Ok, i a straight guy with 5cm long fingernails on all nails?. Is that hideous? Should i cut it? How short is acceptable?
If a gal had 5cm long fingernails on all nails. Is that hideous? Should she cut it? How long is acceptable?
Should there be a law preventing school girls from having long fingernails?

I think long nails look weird on guys....or just plain wrong..but that's just me. Whatever floats yer boat~ On some girls it's attractive and looks good, on some others not so much.

^ Well usually if they're neat and nicely manicured or painted then it's all good...if you're a girl that is. I'd prefer lighter pastel-ish colors like white or light purple/pink but blood red works for me too. If you're a guy, I dunno, sue me for being too accustomed to societal norms, but I wouldn't think long nails would look good on any guy.

I'd agree wif u on this. Whether long nails on guys and gals look good depends not on how long they are but how well they are maintained. To me they have to have all the same length and only light colours, square tip then they are all ok
Are these nails hideous?

Long fingernails are gross. Doesn't matter on guys or girls. They collect dirt, dust, grease, shit and who knows what else...

Too long is just icky! I get the shivers whenever I see a guy or a girl with long nails.... I prefer guys with short trimmed nails, and women with shortish manicured nails, and I never try to grow my nails too long.

It's sort of hard to wipe your ass with long fingernails. Stuff keeps getting stuck inside the tips. :frown:
Admirer: Hey! New nail polish?
Dumb dumb: Crap! Not again.
they're scary and cringe-inducing for me. having had my share of broken nails and the pain that comes with said breakage, i don't know how people can stand it. i don't even want to think about the press-on ones....i just keep thinking of bacteria and germs and your nails falling off from infection. that's enough to keep me away from the salons. yuck.

5 cm is way too long, even for a girl. for guys, i think it makes them look ungroomed, and lazy. you should so definitely cut it so that no white shows.
I certainly hope not. I am a young chinese guy living in HK, and have not cut my nails since 2004. I have fingernails 6cm long, with pinkey nails and thumb nails being even longer, and find they command great respect. My family emplore me to keep them long, they claim it makes them look good. The status side is very important to them, and to me as well. I am exempt from any manual labour, as my parents don't want my nails broken. Life is good, although sometimes difficult for me with such long nails.

I personally think it is more how well manicured your fingernails are rather than how long they are which dictates whether they are ugly or lovely.
A person can have 1 meter of mails and still look good if their nails are well manicured.
I would also agree that long nails is a status symbol, particulalry if well manicured. Anyoen that has actually tried to grow >1cm would agree i think.
Anyway Jwhk give me an email, would like to discuss your opinion further.

Erhm. Where as it might be a status symbol and such elsewhere, I think that for practicality's sake, hygiene's sake, and the sake of the be-geeblies I get when I think of having nails of any sort over 5 millimeters in length, I'd say long nails are unattractive.
They stop being nails and turn into claws/talons meant for maiming and killing. -shudders-

My nails are very clean, I found that dirt only gets under very short nails where it gets trapped at say 1, 2, 3mm length, much longer nails, like mine, wash beautifully, any dirt just doesn;t get a chance to be trapped. I suppose it's what you do with your hands as well, I just don't get mine dirty, shower and bath water clean them very well. With such long nails like mine, dirt is not the problem. Sanitation is very important, and I don't ever remember being sick or poisioned because of sanitation problems with having such long nails. My parents always expect my claws to be clean and healthy, as a further visable symbol of such status they represent. Long, healthy, and clean nails are what is expected from my parents, they make big sacrifices in life to present me in this manner to make them look good.

In Hong Kong and other parts of China, young men, with extreme nail length is sought after, parents encourage male kids to do this. I know other similar aged guys who do likewise, some, or all nails. We think it is attractive, because of the time, and difficulty of growing such specimens, they represent beauty. It's a supreme status symbol for males, and especially the young. Such guys have an easy life, as they are protected from difficulties of hard manual work. I don't get people saying they are unattractive, but rather they are very attracted to them because of their uniqueness, especially by business people visiting.
so what do you do for a living?
sitting on your ass isn't considered an attractive trait OR a legitimate job, mind you.

maybe not hideous, but definitely dangerous. when i forget to cut mine for a couple days, it gets chipped/rough. last week this happened, i touched my face, and ended up giving myself a cut between the eyebrows- mini squall-style. i immediately cut my nails and when ppl asked how i got that? i told them it was a knife/fall, etc.
anyways, i'd say attach some pics cause i'm quite curious.

I help out my family in our export company, I don't sit on my ass all day as you put it. I am only 18, so yes my hands are smooth, they have never done hard manual work because I have been growing nails for a long time, since early school days infact. Besides, my girlfriend likes my long nails and soft hands. Yes, Yes.
Thanks.
but WHAT do you do? filing? typing? pointing to places where people can put things?
i'm sure you're a great person and all, but i like guys with rough hands. it shows they know how to use them.
btw....do you help your gf comb her hair with your nails or like help her scratch her back or wherever it's itchy?

Great, wonderful. I give you kudos for making such a personal statement of beauty with your nails.
In the meantime, I'll break and chip my cruddy male nails while playing basketball and clip my nails to a manageable length so as not to catch food bits under them while cooking.
For form and functionality, your talons have no use. Congratz on the "easy life".

Guys with rough hands surely show the type of work they have to perform. As for beautification of men, I have grown these, they are all mine, they are not the product of some instant beauty salon visit. I see it as no different to guys growing long hair. My father performs practical work at the warehouse, and he has two long thumb nails, whilst not as long as my nails, his would be 30mm each, and he performs many heavy tasks with his nails, but he prefers I do more gentle tasks that will not break my nails. He is very proud of my nails, as he is with his thumb nails.

