I think Mr. Spencer needs to recant his statement, since we've got lots of chances, these days, if you believe the press.
Spencer blasted for 'Chinaman' comment (http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050818/NEWS10/508180413/1026/NEWS10)

Former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer said today that Jeanine Pirro does not have a "Chinaman's chance" of getting the Conservative Party's nomination for U.S. Senate, sparking criticism from Asian-American groups that consider the term offensive.
"That level of racial insensitivity says something about our elected officials," said Glenn Magpantay, staff attorney for the New York City-based Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund.
Spencer, who is competing with Pirro for both the Conservative and Republican nominations for U.S. Senate, made the comment during a wide-ranging interview on New Rochelle-based radio station, WVOX. It came in response to a question posed by Phil Reisman, a columnist for The Journal News and host of a weekly show on the radio station, about Pirro's support among Conservatives.
"I don't think there's a Chinaman's chance that she could get the Conservative line," said Spencer, who also criticized Pirro for favoring abortion rights and supporting gun control and hate crimes legislation.
Spencer and Pirro, as well as two other Republicans, want to unseat Democratic incumbent Hillary Rodham Clinton.
When a caller to the program later questioned Spencer about his use of the phrase, the former mayor insisted it was not derogatory and referred to the experience of Chinese immigrants in building the nation's railroads.
"It's an often-used cliche by talking heads all over the media," Spencer afterword in a telephone interview with The Journal News. "It is not derogatory at all and anyone who says it is is being a little bit political, I guess."
Advocacy groups disagreed, saying the term dates back to the late 19th century and has come to symbolize the racism and oppression faced by Chinese immigrants.
"'Chinaman's chance' refers to a sad period in American history when Chinese immigrants had little chance of survival in helping to build the nation's railroads on the West Coast," said Pradnya Joshi, president of the New York Chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association., who was attending the group's national convention in Minneapolis today.

Years ago someone had to explain the term "Chinamans chance" to me because I was not familiar with it. They explained what it mean't but not why it mean't what it mean't.
They added that it was a term more popular on the west coast during her time (she was 60).
During our discussion the person also explained what "occidental" mean't;it was a term she used while explaining the term "Chinamans chance".
What I understood from our discussion is the term "Chinamans Chance" is a racial term that means "little chance".
So when a person says: "you DON'T HAVE a Chinamans chance", they are really saying you don't have a chance at all.

What really trips me out is that the phrase is crystal-clearly in the negative even if one's never heard it before...and yet the fucker still tries to make it sound like Asian people SHOULDN'T be offended? Trying to spin it like it's not a big deal? This is how you can tell how a person really views others different from them deep down inside, even if they themselves aren't aware or choose not to smell the coffee. Someone needs to pull this sucka's card, like quick.

the term 'chinaman' is used in a television campaign for cricket over here..its so wierd...when i heard it i was quite taken aback but like has been said, (white) people in general really just dont understand how offensive and hurtful these racial epithets are to the people they are directed at and similar communities...
like the phrase 'indian giver'..thats been used in popular soap operas over here for decades but no one bats an eyelid
WTF?! Why can't this stupid motherfucker just say "snowball's chance in hell?" And even if you accept his interpretation that the phrase has a commonly understood, non-derogatory meaning, he can't escape the fact that "Chinaman" is nevertheless a racial slur. Retard.

This history says that Chinaman's Chance has a derogatory meaning:
From answers.com (http://www.answers.com/chinaman%27s+chance&r=67)
Also, ghost of a chance. An extremely slim chance, a hopeless undertaking. Both versions are most often put negatively, as in He hasn't a Chinaman's chance of finishing the work in time, or They haven't a ghost of a chance to get as far as the playoffs. The first term, now considered offensive, dates from the late 1800s when many Chinese immigrants came to work in California and were resented because they worked for lower wages. Its precise allusion is unclear. The variant, which relies on the meaning of ghost as an insubstantial shadow, dates from the mid-1800s.
The fact that this is the first phrase that blurts out of his mind speaks of his mentality. Other "chance" phrases that could have been used:
Ghost of a chance.
Less of a chance.
Enough of a chance.
Lack of a chance.
And if you're in a Martino "frame of mind" (http://forums.yellowworld.org/showthread.php?t=25353), would you have more of a chance if you "didn't have a chinaman's chance"?

We were born into a racial system that was up and running when we got here. The words we are taught, support the system.
Whether White people understand how "offensive" and "hurtful" racial epithets are is debatable, what is clear is the effect they have at maintaining the racial power dynamic.
The word "MINORity" is a perfect example. I just read a headline that said: "Texas set to become the 4th majority MINORity state".
MINOR people = children = non white people.
You won't see the headline: "Whites set to become MINORities in Texas".
The only time I know of when White people refered to other White people as MINORity is during the early 80s when they got annoyed at the White people in South Africa for practicing unsophisticated racism.

