Geez, I just saw the push done by the NYC to hold the Olympics here in New York. What a cheesy commercial.
For those that don't know the two cities that are competing to hold the 2012 Olympics in the US are New York City and San Francisco. Either NYC or San Francisco will then represent the US city in the bid versus other international cities to hold the 2012 Olympics.
That being said and I know it's awhile away, not sure on how the other YW New York members feel. I hope to god you people in San Francisco get it. It's gonna be a traffic nightmare for me if it comes to New York City. Gah, like we need more people. I know it's good for the NYC economy and good for the morale after the events of last year, but it's just gonna be a commuter nightmare for the residents.
So go San Fran go, go, go! :D

Yeah, on the one hand it would be nice to have the Olympics in NY (like in Flushing *AHEM*), so us NYers could easily go to the games if we can afford the tix. But I sorta feel San Francisco may be better if it's less crowded there.

Well yeah Llama, I imagine Flushing Meadow park is in the plan to hold events, you can't hold everything in the city.
Oh my god, the tight security, the mass crowds during peak times etc etc, and let's not forget the tourists  .

BunBoy, do you plan on being in NYC in 2012 ? I thought it was kinda expensive. I wouldn't want to be paying those rents and taxes for the next 10 years, wouldn't want to try to buy a house or condo in that area either.

Yes, I still plan to live in NYC that's my first choice to practice after my residency and specialization. All my friends and family is here. It's roughly the same or a little more as San Fran, I hear, cost of living wise.
My friend who just finished his residency and is practicing got a nice 2 BR co-op over on 32nd and 2nd, a hop skip and a jump away from NYU Hospital where he works, for a good price (good price NYC standards anyways).

It will be traffic hell over here in SF if we win the bid. The commute was really horrible when the dot.coms were alive. It's less horrible now but still bad.

Where are they going to hold events? I'm enough of a relic to remember going to the Lake Placid Olympics, but that was upstate.

They're gonna hold events basically in Queens, NYC, Staten Island, New Jersey (Giants Stadium and Continental Airlines Arena) and everywhere else there is room.
Olympic Village is gonna be in Queens west across the East River facing the United Nations.
Olympic Stadium (opening and closing ceremonies, track and field events) will be located Long Island Railroad open Hudson Yards.
If you're interested about the proposed plan by Pataki:

Edit: Going home to visit my folks or hanging out with friends in Queens might be a pain if this goes through.

to think that i'm going to be all of 27 years old the next time the olympics is in the states. i went to the torch ceremony thing in SF when they passed through on the way to salt lake. they were pretty enthusiastic about having it here. heh. to think that i'll be 27, and maybe even married.

i know its really selfish and short sighted for me to think this, but DAMN it'd be nice to have the Olympics practically next door or just a short drive away from home. would DEFINITELy procure tickets for THAT olympics.
and to think it's POSSIBLE for the Olympics to be right after my homeland olympics in beijing! that would be HOT...first the homeLAND then the homeTOWN representing.
then again it's too early to say. i mean how likely would it be a us city win anymore? they should hold it in Baghdad...since there will be plenty of clear space after dubya has his fun.
(sorry for the insensitive war joke, ppl)

USOC Chooses New York in Close Vote for '12 Games Bid
N.Y. Bests San Francisco 132-91
By STEVE WILSTEIN
.c The Associated Press
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 2) - New York City turned on its star power, flexed its financial muscle and touted its status as the ``world's second home'' to beat out San Francisco on Saturday and become the U.S. candidate for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The New York organizers broke into cheers, tears and shouts as the close vote was announced and Frank Sinatra's ``New York, New York'' filled the room.
On a weighted scale of voting by the 123 members of the U.S. Olympic Committee board of directors, New York received 132 out of 223 points.
Assuring the USOC that they have the resources and security to run the world's biggest show, New York organizers laid out an ambitious $5 billion plan that would place virtually all events within city limits.
``We won't bring the Olympics back to the United States on the cheap,'' Mayor Michael Bloomberg said, contrasting the city's plan with a much lower cost bid by San Francisco.
Olympic long jump legend Bob Beamon opened the New York presentation by calling his native city ``the place that has welcomed more people with the dream than anywhere else.''
