I applied to 3 colleges. =) University of Michigan, Washington University, and Saint Louis University. Saint Louis U isn't as prominent as the first two, but I'm glad I made my choice.

i applied to UC berkely, UC irvine (dunno why), UC san diego, UC davis, and UC santa cruz (another big wtf on this one too)
i got into all but san diego.....let me put it this way, i wouldn't care so much if i didn't live there at the time.
cal tried to give me a lil shit, and said there was a discrepeancy, i faxed them a copy of the paper and then the bunghole who noticed the discrepancy tells me, "damn, i guess i can't fuckin read, sorry."
uc berkely now goes under my "most unprofessional school" list.

On a side note, if your parents are footing the bill, why not apply to all 20 (or more).

shit, 10. thats a lot. i only applied to 2 for undergrad. i just sat down, and looked at the cash flow. the best college for the buck. that eliminated any private schools. so picked 2 state schools. got into both and from that i chose the more reputable academic school. both were in the top 15 though. usually out of state tuition is still cheaper than private tuition.

Way back when I applied to college, I applied to 7 schools, 2 of which I only applied to because they actively recruited me.
Harvard, Penn, Hopkins, and Virginia were my top 4 choices. I applied to VCU as a super-safety. Claremont-McKenna promised me that they would fly me out to LA for an interview for some scholarship. Hampden-Sydney promised to bring me in for a weekend of dining and partying to interview for a scholarship.
In the end, I didn't get into Harvard, so I chose Virginia over Penn and Hopkins. As a Virginia resident, I just couldn't justify the 20K tuition at the other schools when I could go to (at the time) an equivalently reputable school for 4K.
On the other hand, I applied to 22 law schools.

8 undergrad schools for me and 8 med schools here.
So amie prolly has me beat in both combined, possibly even beat me if I added the programs I selected for match day :D
Edit: I posted my strategy when I was applying to undergrad schools, while back when you asked :D

coming from a super elitist public hs (anyone who tells you stuy is better than hunter was a study student REJECTED from hunter, and anyone who says stuy and bronx sci are better than hunter are just raving lunatics), I had to apply to all fairly prestigious schools cuz i'm a cocky bastard:
*well, WAS*
Anyway, we were only allowed to apply to 5 private schools and unlimited public. my dad's suggestion was to go all reaches and 1 safety (the idea is, you may as well aim high cuz you can always go to your backup), but i kinda chickened fr that and went what my counselor would describe as 4 reaches, 1 middle, 1 that was supposed to be safety but i kinda applied late in the rolling process, so she would probably characterize it as middle.
So in the end, I got rejected from my 2 superreaches (harvard and princeton), got accepted into my other 4: Columbia, Penn, Chicago, and Michigan. For some idiotic reason (cuz they accepted me into some undergrad research program that had a fancy title University Scholars), I went to Penn over Columbia.
The Columbia acceptance was the happiest one in my LIFE. i was downstairs getting the mail when i saw the mail man at the front door to the building. So i opened the door for him, and he was like "btw are you bla bla of bla bla Apt #?" So I said yes, and he gave me this BIG blue air mail envelope, and it was from Columbia.
good thing it wasnt a big rejection envelopes w/ all the materials, and a letter containing "This is what you COULD have had if you weren't a SUCKA."

all i gotta say is, my class's mascot was the Codfather.
No one wants to mess w/ the Big Fish.
True you got the not in country thing going. 's all good. I'm not saying YOU're bad; i'm just saying Stuy is one cocky school as a whole BUT everyone else acknowledges them. we still own stuy in feeding top schools even though we're underfunded. Yet, we're not even universally renowned IN NYC, and outside NYC, everyone thinks we're some dipshit private school (no, we're PUBLIC).
Stuy has its own swimming pool, multivariate calc teacher, AND A FUCKING ESCALATOR AND BRIDGE! DAMN!
OK with that, I'm gonna stop talking before The Big Bao finds me and breaks my neck. :)
and i REALLY gotta stop living in the last century...

Haha codfather.
I was just teasing ya Llama. Yeah the peeps at Stuy were pretty stuckup and cocky, for kids in public high school, hahaha. Just bringing back old memories for me. I always viewed it as friendly rivalry. But man, there were alot of assholes in that high school.
It's all good I got what i wanted from Stuy to be where I wanna be. Ok maybe not in the arms of Angelina Jolie, but still.
I'm still gonna knock on Penn though, cuz I took alot of shit from my boy who went there, gonna use you to vent 4 years worth of ribbing. :P

is all good. Penn is THE GHetto Ivy...I mean not only is it really In a ghetto...but people regularly call us penn state. PENN STATE IS NOT IN PHILADELPHIA. ARGHHHHHHHHH! The only school we can knock on is Dartmouth...but not really cuz they're prettier. :)
BTW the only sporting event i went to in hs was a Stuy vs Hunter basketball game. Stuy eliminated Hunter from the playoffs in that game. :(
in any case, Hunter is 10 x as arrogant as Stuy is. probably cuz there are too many private schools in our vicinity. ;) I mean one of my friends at Hunter BURNED his Yale rejection letter. I mean come on...he was pissed he got rejected from YALE? And we regularly made fun of people who were gonna go to state schools.

heheh when i was in 5th grade, i was getting like 20's, 40's, etc on math tests. so i just hid them all in one of my drawers and aggressively guarded it, not even letting my mom open it to clean it out. :)
i think it worked for the most part, cuz my dad said many years later "my son used to hide his grades from me...i once saw some test w/ 40's on it" and i was like "well dad thats actually one of the HIGHER marks."
of course i guess the most safe thing woulda been to just chuck them in the garbage on my way home fr school, but i guess i was a dumb kid who couldn't think of clever ways to avoid showing my parents stuff.
strangely enough, my TEACHER always gave me Bish even A- level in math on the report card. i think i was a teacher's pet of sorts.
