there have been many, many aspects delivered of the asian-american identity through magazines, film, zine culture etc.
and now.......
questions galore ^_^
i feel that they are a jab at every degree of what 'media' means, and thereby we can't seperate them into two wholly right and wrong.
in mainstream media as well as independent media, discussions of bigger impact versus truthful depiction can't be ignored. but are the connotations we equate them with entirely correct? in what ways is mainstream media restrictive compared to independent media and vice-versa?
how do you feel of the strengthening of the asian-american voice through independent media opposed to mainstream media?

imo,
i can't feel that what i see as a widely-accepted medium is a representation of the individual being. i think the more we choose to believe that what we 'see' is really what it is, the more the truth becomes tainted. and yet, what is the truth? in black and white terms, two sides of the coin.

i'll conclude with a quote by this wonderful lady^^
a simple idea was brought up in class. the concept of two deaths. one first dies a physical death. the second is when the first-hand memory of you dies... as in everyone you know has also died. start applying this concept to historical narrative and the idea of collective memory and myth. the reason vietnam isn't discussed in any sort of depth in highschool textbooks is because agent orange lawsuits are still in the news and everyone has that crazy pott smoking veteren for a neighbor. it's not reached its second death.
