Superbaru coming soon: Steady trickle of WRX STi cars to begin in summer 2003

As we’ve reported in past issues, the privilege of getting even more fun versions of hot little cars like the WRX Impreza enjoyed by right-hand-drive regions is about to be shared with North America. In summer 2003 we’ll get a steady trickle of WRX STi cars from Japan starting at around $35,000 apiece. In a good year, Subaru hopes to sell about 4000 to us. Judging from our quick drive experience in southwest Germany after the WRC German Rally, the waiting list even at such a price will be long.

Production STi and Subaru SCCA rally photos

The boost from the straight-inlet IHI turbocharger (vs. 90-degree Mitsubishi unit on WRX) is made greater on the STi (Subaru Tecnica International) by mounting a larger intercooler to force greater amounts of dense, cooler air into the turbo. At about 3500 rpm, the effect is like an S2000 at 6000 rpm. You’re suddenly in the “STi Zone” and the dual Suretrac limited-slip differentials are pulling all four wheels as hard as they can. The result is that you can push the WRX STi even more than you enjoy doing with a WRX. The sensation borders on invincibility.

Major interior differences are a special leather MOMO steering wheel and suede- effect Prodrive-designed racing seats in front. The gold 17-inch alloy wheels are inspired by Prodrive-engineered rally cars and the four-pot Brembo stoppers look nice through the spokes. Horsepower from the low-lying flat four in this version hits a reported 261 in all non-Japanese-spec cars. (In Japan, horsepower is between 270 and 280 thanks in part to 100-plus-octane fuel.) Torque is 253 lb-ft at 4000 rpm.

As displayed at the Paris show in early October, next year’s WRX STi wears a fresh face with new, more aggressive-looking headlights replacing the friendly round ones that have featured on WRX since its launch two years ago. This more sinister look resembles the previous-generation car, while underneath there’s some beefing up of the suspension mounts and parts to sharpen steering and handling response.

Eh. What kinda bone-head Autoweek writer is making this stuff up? The intercooler is after the turbo. Routing the air into an intercooler before the turbo would be useless. The air that comes from the turbo is heated by the turbo so it needs to be cooled down before going into the engine.

air route: intake :go: turbo :go: intercooler :go: engine

Of course I left out some things but that's more accurate than what this Autoweek writer is trying to say.

Jensen whaddup.

Sy whaddup.

You all still bo0sting? wo0t. I'm sick of this 91 octane bullshit. I'm running 1.1 bar. And that's with 500cc injectors. What's the most you guys are running on 91 petrol?

Well, MTBE will be gone soon in CA (it's already gone here in SF @76 stations all over). More ethanol... I wonder what that will mean for prices, etc. 91 octane will still be crap. I creeped to about 1.25bar on the dyno with a 20G and 540cc SupraTT injectors. I ran with and without water injection. No detonation in both cases.

Garrett GT25R will be installed soon! :D

Good to hear, good to hear.

Jensen- Creeped to 1.25 bar....what was your b00st set at? Which wastegate is on there now? Spring tension?
Noooooo stay with MHI turdb0s, dun g0 Garrett! lol

Sy- double b00stin? f@g. I'm still single b00stin. Haven't done anythin to r00tb33r in years. I swear 91 octane put a damper on my inspiration. Maybe I just need to go out and buy another turdb0.

Now where the hell is the new Evo...

Boost was set to .9bar because I knew it would creep... just not that much. Wastegate is the internal GReddy MHI unit which is complete crap. The wastegate actuator aggravates the problem.

Garrett GT series is rated for OEM use. The one that I will be putting on the car is watercooled and has a dual ball bearing center section. MHI is old and crappy compared to the GT series. :D

Wow, I'm surprised you're not running an external wastegate. Tial makes a good one. With one of these babies you can get consistent b00zt. Although a little creep is good (you're not making power unless you're creeping ), consistent b00st is SEXY. In addition you can vent to atmosphere. SEXY.

I would have gone external and saved myself all the trouble if there was no downtime to speak of. I don't want to vent wastegate gasses to the atmosphere. It is incredibly loud... and since I'm getting a SMALLER turbo... it will be on boost more. Heh. Anyway, that MHI turbo is gonna get tossed soon. I just need to get the rest of my damn parts.

At long last the sTi. I drove my friend's in Japan in 1998. It kicked so much ass. Maybe I'll have enough pennies in my piggy bank to buy me my own in a few years.
