Last night on ER, Jing-Mei Chen encountered a patient, an angry white biker dude, who first demanded that he wanted "an American doctor". Elizabeth (a british doctor), said "she *is* the american doctor." He then proceeded to mock asian people, saying "me love you long time" in a fakey chinese accent, and call her some bad words and racial slurs which i'm not sure whether we're allowed to post here or not.
It's strange....Jing-Mei was, understandably, upset, but none of the other characters seemed surprised. For those who saw it, what did you think of this scene? Do you think it was a good idea to show people that racism agains asians still does exist in this country? or was any potential benefit of including this scene nullified by the fact that none of the other characters even seemed surprised, or seemed to care, beyond trying to placate her?

I didn't see this episode... but I too would like to read about the thoughts of those who did see it.

too bad the only way that one of them tried to placate her was to try and sleep with her. i don't think that plot line was put in there to point out how this issue still exists, but rather to vary the old racism plot by pointing it towards an asian character rather than an african-american character. i just wish that there was some more done with it instead of just showing chen all upset and hiding it. i agree with noriko, the writers should have done more with it.

maybe the patient was an enraged lunatic.
I think the amount of Chen being upset was buidling up...espicially since two episodes ago, she was held at gun point. Even then she didn't talk about it.... her character doesn't like to share her emotions too much.

I saw that episode. I did not think much of it but I was surprised it happened.

not to be anal, but since i feel that enygma had the answer to your question really, wouldn't the faky voice be korean? as this is a reference back to the korean war from a loooooong time ago. it's also been attributed to vietnamese specifically, and of course all asians in general. but i have yet to hear chinese specifically....

it's definitely good to show that racism exists against asians. i have white friends from middle class families that think that racism has been eradicated from american society.

ok, on ER tonight.
an asian patient comes in who is out and the paramedics say that they didn't catch her name. the doctors ask her if she speaks english (she's still comatose) and then carter tells someone to get chen so that she could translate. for some reason, this kind of annoyed me because they were just assuming that she couldn't speak english and that she was also chinese.

what's the big deal about that? I think the fact that it was an Asian family with some indentured servant that pissed me off.
ER is stupid.. Scrubs is more how it's really like in the hospital.

ER is nothing but General Hospital in primetime. How many years did Dr. Greene have that brian tumor that left him two weeks to live before he actually died? I used to watch it, but not anymore.
