View Full Version : Stereotype that asian girls are materialistic

Okay, on the guys board we girls seem to be thought of as materialistic and high maintenance. I must admit I have seen this in the filipino community and I've seen heaps of asian girls carry designer purses (real or fake I don't know) but why are we thought to be only attracted to a man with money? (among other things of course lol). For the record I have only one prada bag which I saved up for and bought myself and am a self confessed t-shirt and jeans girl. Although I do buy books the way some girls buy shoes. What is your take on this?

i think that high maintenance comment was more a reaction to the what may be interpretted as unfriendly threads to asian men.
anyway, doesn't anyone want to dissect the term "high maintenance." i mean you don't "maintain" ppl, you maintain things. so does it reflect the objectification of asian women in our society? oh boy the guys are gonna flame me....
also, i dont know that many women, but i dunno if asian women are particularly materialistic. i tend not to think so, and if a woman is materialistic, it's partly the man's fault for not clamping down and refusing to feed that kind of habit.

Given, yes, some girls are more materialistic than others. But I don't think it's an *Asian thing* at all. I'm not as materialistic as a lot of people I know, and that's white, black, and Asian included. Oh, who am I kidding, I'm a spoiled brat.

I definitely think that everyone (boy/gurl/ man/ woman....) can be ***extremely materialistic*** ...Especially if you're living in the U.S with our culture of consumer-ism...(i don't know what word I'm looking for....!!)
For me, I know I'm materialistic...and yeah, I'm an asian Girl... but I think I've grown to be this way because I've grown up here.... not kuz I'm asian... and not kuz I'm a girl....

I live in Westchester, a weathly NY suburb. Everyone is materialistic (Asian, white, black, all of em)! Try being stuck in traffic with a BMW on one side, a Lexus convertible in front of you a Dodge Viper in your rear-view mirror and a brand new Audi TT on your left. All being driven by 'beautiful people'.
It's a good thing I'm so damn handsome, otherwise I'd have a complex!

My car better be German, Swedish or Italian. My chocolate better be Belgian. My diamonds better be VS or VVS and come in a little blue box. I don't care about the brand name of my clothing.
But I'm only like this because my husband spoiled me. I used to be very low maintenance. AND I'm more Caucasian than Asian percentage wise, so there goes the Asian girl theory.
deez nuts
10-31-2002, 05:36 PM
FYI. It's not a theory, just from my experience and only mine. If others share it too, so be it.
My woman is high maintenance both financially and emotionally. How else would you explain going out/or and going to work wearing around $3000-$4000 worth of clothing and accessories on her? Why else would she page me three or four times a day when I'm in the hospital just to talk. And puts up an attitude when I say I can't talk and have to go. Let's not even go to her $30,000+ worth of designer handbags alone. But hey you know what? I don't mind, cause I can put up with it and she is what she is, high maintenance.
Make it sound like high maintenance like it's solely a bad thing, it's not. Hell if I had a daughter, I teach her to be high maintenance too, to weed out the men from the boys.
And like I said, I encountered and dated more Asian women like this than any other women. And you know what? Deep down, I like it, cuz it keeps me from getting bored with the relationship.
So when I say Asian women are high maintenance there is no positive or negative connotation. Just a trend that I have noticed in my own personal dating life. Nothing good and nothing bad.

I've found asian girls to be very LOW maintinance. But then most I've known are the studious type which would explain it.

I dunno, there's not much wrong w. high maintenance, I guess, but (hypocritical moral soapbox comments coming up) it's sick if someone wants OTHER people to maintain them. Where's their sense of dignity? Are they poodles waiting for their gourmet canine caviar to be served to them? All I gotta say is, if someone wants to live an expensive lifestyle, he OR SHE should pay his OR HER own way. Expecting a man to buy her everything is just disrespectful, IMO, treating a man more like a money bag than like an equal human being. And then they go and talk about abstract feminist theories and how women have been oppressed in a patriarchal society. WELL, STOP MAKING EXCUSES! How is a woman going to break out of the patriarchal mode if she just expects miracles to happen? She should start with herself and break herself out of dependency on men for material things. After that, well, whatever floats her boat, at least she has a legitimate position when she demands equality cuz she's living independent. What bugs me even more is a lot of "high maintenance" people are probably college liberals who once a year rally against consumerism. geeeeeeeezuz, i mean if you feel so bad about buying a few extra pairs of shoes, why don't you REALLY cut down on consumption by not driving or by not using A/C? SHEESH
Ok, rant over. Dunno if it was relevant. :)

Actually it wasn't you. Just wanted to clarify my stance on high maintenance. Everyone was equating it to being a bad thing. Which isn't really how I view it.

