Just curious to see if any of you play in a band/are part of a band, or are currently forming a band/want a band.....play a musical instrument, etc.

Just basically wanna see if any of you are interested in rock/punk/ska/alternative music....

I play bass. I was in a metal band for a while, but that ended when we all graduated from college. Now I'm in a punk band.

Are you thinking of starting something up?

I'm the only one living in my neighborhood that plays amplified.....hell, come to think of it I'm the only one that plays a musical instrument in this neighborhood. Do any of you go to jam sessions when they're held at clubs?

TyroneK(prettypretty)

Yeah. I've been to a couple. They're worthwhile because you can meet other musicians there. Even if they aren't free, you can make connections that can lead to gigs. I also find that fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants feeling really fun when it all works out.

Go to the clubs that have bands playing the kind of music that you like and make friends with the musicians, ask if they will show you something on the guitar, and then go home and practice, then come back the following week and ask if you could get up on stage and jam (need to get past the nervousness of being in front of people if you're going to have a band). Don't try to start a band without having experience playing with others. It's great that you're surrounded by relatives that play, try playing with them as often as you can--even if you may not like their choice of music. The idea is to always jam with other people in order to develop your timing, cause sitting alone in your room won't work. Good Luck.

Learn how to play a barre chord. Slide up and down the neck with that same finger pattern.

Get some friends to play bass and drums. Channel your angst. You're now the next Green Day.

Go make Asian Americans proud.

Play keyboards but not in a band... work with synthesizers and sequencers; I'm my own band. Used to do trance but now more into the jazzy side of DnB, Acid Jazz, and Downtempo. Send a PM if you want to hear anything... mp3 format.

I play drums! But I'm not in a band or anything, I'm pretty good though.. Also I like punk music, American or Japanese (and yes, I know they are drastically different.) American bands I like are Anti-Flag and Propagandhi, Japanese bands that aren't really punk but are qualified as punk in Japanese are Mongol 800 and Swoosh. Yep. :)

Where do you live, axi0m? The world needs more drummers. Especially those who live on the east coast and want to play with me.

Anybody here DJ? How hard is it to pick up?

My boyfriend and his friends used to DJ when they were in highschool, but then some shit happened and they are all pretty much doin their own thing now, some of them are still friends and some of them still have shit with each other LOL

Anyways, I don't know if it's really hard to learn how, but it does take alot of practice to gain skill and actually get good at it. My bf wanted to teach me but he never got around to, once he gets some turntables of his own I'll have to try it out sometime :P

Practice practice practice. I guarantee you'll suck for a long time. It gets easier depending on the music you spin.

Is anyone puzzled at why radio stations only play the same 10 songs hour after hour???? Ok not puzzled, I know WHY they do it but....I can't stand it anymore!!! Songs that I used to love now are meaningless to me when I hear them...they are just part of this gross conglomeration of mainstream radio that saddens me :(

These are some of the bands I listen to: WEEZER!!!!! hehe, Death Cab for Cutie, Phantom Planet, Smashing Pumpkins, Ben Kweller, OK GO

not exactly a band i was classically trained on the piano for eight years and gave up the five beat note for the four beat jazz n' blues style...i guess i do jam sessions cuz of improv opportunities...

i taught myself to play the guitar...not great at it but i'm fumbling my way...i gave it up for a while until my delicious friends bought me a mockingbird- neckthru series and i'm back on it again.

I play drums. Holy shit I am a walking sterotype. LoL. My friend is in a elitest rock band. For those of you who don't know what that is, it rock music that is so technically complicated. It is hard for them to play. Good expamples are King Crimson and Dream Theatre.

I see there are musicians here. I want to post this question: Why are there more Japanese coming into the U.S. to learn music and hone their chops, than do other asian groups? Glad to hear some are playing, will play and have played.

How many here are self-taught and how many took lessons? And have you ever wished that you should've taken the opposite route?

If you'd already answered this question, then no need to answer again.

I'm a self-taught drummer.. I DID play snare drum in the band at school but that doesn't really help you out too much on the drumset. I'm glad I didn't take lessons.. I'm good enough now, without spending money on them. :) Also, I don't know what you mean about Japanese coming to the US.. only band I can think of that came here is L'Arc~En~Ciel and I don't even know how well they were received or what happened. But, if a Japanese band is popular enough to even think about coming here I probably don't listen to them anyway. :)

I'd learn to play the guitar by teaching myself in order to learn what I wanted to learn and to save money. Lots of money! I'm such a cheap bastard. :D Money saved from not taking lessons afforded me two decent guitars, two amps and various pedals.

What I meant when I was referring to the Japanese musicians coming to the U.S. to learn music, is due to the fact that when I hear or read about asians coming here to learn music from the top performers in the different genres, or to seek out those that they hope will be their mentors, the majority of these musicians are overseas Japanese. I mean I could be wrong, maybe things aren't that way. But I have yet to hear of musicians coming here from Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea or Thailand to seek out and to learn from the masters. Have you run across anything like this?

axi0m
12-22-2002, 08:26 PM
Oh yea, now that you mention it I think I've heard that too. And no, I don't know any other Asians coming to America to learn.. Perhaps it's because of the Western influence in Japan, but pop music in all countries is like this.. No clue. :)

hehe always wanted to play an instrument
esp. the sax but never had the money to continue lessons
I sing I dance I write my own songs
and may try to learn guitar soon but heh
yeah I'm trying to pull together a R&B/hip-hop/soul/pop group together
I'm currently solo working on record deal but would prefer to have group
styles ranging from Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, Fugees, City High, etc.

right now I'm looking to see if anyone can help me play the backgrounds for my music though whether or not I get a group
even a solo artist has got to have a band do his instrumentals while on stage or in the studio heh
:P

I learned bass on my own using the knowledge I got from 7 painful years of piano lessons.

I think it's best to get some kind of instruction somewhere along the way. Otherwise, you're going to get stuck in certain techniques and habits. That makes it hard to progress and grow beyond a certain point.

Learning how to play guitar right now. Very much a beginner. I can somewhat sing, but not very well. I do know how to play trumpet. We can have a ska thing going on... WHEE!!! I wanna learn piano and drums. Both look fun. I'm trying to teach myself how to mix, but I'd be a computer DJ since I dun got any equipment or turntables. Yeesh. Darn things are so damn expensive. I'm pretty sure I can play most horn instruments, except for maybe the french horn, bugle, and tronbone. I also did the good asian kid thing, and learned violin when I was in elementary school. Don't ask me to do it now though, cuz I forgot EVERYTHING.

It's been my dream in the past couple of years to learn how to play acoustic guitar- but I don't have the money to learn. I love hearing rock songs in their rawest, most bare bones form- i.e. acoustic guitar or keyboard only.
