Also wondered why the Chinese soccer team is an utter disgrace whilst it's basketball team is nearly unbeatable in the Asian league.

OK, they have a huge population, but it's rather illogical to suggest they can't find a few decent soccer players from a 700 million or so men (their women soccer team is good though). Sure bball depends a lot on height and other Asian nations with a fraction of the population cannot field a taller team than China, but again, China is near hopeless in soccer.

What's more is that their is a rather (or use to be) strong soccer league but the CBA is rather weak. I haven't been to China lately but what is the number one "Western" sport over there? Soccer or Basketball?

I know in Japan and South Korea, soccer is one of the top ones along with Baseball.

In bball. there is Yao, Wang, Bateer as well and potentially a host of other names but in soccer they only have a few playing in European leagues. and that Li Tie is F***ing shit, he's only in the british league thanks to his baby face looks and freggin Chinese sponsorship.

I think one of the reasons for chinese soccer being hopeless is the player/coaches have very little chemistry together.

basketball being less of a team/strategy sport and more of an individual skills sport, require less team coordination.

Well derrr..I did metion "Western" sports in the context of sports that most Western nations have a strong interest or heavily engage in.

You can list a whole heap of other sports before Basketball or soccer in terms of popularity in China.

well china is pretty good at gymnastics, and it's a western sport [modern gymnastic originated in northern europe].

also, ping pong is one of the most popular sport in vikingland sweden.

go figure

Well these sports lack the exposure and prize money to attract top talent from the USA or other large Western nations.

It's also rather weird how the Northern Europeans (notably the Scandanavian countries - Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark) play sports popular in Asia - table tennis, badminton and to a lesser degree - Squash. It's probably because there isn't many sports that can be played in a country thats so close to the artic.

basketball is definitely the hot sport in China now. You see Yao Ming plastered everywhere. I was watching CCTV and they had a special on Bateer.

I hope China's next generation grows up on Basketball and produces 20 Yao Mings.

Soccer fans went down hill after CPC killed everyone's spirits by saying don't get too excited about our team, etc etc. What kind of shit is that...