The numerous kicks (sneakers and dress shoes). Fucking Nikes are addicting
4 prescription glasses laying around (Armani, Matsuda etc etc) Milked the hospital eyeglass plan to the max.
But compare what I have to my girl's, I look like like the salvation army. She's like the epitome of a label whore. Koreans and their Burberry's and Louis Vuitton, hahaha j/k, j/k. I just think she takes it to extremes sometimes given our current financial status. Maybe in five years, sure, but right now when she's saving to go get her MBA? But bottomline, it's her cheddah, she's free to do what she wants with it. Shopping and buying her b-day present and other shit is a bitch though.
And when it comes to high maintenance. Gimme financially high maintenance over emotionally high maintenance anyday. I ain't got time for looking out for baby momma's drama.
I can't comment on this for people who live in the US but down under here, I can say Asian girls (esp chinese background Asians) are way to more materialistic than any other races' girls. Do a simple test, ask an Asian to name as many brands as she can and ask a white girl to do the same and see who does it better ... And I hate to say this, but it's so true and that is, put all the brands on most Asian girls, they still look don't as hot as white chicks with no frills clothings... the thing is the fact that you wear designer label doesn't mean you would look like the models that you see on the mags.... But having said all these, I must say, most white girls glory days are gone by the time they reach early 20s whereas Asian girls still rule even at 30s

Yeah that's so true. Most white womens physical appearance disintegrates by the time they reach their 30's (ie., they age really quickly) whilst Asian women in general really look young and refreshing at the same age. That's the glory of Asian women in general -- barring, of course, their highly materialistic ways (j/k)
Nah, to be serious I have'nt met many Asian women who are really materialistic. From what I see it's always the white women who are more materialistic by far.

i'd also have to say that asian girls on the average are more materialistic and high maintenance, and this is especially true of girls in asia. but it's all cool, they just expect more out of a guy. i mean i'm not going to expect an individual girl to be high maintenance when i meet her, just because she's asian. but my observation has been that on the average, asian girls are more high maintenance.

burberry is not so bad, they have the Blue label line which is the affordable line for east asian countries, dunno if its availible in Korean. I totally disagree, comparing the beauty of asian girls vs white girls, thats all a matter of opinion.
brands dont make a person look better, you gotta have style.
I see mad girls with LV bags, some know how to rock em and some dont.
You have to be the total package, all subtle little details have to fall into place.
you could have the most expensive clothes, but if you're just plain out of shape, or the clothes dont suit your body type, plain ugly, etc, it wont look good.

here in l.a., i think both asian and white girls are materialistic. up in the bay area, however, it seems that more asians than whites are. could be a cultural thing--your circle of friends, keeping up, etc.
also, it could have a lot to do with your upbringing. my mom would only buy me name brands while i was growing up. when i started earning money in high school, i would go to second-hand stores like the buffalo exchange to shop because the jeans were already worn in and were so cheap! every time my mom would discover them, however, she would throw them away, and i would get in trouble. i would also get in trouble or chastised for not wearing the or using the jewelry or purses she buys me. that or her feelings would be hurt...she likes to be stylish and she likes for me to be able to be as well. *shrugs* it's cool with me--it's not like i really buy any of the expensive stuff on my own. i just use and sport 'em cause i get em for free. plus, they're from my mom so they have sentimental value.
and, on a side note, now that i'm working in public interest, i've been trying to hide a lot of my expensive stuff. l.v. and dooney briefcases are now sitting in my closet because of the somewhat dirty looks i get from people. gucci watches--left up in the bay area. i personally am annoyed that people are so judgmental about whether a person is materialistic. because of these dirty looks, i'm forced to spend money on less flashy briefcases rather than use the nice ones that i got for free. i haven't ever expressed this before because i don't know how it would sound--but i *like* my stuff. i'm not materialistic for sure, but if i get nice things, i want to be able to wear and use them. ...sometimes it's like i almost have to pretend to be poor in order to blend in with people--so i wouldn't come off as a spoiled brat--so that people would accept me. that is very annoying.

