A University of Missouri-Kansas City dean's 2003 commencement speech contained wording very similar to another scholar's speech 10 years earlier but failed to acknowledge the other scholar.

Bryan LeBeau, dean of UMKC's College of Arts and Sciences, used passages in his December 2003 commencement speech that essentially were the same as those Cornel West used in a May 1993 commencement speech at Wesleyan University.

UMKC professor Gary Ebersole, who teaches in the College of Arts and Sciences, called LeBeau a “consummate professional” when it comes to his scholarly research and writings in history.

But the situation “should give pause to all of us academics that you have to double check, triple check these things,” said Ebersole, who represents the UMKC faculty on the University of Missouri system's Inter-campus Faculty Council.

Umm ... triple check to make sure you didn't accidently copy entire sections of somebody else's work?

By the way, if anybody has access to the Chronicle of Higher Education, would you post the article here?

I tried to find the Chronicle article on Lexis, but it doesn't appear to have been cataloged yet.

It's interesting, but universities seem to have double standards when it comes to plagiarism involving students vs. that involving faculty. The situation at Harvard is a good example. It will be interesting to see what happens to LeBeau--he's been quoted as saying he hopes he doesn't lose his job.

It turns out that LeBeau also plagiarized the introduction of his speech from another commencement speaker. Both of the speeches (West's and Baker's) are handily archived at the same site.

By the way, Cornel West should be required reading. I remember the first time I heard him speak (on the radio). He has what some people may refer to as a very "Black" speaking voice (is there a better way to say this?). So I was listening and suddenly the content made me realize it was West. This really challenged my perception of people based on their speech.

I wanted to read a couple of his books. I'm still getting through Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs and Steel" and I'm halfway through "Orientalism". (or was it italicized?)
