For many southern Californians, summer is the season for beaches, chaise lounges and the quest for the perfect tan. Not for Margaret Qiu. She and thousands of other Asian American women are going to great lengths to avoid the sun -- fighting to preserve or enhance their pale complexions with expensive creams, masks, gloves, professional face scrubs and medical procedures.

Wow, and here are most white chicks wanting to get darker, the exact opposite is true for some Asian women. What a world we live in.

There's been way too much of these bleach stories.

Or more like, the same story endlessly reprinted as filler on slow news days.

Asian women have been trying to be pale for thousands of years. Though some Asian countries are extremely prosperous, most are not, and dark skin probably still conjures images of low class farmers working under the hot Asian weather. North America has been industrialized long enough to lose touch with their agricultural roots, and paleness indicates a sort of sickliness gained from too much labour in factories and mines.

Even out of the four advanced Asian countries, two (Japan and Korea) keep their agricultural sectors on major life support, thus allowing it to perpetuate its values and effects on the social structure long beyond the point when it would have died out, and Hong Kong has so many immigrants from the mainland that the standard easily gets reinforced.