Mine are also male nails, but just very long, I am still a male. I don't do sport for obvious reasons, I function very well with such length. I don't think that life is easy just because I have long nails, it represents it's own difficulties in many ways, but many obsticles are removed for me in life, to keep my claws long, this is where having parents who want me to grow my nails help, they and I like the status involved, it comes at a high price. My girlfriend tells me that she does not want me to cut my nails yet either. And we have no problems pleasing easy other. Infact, she has the job of filing the ends of them for me, to keep them smooth, to save me catching them on anything rough, like some blue collar workers hands!!!.

Chill out, you posted about the easy life yourself, not I. And like I said, congratz on living the life you do. I'm just answering the question. Craptastic. Don't flip out because I don't agree with the "uniqueness" of having long "male nails". You, yourself, called your nails claws. Don't type so fast, you might chip a nail
blue-collar? i don't think so. my dad has rough hands, and he's a dba who graduated from cornell. my stepdad has rough hands, a phd, and is a geologist with argonne. my bf has rough hands and is worth 7 figures, all earned without manual labor. i can go on and on about men i know who have rough hands and are white-collar but i think you get the picture.

Das ok man, I generally don't like long hair on guys either so don't have to feel singled out. There is only one thing that is important about length on guys, and even then...
For me, a person basing their social status on good looks or good looking attributes, whether guy or gal, is in my opinion on the shallower end of the spectrum. Also, anything that limits my ability to play sports or do anything is in my opinion impractical. I like practical.

Yes i would agree with jwhk that long fingernails is a good status symbol. Shows that you do not need to engage in phsyical activity.
Not that im saying short nails/rough hands = no status. more that long nails = status because how can a road worker maintain a set of long fngernails.
I grow my fingernails for a number of reasons
1. status
2. weapon
3. ensure i remain the longest nails
I actually see many guys from Asian cultures grow their nails. Most only grow one or two nails because they cant cope with the length but most try to grow and fail because of the phsyical work they are required to do.
I think long fingernails are hideous if they are poorly manicured or dirty. But if you abstain from physical work and spend time on your nails then they can be loevely whether on male or female.

As much as this thread has been going on, I've noticed that it's so far only a trend in the members from Asia (or people posting saying they're from Asia) that are really supportive of their nails, whereas none of their counterparts on this side of the pond are saying anything positive for it.
Fortunately, I have never had one break off, as I am super careful with manual work. I use instruments rather than my nails themselves, screwdrivers, knives etc. ( 9 out of 10 nails really long is not a good look in my books). It's the full set of ten that freak alot of people out, "how do you cope"', they all keep saying.

I do think so... long fingernails are hideous. Not so much as hideous as very annoying.
As a young Chinese male, with 10 long fingernails, believing in their status as family symbols of pride, what end shape do you guys think is the best shape for such long nails on a young male to have, i.e, natural end, pointy, blunt, sharp, squared off, etc. My girlfriend has last night cut the tips off my claws, making them totally blunt. They now take on a different look and feel, she claims they are less dangerous to myself, herself, and others, therefore less prone to accidentally scratching a person with. If nails are to be grown to such lengths as mine, do guys, look more masculine, with blunt ends, and pointed more feminine for woman. Does anyone agree or disagree?. My parents are very happy with their new look, but have urged me to be careful with their new end blunt shape. My nails had not been cut in a few years, it amazed me how quickly the sharp scissors went through the points of my claws, the material seemed soft, yet strong, as some strength was required for the cutting of about 10mm off their length. I am not interested in any further reduction in length, as it would be too upsetting for my families pride. My girlfriend enjoyed the task, and my father has now even thought he might have his thumb nails done likewise.

Earlier posters said they had friends and family to help with stuff, or special tools to help them get stuff done.
Personally, I prefer to wipe my own butt, since I got out of the habit of asking people to wipe my behind at age 2.

There is most definitely a differance in attitude about fingernails between westerners (and the chinese who have adopted western tastes), and chinese. Chinese culture has looked at long nails as a sign not only of beauty and good luck, but also to show that a person does not have to lower themselves to doing manual labor. Long nails have indicated that a person is intelligent enough to work with his brains not his hands or is wealthy and well born. This has been the attitude since Ming Dynasty times 500 years ago. It is most definitely not the attitude of northern europeans or americans who have been forcing their tastes on the world for the last 100 years.
Now that China is assuming a leadership position in the world and becoming rich and educated in its own right, copying western styles should not so important as being chinese. In the future as China grows stronger and stronger don't be surprised if chinese styles are copied by westerners.
But yes there is nothing as chinese as long fingernails on men or sometimes women. It is something chinese should be proud of and with the new wealth of the new china this chinese tradition should grow and copying the ugly western taste of bitten or extremely short nails on men and plastic or short painted nails on women should slowly fade away.

Nice to see that somethings survived the Communist Revolution. Wonder how many of the Chinese population still feel the same way about this old tradition, seeing as they are all apart of this new wealth in China. [/sarcasm] Even though there is money flowing through China's economy, the trickle down effect is leaving much to be desired for much of the population. Look at one of the more recent postings in the Current Events thread and the how the retired older generation are being taken care of, because obviously taking care of the older generation is a venerable custom that was passed along through the history of China. Seems like that would be more important than someone who decided they are above the worldly tortures of wiping their own rears after using the bathroom, because their family saw fit to "spoil" their fingernails. Awesome.
