View Full Version : How bad are your cramps?

I know that the men are probably irking at the thought of this topic, but as you know, I must ask. :D How bad do you get them? Are they pretty regular for you? How long do they usually last? If you get them pretty badly, how do you take care of yourself?
As for me, since I started this thread, I get them pretty badly. I don't lash at anyone who approaches me, but my back aches, I get a headache, I feel like I have to go to the bathroom every ten minutes, and it feels like a few knives have stabbed me in the abdomen. So, what do I do? I either lay in bed all day (if I don't have work or classes). If I have either work or class, it's Motrin, Advil, or Midol to the rescue. What do you take? I used to ride it out without any medicine, but there was a point I couldn't take it anymore. My periods usually last no more than 4 days. 4 days of hell. :) I also drink warm liquids. Usually, I don't eat very much either because my appetite goes down the drain.

I used to get them really really bad. I'd just pop Midols and Advil until I started getting light headed. It's been to the point where I had to skip days of school 'cuz of it.
But now that I'm on birth control, I don't get cramps. Maybe just a little bit on the first day, but after that, it's clear sailing.

Currently my cramps aren't so bad... but ... it's the back aches & bloated feeling that usually bother me the most.
I never really got into the habit of taking anything for my cramps... but as A.N. said -- eversince I've been on the pill - the duration of my period has really shortened. I used to have it for 3-5 days... now... it's more like 2-3.... and wayy less bleeding too. Also... my cramps & back aches have lessenned... although they're not completely gone.
I sit in an office job all day... so luckily -- even on the bad days... I pretty much just suffer through the day at my desk...

cramps are mainly caused by the lack of IRON in your system. so the next time u get cramps try drinking milk. i drink a whole 1.5litres of milk and it helps me go through the day. maybe it'll work for you too :)

I hardly ever get cramps on my periods, but my pms is vicious. That's when my fuse gets cut in half and I bloodlust. And god damnit, I can't go on the pill. Any ideas that would be convincing enough? My mom would just refer me to my sister, and when I asked my sister, she just said, "Don't take God's gift of fertility away. Besides, it might make you infertile permanently."

but then you have to have your midlife crisis, talk like an old lady out of touch, and you get hot flashes. isn't that like mandatory for women during and after menopause?
and karizma, no, those weak little pills might help you girl's cramps, but they do not help with crippling migraines. me: "do you have some aspirin or anything to help with headaches, i got a migraine setting in..." her: "um, yeah, hold on *fidgets with midol bottle* here.." me: "only one? i said migraine, not minor headache. i don't think this' stronger than the 6 excedrin migraine i have to take." her: "it'll work, it's really strong." me: *stupidly takes midol* her: "lemme know what happens to a guy after he takes midol" me: "wtf are you talking about?" her: "you'll see...." me: "you shoulda waited till i swallowed it *spits out pill*" that's what happened the second time. the first time i went to induce vomitting, unsure of ther ramifications of what it would do to me when i was in jr. high.
so again, i feel for women, but don't give a guy a fookin midol...x_X
although tricking a boyfriend into taking a birth control pill is funny, i've seen friends do that. :D

Ok, lemme experience those things... hot flashes and what not... thats just relatively only a short phase that can be remedied thru nutritional supplements or whateverz...
so like you try bleeding every single month for many many years... and than you tell me how fun it is...

Technically, you don't HAVE to get your period every month if you don't want to. Double back on birth control pills (skip the green ones, just go from dark blue back to white)... Doctors say it's all fine and healthy as long as you let your period come once every few months or so.

Cindy has irregular periods anyway. and naw, it's ok, guys have their problems too, but i gotta admit, bleeding out the crotch for 3-5 days doesn't sound so awesome; and i never downplayed having a period.

One of my girlfriends used to get cramps REALLY badly during her periods. I put a hot water bag on her tummy and gave her a massage for those few days. Dunno if it actually helped but she seemed appreciative.
She definetly whined less to me...lol!
I support the Pill also. Totally cleared up my skin and regulated my period and my cramps are almost non-existent (except for like two days a month). A friend of mine used to have her period just about every three weeks and each time it lasts about 8 days. She's skinny as a rod, so she'll drain sheet-white every time. I convinced her to try the pill and she is fine now, think she may have even gained some weight.

I used to get these god awful cramps to the point where I would feel suicidal.
I hate taking medication but I was totally overdosing on Advil.
I tried chinese herbal tonics that worked for awhile.
Then I received acupuncture everyday for three months, it was a huge pain in the ass but now I'm cramp free!!
Ah, the wonders..
I know a lot of doctors prescribe the pill for severe cramps and irregulation but that just covers up the real problem, a quick fix.
Don't want to sound too "new agey" but I feel that even though holistic/alternative medication or methods might take a while to reap full benefits, it's definitely better for the body and the results are longer term.
regularly exposing your body to unnecessary chemcials can not be good....

I agree... going on the pill just scares me... I hate medications. I'm on enough already. I'd much rather do "natural" alternatives.

Realllllly? The chinese stuff has never worked for me... and all of those herbal tonics and little bean-like pills have always made me throw up right after I took em. Blecccccch! :gross:
But it's good that they work for you.
& as I've posted earlier, I'm having a much easier time w/ cramps and other menstrual stuff now that I'm on the pill....

Its strange, but I don't seem to have cramps anymore. I do though just a little of minor back pains, fatigue, and going to the bathroom frequently part.

The patch is already available.. ask for it by name.. Ortho Evra by the same folks who brought you Ortho Tricyclen.. and they've also recently released Ortho Tricyclen Lo which has less estrogen in it. You got to love drug reps.
The college clinic where I worked for a month has had limited success with getting people to try it. The most common complaint being about it being new, and how putting on a patch isn't like swallowing a pill psychologically. Questions like "how do I know it's absorbing?" often come up. And of the 200 or so people in the clinic that are on the patch, 4-5 have had complaints about the patch not sticking. But the people who use it and love it say it's much more convenient than the pill. You change the patch once a week versus having to take a pill once a day.
In any case, birth control pills shouldn't be just a ho hum decision.. it can fuck you up bad or even make your cramps/bleeding worse if you're not on the right dose. And of course, smoking and birth control pills increases the risk of developing clots in your bloodstream even though I've never seen one.
