Seconds Before My Death

My life, a cauldron filled by deep despair
By others' actions pouring utter pain
The wounds cannot begin to show compare
The hidden truth behind another's gain.
My shadow lies behind his callused hands,
His tongue determines what shall be my worth.
My life is blown away like golden sand,
Eroding my existence from the earth.
Uncharted waters leading me to sigh
This aching soul abandoned on the street
While I am overlooked by power's eyes
For vultures flying over me to feast.

And yet, a friend's voice, so soothing to hear,
before had not consoled these tired ears.

Explanation: This poem is a class assignment. The last two lines are a couplet that signals a volta or a turn in direction of the poem. As you'll notice, the first twelve lines represent a woman's moment before giving up on life, but a friend unexpectedly helps her to change her decision. In addition, this poem is entirely written in iambic pentameter (10 syllables, marked by a pattern of unstressed and stressed syllables). With the exception of the last two lines, the rhyme is in the form of abab, cdcd, efef. The couplet has a "gg" rhyming scheme. :)
