I've been out of work for over 4 months now and have had some interviews and each time I have been shortlisted only to fail at the last stage due to other applicants being that little bit more experienced than me.
The final straw today was yet again I was shortlisted for a job which I know that I can do with my eyes shut and paying very well and I got this e-mail back from them today
"Although we were extremely impressed with your experience and qualifications, we have selected another candidate to fill the position whose experience and qualifications better fit our current needs. However, we would be pleased to retain your CV on file in the event that a suitable vacancy arises in the future."
I'm getting totally sick of it all and feel like a total failure.
Any tips or advice anybody can share?

jimbo, i was unemployed for 11 months and i know exactly what you mean.
1) that you have to keep looking goes without saying
2) make a serious consideration in getting a part-time menial job while you keep looking. you need an income.
3) give yourself a goal. maybe grad school. you need a sense of purpose, something that you can work towards on a daily basis.

Thanks guys.
I was disappointed in not getting the job as I knew I would of been an asset to the company and done a good job I told them that as such.
I've been busy applying for other jobs as well but the ones available do seem to be paying your equivalent of 15k a year less.
I've applied for other jobs and am just waiting to hear back.

I was unemployed for 7 months before I landed this position at my law firm. The market is just bad everywhere. I really hope that you will find something soon. I know you can! Just don't it frustrate you.

Whoa, nelly, lemme tell ya, I hate unemployment just as much as anyone on YW. I won't even begin to get into the hell this past year has been (although if you're feeling masochistic, you can go check out my blog at http://achtungbaby.net:P)
Don't make the mistake I did -- take whatever (within reason) comes your way! I held out for several months and didnt realize the value of having a daily friggen routine. Sitting at home will make you rot (unless you're the webmaster of YW).

me, i understand the importance of having a purpose and what not... but when it comes to grad school... thats a big decision... and i think that should be chosen because you want to and not based on feeling like you have to...
Its important to keep yourself busy and not to despair. I think interviewers like enthusiastic candidates not jaded ones. There really is no shame in getting a more entry-level type job to gain more experience even if the pay is lower. Companies are very "value-driven" these days --> cheap asses!! so its much harder to get high paying jobs.
If you have the talent, it will be recognized!

Yeah I really hope so, What happened to me was that I was shortlisted for a job paying £30k a year and almost got it and then having to apply for jobs which are paying little over half that just to get back in the market place.
I know that I am more than capable of doing a great job anywhere and am getting sick of the constant knockbacks due to somebody else having that bit more experience than me.
Something will come up eventually I know but its a question of when.

After 6 months of being unemployed and numerous applications I finally have a job!
Its a massive pay drop but due to market conditions I can't really complain that much!
