God of Gamblers is a GREAT movie that spun off way too many sequels that I had to Wikipedia the dern thing cuz it's been so long and I only remember seeing two of them...
Sequels, spin-offs and parodies
The success of the film spawned many parodies and spin-offs such as All for the Winner starring Stephen Chow. Several more comedy-driven sequels also starring Stephen Chow were released, as well as a sequel where Chow Yun-Fat reprises his role as Ko Chun.
God of Gamblers series:
God of Gamblers (1989)
God of Gamblers II (1991) - This film continues where the original God of Gamblers storyline left off. This time, Andy Lau's character teams up with Stephen Chow's character from All for the Winner. Chow Yun-Fat did not return for this film, but his God of Gambler character did show up for a brief cameo appearance using archive footage.
God of Gamblers III: Back To Shanghai (1991) - The film is the sequel to God of Gamblers II. Only several characters from God of Gamblers II' returned for this sequel.
God of Gamblers Returns (1994) - Also released under the name God of Gamblers 2 (but not God of Gamblers II) this is the 'true' sequel to the original God of Gamblers film, with Chow Yun-Fat back to reprise his role as the God of Gamblers.
God of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage (1996) - A markedly unsuccessful prequel of the original God of Gamblers, starring Leon Lai as Ko Chun.
Spin-offs:
All for the Winner (1990) - Stephen Chow is the Saint of Gamblers in this popular God of Gamblers parody.
The Top Bet (1991) - This is a spin-off of All for the Winner, with only several characters from the original reprising their role. Stephen Chow did, however, make a cameo appearance in this spin-off. The film stars Anita Mui and Carol Cheng.
Saint of Gamblers (1996) - A spin-off of the All for the Winner series, with only Ng Man-Tat reprising his role.
Now that I got THAT cleared up, I now know which ones I've seen...the original GOG, God of Gamblers II, God of Gamblers Returns and the All for the Winner joint from Stephen Chow.
The original is the best, IMO. Everything was just pitch perfect entertaining in that one and I can watch it over and over and still feel that thrill of tension whenever it seems like Ko Chun's about to lose, then uses his "magic." It's also cool to see late 80's HK fashion styles, like Andy Lau with his rolled-sleeve red leather jacket. All for the Winner is also pretty damn funny.
Wasn't there an American remake of this, or was there supposed to be one, but didn't get optioned?

I believe three of em. I didnt finish the one I assume is with CYF where he's obsessed with chocolate and he loses his memory.
My favs were one where this guy likes this girl with the mole on her face and then he puts the card tween his hands and changes it, and during the final scene keeps going "tzai lai" (one more time) and goes all in with his chips.
The other one I saw had a playboy dude who cuts a card up with a razor blade into the shape of an Ace and a bunch of gangsters attack his mansion while he's doing a high dive in his pool.
^^ The one you didn't finish was the original GoG.
Your favs were the one where the guy likes this girl with the mole
on her armpit, not her face, they were the second and third
movies in the series.

the Stephen Chow ones were good for a laugh. but i think Chow Yun Fat realised early on it was going to be spun off into a ridiculous number of sequels and stopped at the first movie.

Actually he didn't stop at the first movie, there is a sequal to the
original GoG in which he was again the main character ... it had a
larger and more famous cast but I don't like it as much as I did the
first one.
i think i saw all of them...i want to rewatch the first one! where can i get it!

Love this series - one of my favourite Chinese film series - the others are the Jet Li ones.
A lot of my mates watched it when we were young...or maybe in our teens and we just remember it as being so 'cool'.

Me too. This is something I watch when I was young. Ha, back then we used to play cards afterwards pretending to have magic gambling powers.
