played Ding last year in a controversal final, in which Ronnie won. And Ding appeared to 'throw-in-the-towel', he (Ding) was badly upset and crying, largely because of persistant racist jibes and heckling from the hostile northern white crowd!

Ding's immaturity surfaced largely because he is only 20! And only 19 when he played Ronnie in the world final!

Incidentally snooker is a game similar to pool, but played on a larger table! With a stick called a cue!
