I used to listen to this type of music about ten odd years ago in the days of No Doubt, Smashing Pumpkins, Presidents of the United States of America, Foo Fighters, Rage Against the Machine, Weezer, Bush, Nirvana, Offspring, Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, White Zombie and few others. I even listened to some old school Heavy Metal like Guns n Roses and Metallica. I don't listen to much of the stuff they play today and I usually stick to old school ninties stuff.

Can't say I really have/had a favorite rock/alternative/metal band since my music tastes were (and still are) dominated by Rap,R&B,Dance and Techno. (God I just love Lasgo, Dj Alice, Dj Encore and not to forget Real McCoy and their album "Another Night")

YESSS!! Thanks man, you don't know it but I've been trying to remember the band Daphne Loves Derby forever now! I remember coming across their webpage a while back and liking their music. However later on when I wanted to go back to the page, I forgot their damn name and have been racking my brain trying to remember. I see this post and the name so it all comes back to me now! For some reason when I read their name I think Deathcab for Cutie. Don't know why though! Thanks for indirectly helping me out!

i'm pretty stuck in the 90's with my rock (and my music in general). 311, pearl jam, sublime, nirvana, bush, STP, dave matthews band, oasis, green day, incubus, korn, blink182, foo fighters, RATM, everclear.

then there's the newish ones. linkin park, hot hot heat, kaiser chiefs, the lovemakers, lifehouse. it's a much shorter list.

Queens of the Stone Age. The Donnas. Black Jack Johnson.

M83's album is simply gorgerous, but it may be too techno-glam for most rock heads.

i love the Gorillaz new album (it was on repeat for weeks when i first got it). but i didn't classify it as rock otherwise i would have listed it too...i guess maybe it is if "rock" is defined loosely...?

Oh yeah, and that girl Kelly Clarkson. I guess she's really pop more so than "rock" music - but I'm impressed - her lyrics are not really bubble-gum Britney Spears bullshit - she talks about some real stuff in her songs, i'm impressed actually. I wonder if she wrote her songs?

well i can (and do) listen to music passively still outside of work but i just haven't heard anything lately that got me excited at all. i go to a lot of shows but there's rarely anything i really enjoy.
lately ive been listening a lot to this band called The Organ, theyre from canada i think. i think the band that gets the most play on my list right now is Exodus (only the first two albums). plan to purchase an mp3 player soon.

Yeah, I think people make the mistake of grouping her with all the other pop girl acts and dismissing her, but really though her songs are pretty good. I didn't expect any of those American Idol stars to do well outside of the competition but I think she's definitely holding her own.

Yeah, I'm going to pick up their LP from Best Buy soon! They just came by the Bay Area a few weeks ago. Too bad I found out 2 weeks after the fact! :frown:

And nary an all asian rock band amongst the choices. I guess they really do need some mainstream ones over here.

Have you ever heard of this band Bento? They're from the Bay Area and I think they're good. I don't know what your tastes in music are but you may want to check them out. In fact, there's a ton of Asian American bands/musicians out there. I've been wanting to create a thread dedicated to that for a long time now but YW doesn't allow you to edit posts here after a certain time so I've put it off because of that. Check out Point of No Return, Anti-Gravity, This Time of Year, Know It's Not Too Late, Is This As Good As It Gets, Beautiful Girl, Last Chance for starters. They have an EP coming out, too.

They're having their 1 year anniversary party this November 19 in San Francisco. iaTV will be out there filming their performance. If you're in the Bay Area, please please try to attend this show to show your support! If anything, you may have a chance to be on TV!

The Mars Volta is cool, but I've only heard their first joint, not their latest. If you like them, you might like Spoon as well.

When everyone's ready to drink a higher grade of whiskey with me at the end of a hard day's work, we'll see if you can hang with The Giraffes. Don't laff at the name, they're very hard, not like their vegetarian animal namesake.

You know, I stopped listening to rock/alternative a couple of years back (except for a couple of bands/artists which I already mentioned) because i got tired of it, it got old the same way rap does, except at least you can dance to rap (if nothing else). So my radio hasn't been tuned it to an alternative radio station in a minute (unlike around 2001 or 2002 when I couldn't get enough of it - it was all new to me).

Anyway..................is there anybody out now, like relatively mainstream cause I don't feel like hunting/searching for underground music, that's actually good? Did any older, more renowned artists put out anything good? From time to time, I switch back to my old favorite WRAX 100.5, but all I hear is.....................crap, basically. Who's worth checking out now????

Yeah, I hear you on that. I'm a straight hip-hop head, as I have been for years, but the occasiaonal rock track will break out and make me stand at attention once in a while. I already mentioned White Stripes to you before, and listen to a couple of cuts by Coheed and Cambria, they ain't too bad, and they actually don't whine, which is a plus in today's musak.

I play drums, so I do tend to like rock music. Don't like hip hop much, maybe Eminem.

Sum 41, Hedley and Simple Plan are decent, Sum being the clear best of the 3. (They're all Canadian too... what a coincidence eh?)

I only like 2 or 3 of Nickelback's songs, they're all the same.

I also like Green Day, Gob, Some Swtichfoot, the Offspring, Metallica, Ozzy, Stained, Sugarcult and a few more I can't remember.

Favourite songs: Fat Lip, (Sum 41) original prankster (offspring) Enter the Sandman (Metallica) Welcome to the Jungle, memory (sugarcult) american idiot (green day) and many more I won't list here.

I also play the Konami series of Drummania games so I got a LOT of new favourites as well. These are all Japanese: (if you are Japanese you can confirm if I got the bands correct)

Monster Tree by Shakkalabbits
Koukou No Hana by Shachi
Shirobodou by Shachi
Gypsy by Shachi
Breakout by Shachi (I really do like Shachi, they're an indie punk band from Japan)
Hong Kong Super Express Z (Jap guy singing Cantonese.... hilarious)
Taisetsu na Mono by Road of Major
Sailing Day by Bump of Chicken (weird english names I know)
Chikara by BeforU ( an all-girl band)
Breakdown by BeforU
Nocturne No 9 by Tomoyasu hotei
another song by hotei but I don't know the title
Honjitsu seiten wa nari by Do as Infinity (not sure if i got the song title right)
Dragonblade by Kozo Nakamura

I don't really like Cantopop or hip hop.

Yeah, I mean really what I like is 80s shit. That's my favorite. U2, Phil Collins, The Police, Toto, etc. When Vice City first came out I never could turn the game off, if for no other reason than the fact that all the songs on the game were from the 80s (black music & white music).

Never heard of Coheed and Cambria, is there anybody you can compare them to?