but are your parents AlSO raised in America? So maybe materialism isn't an Asian cultural thing. certainly, my parents aren't materialistic. in fact, when i was little, i regularly got mocked in school cuz my mom would buy me REALLY ghetto off the street clothing, and i'd wear it to school.

in this era, i don't believe anyone isn't materialistic. boys, girls, white, black, asian. sheesh, stop denyin that you are not materialistic. it's juss that we're materialistic in different forms. guys, how many computers do you have? lets not forget the other gadgets like cars, PDAs? i grew up in the south where there is still sentiments of southerners -they think they're a special race of people. my friends owned horses and fancy cars -boys. and they were white. i think the reason why u guys say that Asian girls are materialistic is coz u date mostly Asian girls? my dad spoils me rotten. and that's normal. for an asian family in the US, there has to be a certain standard of wealth to be able to get there. i think so many other girls are spoilt by their dads. not only asians.
branded stuff doesnt make u look classy. instead, i think its kinda cheesy. the real classy people will use designer stuff which can only be identified by other classy people. i hate those that carries a handbag which is written LV LV all over. sheesh. designer stuff are bought for the style, quality and class. other than that, it's stupid to show off.

Hahah yeah I got some of that shit too.
I ain't got time for looking out for baby momma's drama.
fucking nike and their special limited edition shoes! Have you seen the lines around supreme? they just dropped their exclusive line and people line up everyday this week at 9am for em.
I just picked up some Paul Smith frames. I never really got into matsudas, I'm all about plastic frames.
burberry is not so bad, they have the Blue label line which is the affordable line for east asian countries, dunno if its availible in Korean. LV is way overpriced, but I see the quality and the craftsmenship put into it. You could always get her korean and japanese bootlegs which I hear are so well made they actually make he real ones look like fakes.
Haha yeah fooking Nike kicks.
Nah man she buys the Burberry. And try passing off an imitation LV to her like I did one time, haha aka it's not gonna happen. But like I said, it's her money not mine. My only beef is she won't wear anything that's not a designer label.
And for real 1200 bucks for a bag and even more for fuck me boots? I mean come on, she looks hot when she sports em, with long legs and attitude, I can't front. But don't complain about how expensive B school is, when you dropping all that cheddah for clothes and accessories.
But hey if you want the tude you gotta pay the price. If you want the girl with the tude, you better hold it down.
Fuck me boots..
I gotta add that to my list of "things my ideal girl must have"

Bottomline for me, if you're hot and off the hook, I can deal with you being a high maintenance (financially and emotionally) girlfriend. But if you're broke ass busted and you're high maintenance I'm dropping you, if it gets to be too much for me.
Call it insensitive. Call it un-p.c. Call me an insensitive and shallow jerk. I call it being a man and a cost vs benefit scenerio. And deep down alot of guys feel this way. I'm just calling it the way it is for me.

I spent more on guitars and amplifiers than on clothing or shoes.
Too many asian guys make the mistake of buying stuff for these moneygrubbin' goldiggin' attention whores, and they probably end up not getting any poon.

I think it's a kind of general stereotype that all women, regardless of race, are materialistic, and in all cases, it's not true.

alot of the no frills clothing you see could luxury labels, you just dont know.
Use common sense, you can see the material of no frills is different than the luxury labels, wash a few times (some of them don't need to be washed at all), you can tell it's a no frill or a luxury label

I think ALL people, regardless of sex, regardless of age are materialistic. But some people just aren't AS materialistic as others. Some people are just not materialistic enough to be put into the "MATERIALISTIC" category.

I don't know, but I am under the impression that girls are materialistic. All girls.
One girl asked me for dating advice once when 2 dudes liked her. I asked her to list the strong points of both.
Guy 1: Cute and nice and felt comfortable around him.
Guy 2. Drove a Benz...
That's pretty much it.

buy a 600 dollar helmut lang jacket and see how cheap luxury labels can be.

Everyone has their own "style" but I guess whoever spends that much money on a jacket would just be stupid if similar style of jacket could be bought at a much cheaper price. Obviously, he/she is just into brand more than anything else, but then again, may be he/she is just rich, I don't know..... Well, for poor guys like me, I can always do some research on fashion magazines. FHM always does a good job on that.....