Introducing, from "down under", the guy who attempted to suicide after resigning for making a fucking stupid ass comment about someone else's Malaysian born wife -- John Brogden!
Ship her back for all I care', says Brogden (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/story.cfm?c_id=2&ObjectID=10343252)
31.08.05
SYDNEY - Disgraced NSW Liberal John Brogden said former Labour Premier Bob Carr could "ship his mail-order bride back to where she came from, for all I care", Australian newspapers have reported.
The context of Brogden's racial slur against Malaysian-born Helena Carr was revealed by News Ltd, which also claimed he harassed three women at the function where he made the comments, rather than two.
The state Opposition leader resigned and apologised for the slur and for behaving inappropriately towards two female journalists.
The comments were made, he said, after he had drunk six beers at a Hotels Association function in Sydney on July 29.
News Ltd papers also said Brogden had sexually harassed three women at the function, including the Sunday Telegraph's Justine Ferrari and the Sun-Herald's Angela Cuming.
In an article in the Sun-Herald, Cuming said Brogden didn't seem to realise she was a journalist. Brogden "slipped one arm around the small of my back, leant down and said, 'Are you available?'
She said then Brogden "must have clicked".
"Brogden froze. I wasn't a young girl he might try to chat up. I was a newspaper reporter."
Brogden earlier said that his comments were "absolutely and completely inappropriate".
Opposition transport spokesman Peter Debnam and deputy Opposition leader Barry O'Farrell said yesterday they would run for Brogden's old job.
Liberal Party members were still in shock over Brogden's resignation, Debnam said.
"The rate at which this issue exploded and the speed with which John resigned has left everybody traumatised. There was no feeling that it would lead to an immediate resignation.
"I don't think anybody had a sense that it was about to erupt like a volcano and that John would so quickly make a decision in the interest of the party to resign."
Brogden's resignation came a month after Carr's retirement gave the Liberals hope of victory in the 2007 state elections.
Bob Carr, whose wife was the object of Brogden's comments, is a bigger man than most:
Bob Carr offers support to Brogden (http://seven.com.au/news/nationalnews/103759)
Date: 31/08/05
Bob Carr has offered his support to former NSW opposition leader John Brogden following his suicide attempt, saying he should put the past behind him and look to the future.
Mr Brogden resigned on Monday after admitting he had acted inappropriately at a Sydney function by referring to the former premier's Malaysian-born wife Helena as a "mail-order bride".
He also apologised for pinching a female journalist on the bottom and propositioning another at the same function.
"Helena and I just want to send a message to John Brogden that he should look to his future," Mr Carr told ABC radio.
"As far as we're concerned this incident is behind us, it should be behind him.
"The world accepts that all of us make mistakes and he's got a big future as a politician, a member of this community and as a father of his son Flinders.
"We wish him well and we want to encourage him to move beyond this thing."
Police said Mr Brogden was found unconscious in a back room of his northern beaches electorate office at about 10.30pm on Tuesday.
He was rushed by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital with what police said were self-inflicted injuries. He is expected to be released from hospital on Wednesday.

^---wow that's hardcore. Normally stuff like that would make a man rebuked but eventually he'd come back in the frat boy television circuit doing sports shows or lowball comedy shit.
suicide, just, wow.
Bob Carr, whose wife was the object of Brogden's comments, is a bigger man than most...Well, even if someone referred to my girlfriend as a "mail order bride," I wouldn't want the man to kill himself over the guilt.=P That is hardcore...

Well, yeah, it would have sucked if Carr would have said, "God, I so wished Brogden would have succeeded in killing hisself."
But there's nothing saying that he couldn't have said, "Brogden is letch."

