hi there everyone,
i'll keep this short: i'm noriko (or nori, as most people call me, because people are lazy); I'm a college senior, majoring in religious studies with an emphasis on Asian religions, and as of the end of the school year, will be departing america to teach in Japan.

i consider myself asian, but i look a lot more like the white side of my family...so much so that i do get the occasional "gaijin" comment when i am visiting relatives in japan. Ah well; what can ya do:). After all, even if you are of 100% Japanese ancestry, but are from America, you can still be a baka gaijin if you don't know your honorifics properly;)

this is a great forum-- i'm looking forward to getting to know you all.

Alright, more mixed Japanese. I'm going to be a majority leader pretty soon.

Wow, I think Asian religions are fascinating. In the theologies department, I studied Asian religions (e.g. Buddhism, Daoism, Hinduism, Jainism, Shintoism,etc....) What do you plan to teach in Japan?

teaching in Japan? going on JET, as an independent, or on some other program?

Japanese honorifics ... uugh. gotta learn that stuff to prepare for interviews so I don't piss off some HR director using backwards honorifics, saying zonjite imasu ka when i should be saying gozonji desu ka or something like that. but then I know a lot of kids in Japan who mess up that stuff too, which makes me feel a little less stupid when I do.

Most Japanese looking for jobs have no idea on how to use honorifics. They usually learn on the job. Most people who learn Japanese as foreigners (i.e. learning at college as adults) have more opportunity and motivation to use honorifics.

This is why my family used to tease me about the way I speak.

wow! thanks for the warm welcome, guys:)

to answer everyone's questions: i am applying to the JET program, but if i don't get in , I think i will just go to japan anyway and teach at a conversation school...those jobs are easier to get but don't pay much, so i would stay with relatives until i get a better job. And yeah, i'd be teaching english...but my long-term plan is to teach english for a few years, then go to graduate school in religion and become a professor.

well, i better get back to studying about Daoism, since I have an exam in an hour. hope everyone is having a great day!:)

hmm...well if you study Daoism enough you will at least have interesting fodder for conversations. For example: did you know that some Daoist alchemists during the Han dynasty thought that if they ingested cinnabar (mercuric sulfide), they would become immortal? Apparently they didn't catch on when everyone who'd tried it before them just died;)

and also: i would post on your auto forum, but....well...not only do i not own a car, but i don't even know how to drive, cos i've never lived in a city where it was practical, much less neccessary. I can still post, though....let's see...."yes, cars! They're so...fast! And....metallic!"

or not:)

oh and good luck with the icky grad school tests!

Hola! Good luck with your studies, I studied some religion in college, and I've always found Asian religion and mythology to be really fascinating. I spent some time living in a Monastary in Thailand to get a better understanding of Theravadan Buddhism. I learned so much there, now if only I can apply it to real life....
