yeah skating takes too much patience but i started when i was 11 been doing it on and off and now im 19 and still love it but snowboard is soooo much easier to learn and its for everyone. though you can pick up longboard alot of people are starting to do that.
i snowboard. been at it off and on for like 6 or 7 years, but only the last 2 seasons did i really try to go consistently to get better.
always wanted to skateboard but my mom never let me when i was a kid, cuz she thought it was dangerous and un-ladylike. i've been wanting a longboard since i saw a kid ride to class with one about 5 years ago. but now that i'm back in SF, the hills and the crowds makes getting one less and less desirable.

haha yeah i know what your talking about man asian parents huh?, but i always found a way to get what i want and after awhile my conservative parents become liberals
i think it was more the fact that i was a girl, but who knows? i was already a tomboy, and i guess she didn't want me to be more so. i already scraped myself up riding my bike, so i guess she figured a skateboard would be much worse.

Skateboard...but that was like...20 yrs ago?!
...and I sucked.
Tried snowboarding. It was fun but couldn't hang anymore (took a lot outta my already jacked up knees). Guess some old dogs just aren't meant to learn new tricks. Stuck on skiing ever since. :frown:

Mista Hooligan,
I've been trying to get back into it. Bought a board at Copelands. Been trying to learn to ollie.
Found this web page.
http://www.ehow.com/how_4809_ollie-skateboard.html
Not getting this part:
Practice pushing down as fast as you can with your back foot and putting all your weight on the tail. This is the initial motion of the trick.
Am I supposed to push hard or "slam" as the notes say at the end? Do this at the very end of the tail? Where is the front foot at that point? On the board?
Can I practice an ollie from a standstill?
(Trying to teach my daughter to skateboard, too. So that she can brag that she learned something this summer vacation!)

you should try a better board, chotto. how big is your shoe size (no this isn't a pickup line).

Yes, you can pratice ollies stationary, its problly easier to learn on grass and carpet(so you don't fall). Your front foot should below the front bolts and you shouldn't SLAM the board down but hit it so you hear this crisp sound( if you watch any skateboard video watch how the pros do it and put it in slow motion if possile--this website is very good-->http://www.bobstricktips.com/ , look for ollies on that website).
For ollies i wounldn't put my foot at the very edge of the tail because my ollies would go all crazy but instead i just center it at the tail and remeber to pick up your back foot when ollieing.

but the question is what kind of board do you have?

second the notion to keep your foot in the middle of the tail. unless you're really good or you're setting up a trick you will never put your foot on the very edge. from my experience anyway.

God, I don't know. Standard would (2.5 feet) board with that adhesive tape across the whole thing.

The worse thing that could happen? You're foot slips and you whack yourself between the 'nads? :frown:

I credit carded myself once. It wasn't pretty, ripped that little piece of skin between my scrotum and my butthole. The perinium or something like that.

I was really looking for like what company you ride for but i assume you ride blanks. but anyways you have a size ten shoes so 7.5- 7.75 boards should be good.

I couldn't sit right for days. What kind of board do you ride? I've had this thing for elements because their tail is too sharp and enjoi, but they're really soft. Right now, I've got a Black Label deck and it's solid, but a bit on the heavy side.
8' would be my suggestion, because you'd like the extra width. You can drop by copelands if there are any up there and buy their blanks. The last time I asked the rep, who also skated, their blanks were made by Powell.

as if now i ride flip but they suck cause they have no concave but there durable as hell, however i have another deck waiting in the closet and its a Plan B!!!!!!! can't wait to use that. But i have ridden element and there is something wrong with element to me because i got one of those fiberlights and they snap to easy and the way the tail is i first thought it was a defect but it turns out that its how element boards are so i stay away from element.

Try breaking a leg! I snapped my left leg (both bones) after failing a frontside 50/50 on a halfpipe. Twisted my leg as I came down and then it was just snap and AHHHHHHHHHH!
The next year of rehab sucked big time...

Decks made in China are supposedly weaker than the ones made outta Canadian maple.
As soon as Dwindle announced that they were making their decks in China, warning sirens went off. There is wood from China which is suitably called Chinese Maple. This Chinese maple looks like Canadian maple, but it has more water content and is softer than Canadian wood. Because of this, the wood warps, chips, and goes "flat" more easily, resulting in a much lower quality product.

Dwindle's made up of Blind, Almost, Darkstar, World Industries, and Enjoi. And it's been rumoured that Element's been making their decks in China.
I personally use blanks, 'cause they're much cheaper. Graphics don't matter as much because I can always design/stencil my own. I haven't skated for a few months now... I'm hoping to get back into it soon.

I haven't been back on a board for a couple of years. No one enjoi goes flat faster. Thanks for the headsup.