How about this "piece of work" who seems will be getting what is coming to him -- Thomas J. Remillard who sexually harrassed his worker Diane Lee in the LA City government.
Despite Lee's objections, he wrote, Remillard made sexually suggestive remarks to Lee, touched her lap, repeatedly called her at home, tried to kiss her and mimicked Asians, Hispanics and blacks in the workplace. After she filed a complaint, the letter said, Remillard criticized Lee's work performance and made racial slurs against her.
L.A. County Settles Sexual and Racial Harassment Suit for $300,000 (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/state/la-me-harass31aug31,1,388803.story?coll=la-news-state)
August 31, 2005
Los Angeles County will pay more than $300,000 to settle claims brought by an employee who said she was subjected to racial and sexual harassment by a top manager in the county's Department of Public Works.
County supervisors voted 4-0 behind closed doors Tuesday to settle the case after a county investigation confirmed Diane Lee's allegations. The investigation also found more than a dozen other women who complained about the behavior of the manager, Thomas J. Remillard, who was fired a year ago.
The case was one of several legal issues that the board settled at its weekly meeting, including two medical malpractice cases involving county hospitals and a class-action lawsuit filed against software giant Microsoft Corp.
In March 2004, Lee, the chief information officer for public works, complained about Remillard, a deputy director in the department. The county's Office of Affirmative Action Compliance hired an outside firm to investigate the allegations filed by Lee, along with other allegations filed against Remillard by another female worker.
Interviewing retired and current employees, investigators found 14 other women who also accused Remillard of making inappropriate remarks to them, according to records filed with the county's Civil Service Commission. Four of those women complained that the behavior was continuous and interfered with their work performance. In a termination letter filed with the Civil Service Commission when Remillard was fired, then-interim director of public works Donald Wolfe outlined the probe's findings.
Remillard and Lee did not return telephone calls for comment.
Under the settlement, Lee will receive $265,000 and up to $20,000 to pay for psychological counseling in the wake of the harassment. The county will also pay her attorney $15,675.
In a confidential memo obtained by The Times, county lawyers recommended that supervisors settle the claims.
The fact that the county had found Lee's complaints to be credible would make a legal defense "challenging," the lawyers wrote.
Also Tuesday, the board unanimously voted to pay $350,000 to settle a wrongful-death suit involving a woman who was diagnosed with hepatitis at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center.
Medical staff discharged Robin Garcia, 21, without scheduling a follow-up appointment in a timely manner, according to a memo by county lawyers. Her health deteriorated and she died of liver failure before a liver transplant could be performed.
In a second malpractice case, supervisors agreed to pay $127,500 to a 55-year-old woman whose left leg was amputated below the knee after staff members at County-USC Medical Center failed to properly treat a blood clot that developed after colon surgery.
In both cases, county lawyers wrote that the medical work "fell below the standard of care" and was directly responsible for the injuries.
Supervisors also approved a settlement in a class-action lawsuit the county had brought with other local government agencies in California against Microsoft.
The suit had accused the company of using its monopoly in personal computer software to overcharge them.
The details of the settlement were not immediately made public.

Said Maryland Comptroller William Donald Schaefer:
"I get so irritated that we just open the borders, let everybody in, put everybody in the schools, educate them, all that sort of stuff, and that's the way it is. And Americans (are) going to have to bear the cost," Schaefer said during a discussion of a state contract to teach English to students who speak another language at home.
He followed that up with a comment, "Oh, come on. Korea is another one. All of a sudden they're our friends, too, shooting missiles at us."
Schaefer Refuses To Apologize To Korean Americans (http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0706/345803.html)
From ABC 7 Wednesday July 19, 2006 2:11pm
Annapolis (AP) - Maryland Comptroller William Donald Schaefer says he won't apologize for comments that linked South Korean immigrants to North Korea's recent missile launches.
"I don't have to apologize. I didn't say anything to apologize for," Schaefer said Tuesday after meeting with Korean-American leaders.
The group requested the session to discuss Schaefer's comments at a July 6 Board of Public Works meeting when, as he periodically does, he complained about immigrants and U.S. immigration policies.
Korean organizations were upset not only that the comptroller seemed to confuse South Korea with North Korea, which Schaefer said was a simple mistake, but that his disparaging comments could lead to discrimination and negative feelings against Korean- Americans.
"He's treating us as if we were a bunch of foreigners instead of Korean-Americans," said Chung Pak, chairman of the League of Korean Americans of Maryland. "We were very disappointed he didn't know what he said was wrong."
Sandy Kwon, a 17-year-old high school student from Montgomery County (website - news) who took advantage of special courses for immigrants through the third grade, said she felt "as if nothing was accomplished" Tuesday.
"He was going pretty much, 'What's the big deal?' I am a friend of Korean-Americans for many years," she said.
Schaefer said he is a longtime friend of Korean-Americans and provided police protection as mayor of Baltimore to owners of inner-city stores that were often targeted by armed robbers.
"I've been in South Korea. I've been in the homes of South Koreans," he said. "If it was something I feel in my heart I have to apologize for, I would have apologized before this meeting."
Young Kim, president of the Korean American Association of Metropolitan Washington, and David Han, president of the Korean Society of Maryland, took a generally conciliatory tone, saying that hoped for another meeting with Schaefer.
"All of us stressed to him that we are Americans. We are taxpayers. We are voters," Han said.
Han and Kim said their organizations do not endorse political candidates and deflected questions about whether they think Schaefer should step aside. But Pak and Kwon suggested it might be time for the 84-year-old Schaefer, a former governor, to end his half-century career as an elected official.
"I do appreciate everything he's done for Maryland and stuff, but I feel he was slightly offensive, and maybe it's just time to kind of rest and go," Kwon said.
A few hours after the meeting, Montgomery County delegate Peter Franchot, who is running against Schaefer in the Democratic primary, issued a statement expressing disappointment that the comptroller did not apologize.
