King Norodom Sihamoni has signed a special decree giving movie star Angelina Jolie Cambodian citizenship in recognition of her environmental work in the country, a senior official said on Thursday.
"The King signed the legal papers and that means she now has Cambodian citizenship," Toun Siphan, director of the government's international relation department, told Reuters.
The Oscar-winning actress, who adopted a Cambodian son, Maddox, has agreed to spend $5 million over the next 15 years to set up a wildlife sanctuary in a former Khmer Rouge stronghold in the northwestern province of Battambang.
Here's the source (http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=57766) but you needn't bother, I copied the whole article.

What's the deal with Angelina's Cambodi-philia? She loves the country, the wildlife, the children... but not the men.

Maybe cuz adopting the kid made her feel she should love the culture and land.
Well I wouldn't expect every aid worker to marry into their host culture. At least she's not one of those who flies in for a ribbon cutting and photo op and then flies back home.

She's done a lot of good. I think this is a noble thing she's done, although no other adoptive parents are probably going to be able to do the same. Still, it shows her dedication to her son's culture.

The actress adopted her Cambodian son, Maddox, three years ago, and has recently adopted an orphaned baby girl from Ethiopia.
She got a baby girl from Ethiopia. She is not a "Cambodi-philia."

Good question. Depends.
In your example, what buys more, the !00, or the 10?

Well Giving is Giving, especially when you don't need to. And I'd argue that Angelina at least is more than an armchair-donater, she's going out to the field and experiencing what's actually going on over there, versus just writing a check and calling your accountant to record the tax credit.

given how she acted back in the day where she was smoochin her brother and talking about just having had sex w/ billy bob in the back of a car, i'd say she's grown up a bit. good for her.

Given that sexual repression is pretty high up on the issue lists of this board i doubt that comes at any surprise.

i love how she dresses him like a refugee and her newly adopted daughter in traditional African clothing. you think she does so on a daily basis or only when she knows the cameras are around?

The real question should be whether Jolie should have accepted the offer of citizenship?
Consider the Human Rights Watch reports on Camobdia.
http://www.hrw.org/doc?t=asia&c=cambod
Amnesty International.
http://web.amnesty.org/report2005/khm-summary-eng
US State Department report on Cambodia.

If you believe the negative marks given to Cambodia's government, then you have to think that the the Jolie citizenship thing is just a political image ruse.
The idea of awarding her citizenship has been in the works for a year or so. According to this article (http://www.hellomagazine.com/film/2004/07/09/angelinajolie/), Jolie had been interested in the idea back in 2004.
"He did mention giving me Cambodian citizenship, and I would be honoured," she (Jolie) said after meeting the politician. "I would certainly be thrilled, so I'm sure I'll be moving forward to actually receiving that."

or maybe it's as simple as her wanting to be
a citizen of the country her first child was born in?

Oh, her intentions may be honest.
She supposedly even bought a home in Battambang, Cambodia.
But I'm wondering if it's a good move for her to be getting involved in Cambodia, which may be politically unstable.

Cambodia still has a king? if he's desposed, then I don't think his "legal papers" count. Ethiopia has a royal house, too, but it's not recognized as the legitimate government.
