Danny Graves, born in Vietnam, was released by the Cincinnati Reds for poor performance and giving the finger to a fan. Unstated was what the fan said to provoke Graves.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=2070999

Reds players let it be known that their distaste for the Danny Graves release started with the fact that he was notified with a phone call, but more important, what set off his gesture was a fan who according to teammates yelled, "go back to Vietnam." That told players that the fans' racist behavior is acceptable.

Unbelievable. I still don't like sports much and I feel that within sports there's an unsettling level of racism. I know Yao wasn't exactly treated fairly when he first came to the NBA.

Quick question, but how does a Vietnamese guy get the last name "Graves", was he an adoptee?

Unbelievable is right.

But isn't this Cinci -- again.

Home of Marge Schott (sp?). What else is new?

Graves is mixed.

However, the fan didn't just say "Go back to Vietnam". At least not according to what I saw on AngryAsianMan ...

Kind of reminds me the Arthur Chi'en firing, but worse.... The Cincinnati Reds let go of eight-year veteran relief pitcher Danny Graves this week, after he cursed at a fan and flipped him off during a game. Graves, who was born in Vietnam, was unceremoniously dumped the next day. Feels like there's been an alarming increase in such fan/player altercations in recent years. Is there good reason for a professional athlete to fly off the handle like that? You better frickin' believe it: Player-fan animosity rears its ugly head in Graves incident. The fan reportedly shouted at Graves, "Go back to Vietnam, you slant-eyed [racial slur and swear words]." None of the news articles actually specify what the "racial slur and swear words" were, but you can probably use your imagination. That's racist!

Thanks Craig, sounds like Graves responded accordingly. I don't think he flipped out, at least he didn't go into the stands and ripped the guy's head off.

graves gets released for standing up for himself.

yao chooses not to respond to shaq's ching chong comments and the NAACP gives shaq an award the same year.

Graves was released for sucking. The finger was just the straw that broke the donkey's back. Professional athletes are supposed to just deal with negative comments from fans, so I don't support what Graves did. However, I totally understand his feelings, and I probably would have done the same thing.

Actually he did respond in a very witty manner that totally made Shaq look like a fool, in contrast. Here's Shaq with the century old "ching chong" joke and Yao parries it by mock-sympathizing with Shaq's difficulty with the Chinese language.

I just love how a conversation about a non chinese, non basketball player automatically gets rerouted into a discussion about Yao Ming.

Well no, not really. Only that every other thread about non Chinese things always get rerouted to a discussion about Chinese stuff on YW...

Someone call the waaaaabulance. Well, it was a comparison, who else can we compare racism to? Maybe you ought to start more threads on the Korean diasporic experience and stop letting ye110man dictate the experience to us.

I would but then people would jump in and talk about how Korea really owes everything to China anyway... and not respond to anything I say but take someone else who isn't Korean's word for it for some reason.

Blah...

Anyway it's not that big of a deal. Especially in this case, where the comparison is appropriate...

But I agree with the large Chinese presence on these forums, I wish more people would contribute from different backgrounds and experiences. I personally don't think that I should put the Korean experience within a Chinese historical context. That really goes against the idea of of what this site is about.

I don't see any problem comparing this incident to Yao Ming's incident or to Arthur Ch'iang's firing. It's all open discussion.

I notice too that there is not a lot of non-chinese participation. Actually there're not many non-chinese members. I also wish to see more non-chinese APIAs' experiences and cultures. Where are you? Come back from your vacation! It seems like there are a number of long-time posters that have been missing.. I miss reading their posts. It's also nice to see new members coming in!

As soon as an athlete reacts with bitterness to a fan's jackass actions, they lose.

I guess there's a special skill to being a public figure and having to deal with jerks.

Rule #1 - don't give them what they want. And what they want is for you to get upset and respond to them.

well, there's a lot of negative racial slurs thrown at the players in sports by fans. a lot of stuff about blacks, etc... now, that asians are starting to get into this field, you're going to see the same stuff thrown at them.

The negative slurs towards blacks are almost non-existent compared to the amount of adulation, money, women, praise, flattery, babying, worship, glorification, etc. that they receive from high school onward.

If Asian athletes get even a small percentage of the over-the-top benefits black athletes get, they will be in heaven.

Even if what you said is true still, double eyelid doesn't make you look caucasian. It has to do with the projecting forehead and upper nosebridge. So if you don't have eyelids but you have lebanese nose then you look more like european/arab/persian.

Are we even sure that the quote of the fan included "slant eyed gook?" All accounts I've read say that all he said was "go back to Vietnam!".

It makes little difference either way, but I've haggled Jorge Julio similarly when he gave up 5 runs to the Devil Rays once.

Well I didn't tell him to get his ass back to Venezuela but my brother and I sarcasticly cheered him on his way back to the dugout, shouting "Yea Julio, you showed em!" and he simply smiled and waved.

Okay so that's not really the same...

Yeah, well jeering is in a completely different league.

For one, I'm surprised they knew that he was half-Vietnamese. At least they're getting their ethnicities straight nowadays. Before, it'd be something like, go back to China cuz all the white people that every Asian person came from China. However, that's little consolation for the shit that we have to put up with on a daily basis and now highlighted in professional sports. Fans can jeer all they want, but once it gets that personal, it's on a whole different level... and asses must be wh00ped.

To be honest, I don't know what slur was used. All reports I've read deleted the slur, quoting the fan saying "Go back to Vietnam, you slant eyed (deleted racial slur)." I gave them the benefit of the doubt and put in gook. It might've been chink or some other anti-Asian slur.
