A University of Missouri-Kansas City dean's 2003 commencement speech contained wording very similar to another scholar's speech 10 years earlier but failed to acknowledge the other scholar.
Bryan LeBeau, dean of UMKC's College of Arts and Sciences, used passages in his December 2003 commencement speech that essentially were the same as those Cornel West used in a May 1993 commencement speech at Wesleyan University.
UMKC professor Gary Ebersole, who teaches in the College of Arts and Sciences, called LeBeau a “consummate professional” when it comes to his scholarly research and writings in history.
But the situation “should give pause to all of us academics that you have to double check, triple check these things,” said Ebersole, who represents the UMKC faculty on the University of Missouri system's Inter-campus Faculty Council.
Umm ... triple check to make sure you didn't accidently copy entire sections of somebody else's work?
By the way, if anybody has access to the Chronicle of Higher Education, would you post the article here?
