I'm just taking a stab at the dark and I think the YW is comprised of many APIAs whos parents have gone to college and for the sake of simplicity, this poll will be gender neutral. Which isn't very scientific, but I can't put more than one poll into this thread.

I alos want to know, 1. Who has the higher educational attainment in your family (mother or father). 2. Where they attended college (country) 3. What ethnicity you are. 4. Where you fall on the scale. 5. Have you gone to or are planning to go into higher education.

def.

primary: k-8th grade
secondary: 8-12th grade
college: including post-college/graduate education

I am.

1. Both my parents have gone to college
2. They went to college in Taiwan
3. Taiwanese/Chinese American
4. I fall on the highest level of attainment and
5. I graduated college
.

edit: while I put down APIAs, all you NZ and UK and Canadian APIs can join too.

Q1 and Q2: Parents: met at Berkeley. My mother didn't finish, though.

Paternal grandparents: don't really know much about them. My paternal grandfather graduated university (in the US rather than Germany, but I couldn't tell you where to save my life), don't know about grandmother.

Maternal grandparents: grandpa went to a technical high school in Malaysia, grandma had a diploma from a 2-year normal school in the Philippines.

Q3: Malaysian Chinese.
Q4: What scale?
Q5: BS '03, studying for a Masters' part-time now.

1. Who has the higher educational attainment in your family (mother or father).

Neither. Both my mom and dad have similar education background.

2. Where they attended college (country)

They did not attend college. They went straight into the workforce after graduating from secondary school (i.e. high school) in Hong Kong 'cause they could not afford to attend University.

3. What ethnicity you are.

Chinese Canadian

4. Where you fall on the scale.

Not sure what scale  I graduated from University.

5. Have you gone to or are planning to go into higher education.

Thought about it but not now. Can't accumulate any more student loans, plus getting too old and tired for it.

My mother is a high school graduate and my father received a primary education and then entered an apprenticeship.

I got confused and clicked the wrong one.

Haha, sorry, remove question 4. Also, re: Craig, I'm sorry I think when I meant highest, I mean like if you or your parents have gone to college. I'm clumping college and post-graduate studies together. I know, I'm bad, you know it.

I hope this counts

1. Who has the higher educational attainment in your family (mother or father).

Very much the same - both my parents attended college; mom's student life was lengthier as a medical student (6 years) while dad obtained a higher number of degrees in his field of work (banking). When we moved to the U.A.E. in 1990, dad continued his audit job as an accountant, but mom, who finished her medical finals the month we were born, eventually never became a practising doctor.

2. Where they attended college (country)

Pakistan

3. What ethnicity you are.

Pakistani

4. Where you fall on the scale.

Almost about to finish highschool (2 more years - will be starting 11th grade in Sept. '05), then I look forward to going into University, but I think I still have a long way to go ;_;

5. Have you gone to or are planning to go into higher education.

Plan to attend University in Canada (leaving this summer to finish our final years of highschool)

great poll to get a view of the make-up of asian-am families today.

1. Who has the higher educational attainment in your family (mother or father).

My dad. He has a degree from Cal and a year into his masters in mathematics. Then I was conceived before he could finish and ruined all of his plans. *evil laughter* Sorry, dad.

2. Where they attended college (country)

My dad went to Cal Berkeley and my mom went to Chabot (I think), a junior college.

3. What ethnicity you are.

Chinese-American

4. Where you fall on the scale.

I have my JD. When I retire, I want to get my PhD in philosophy. If you're asking if I'm smarter than my dad, though, the answer is no. My mom is more clever than smart, and she is definitely more clever than me and my dad put together.

5. Have you gone to or are planning to go into higher education.

See above.

I just wanted to add that when I put down families I assumed that there would be a mother and father figure. I wanted to apologize to people who's families aren't structured in the traditional way, that was shortsighted on my part. So, answer accordingly.

i'm actually surprised so many people here have parents with college educations. my parents both just have secondary educations. and my father barely graduated. he got kicked out of 3 different secondary schools because he was such a bad kid.

Why would get go for a B.B.A. in M.I.S. if you already have a BSCS ?

Because the CS dept. at UH sucks ass. No support in finding jobs, wasn't any student organization, no networking, no relationships with employers. The business school and the M.I.S. dept in particular is very strong in those areas and I've taken advantage of them. I know many CS alumni that are still looking for a job but I know scores of M.I.S. alumni that work for top companies. I also think an MIS related carrer is more interesting.
