Just browsing through these threads and it seems like everyone here only listens to white music! I saw a few Korean bands/singers I recognized, 2 Japanese ones, and not a single Chinese/Taiwanese one!!!

What's up with that?

Oh, no way... i mean, i do listen to american music.. but i MOSTLY listen to Asian music... Korean Music all the way!!! I'm actually listening to Jo Sung Mo at the moment... RehTehEhGang....

As for Chinese/Taiwanese and Japanese music.. i'm not too familiar with them tho...

i kinda like old mainland music better than all this HK and J and K pop. I mean seriously some of this new music is either TOO wannabe hip hoppy, or it's TOO sappy. I kinda like folk-ish kinds of songs, like this Chinese song about Chairman Mao, or like songs about comrades working and stuff like that.

although there are some sappy songs i like, too. but usuaully i just hear them off tv or fr parents, so i dont really remember artist names that much.

But most of the music i listen to is English cuz i like to know what i'm listening to and as Uncle Tat knows, my Mandarin sucks and my Cantonese is non-existent, so I don't understand Chinese songs that much, let along j or k pop. That's proly why I prefer like maybe early 90s or earlier Mainland songs to HK pop and stuff, cuz i at least KINDA understand Mandarin.

Asian music suddenly got very popular in the Bay Area among the ABC crowd back near the early and mid-90's. It was "in" even though many people had no idea what the subject matter was. That fad is dead around here now. There are plenty of people who listen to Asian music in the Bay Area though. There is a big time melting pot here.

Oh yeah. There is a buttload of places in San Francisco that sell Asian music and media. You can buy Asian music as well as DVD's with Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat, and others. The quality is usually not great because they don't compare to those big buck American studios where they spend a lot of time remastering the picture and making the sound perfect.

but i think its cheaper buying music off the internet.. rather than going to a store to buy asian music... at least thats from my experience... like from the web i can purchase a Korean CD for like 9$ rather than for 16$...

but than again... i usually download my music in the first place... but anyways, i dont understand the words to Korean music... and listening to it is not a fad for me... altho i admit at first i thought it was just going to be a passing phase... but 2 years later... i'm still listening to korean music..

... white... music.....

I don't import music. Sorry. I really have very little opportunity to be exposed to imported music...

I'm unfamiliar with "white music," however.

Uncle Tat

white music = music made by white people

I didn't think I was speaking in some cryptic language that people didn't understand...

Ah yes Korean music. The only thing I hate about the RECENT trend in Asian music is that they've all started adding lame English lyrics or worse English "rap" into it. Korean music is probably the most notorious for this, especially the music by girl artists/bands, although Chinese music is well on its way to oblivion as well. Japanese music...well it's always been white-washed, with the exception of that Ayumi Hamasaki girl.

I much prefer the late 80s to mid 90s stuff, before it became "cool to be white" in Asia. Eesh.

are you kidding? chinese music is about the only thing i listen to nowadays. that and certain japanese musicians and groups. even the "new rock" type stuff like cibo matto and buffalo daughter, they're japanese.

it's just that i don't talk about it because kasie would be about the only one around here who knows what i'm talking about.

actually the country music market is way way way bigger than the hip hop market. the hip hop market is actually quite small compared to other kinds of music.

I hardly listen to any Asian music. Some Japanese pop, hip-hop and traditional music, but that's about it.

Unless you count Middle Eastern or Hindi-pop to be Asian, but I don't.

I love asian music
I probally listen to these mainly since my fave music was back in the days where Boyz II Men had great songs, nowadays their latest album really isnt very good and my fave genre rnb dont have much songs i like.
As this was the reason i switched, to the asian pop culture.
The few lame english words is probally why i like Korean music (cuz i dont speak a word of korean)
I like Japanese and Chinese(mainly Taiwanese) too

Who do you listen to SunWuKung?

I'm assuming by "Chinese music" you mean Hong Kong and Taiwanese music. I'll admit my mainland China music knowledge is pretty limited.

Please tell me you don't listen to Twins or I'll have to shoot you :)

hahhahhah shoot me now!

actually i resisted successfully for a long time. i mean i was living in HK and their pictures were literally plastered everywhere. but then during chinese new year their new year video was played on the big screen at Sogo at Causeway Bay. and well, they are absolutely irresistible in their videos. resistance was futile for me. i gave in. :D

but my favorite singer is Faye. i also got into some indie stuff in HK, like the Pancakes, YLK Organization, Dzap Dau Dau.

I don't know if you're old enough to remember this old group called Tai Chi. They were a pseudo-rock type group in Hong Kong and were REALLY huge in the mid 80s to the early 90s. I think they were called Trinity or something before they merged with some other group. The only member I remember was Joey Tang though, the guitarist.

Anyway...know any place where I can get their mp3s? haha...

oh...and *BANG*

yeah with the exception of the LMF crew, everybody who tries to do hip hop in cantonese are just really trying to use it as a gimmick to make a hit, and they have no idea what they're doing and everything comes off sounding cheesy.

but you know, people don't really care about hip hop in HK. so there's not much of a market for it.

ah, it takes a little effort, or living in asia, to sift throw all the bad asian music to get to the good asian music.

same goes for the states, i guess.

if you like japanese musicians, try Shiina Ringo. she is excellent.

but don't worry, shiina ringo is nothing like puffy. she's very very talented. alot of her music has a rock sound to it. she can sing in japanese, english, french, spanish, and german. and man, there are very few women who can look as cool as she does with a guitar in her hands.

well, pedophilia means being attracted to prepubescent girls.

but since i've been thinking of how hot some underage girls are in anime, who are drawn w/ err pretty young faces, i may have to admit i probably do have pedophilic tendencies. :(

Wow you're kidding right?

I thought Vivian Chow's voice was really nice and soothing. Her songs weren't bad either. Actually some of her songs were really good.

Oh ya and she was cute haha :)
Ok to be fair to Vivian. She definitely not as talented as a faye, sammy or kelly.

I don't know Tat, I didn;t find her music that appealing. But oh man she was a hotty, though.

Yeah I definetly like Sammi more and of course everyone loves Faye, but Vivian had some good songs too.

By Kelly do you mean Kelly Chen? I dunno...some of her "classical" sounding songs are nice, but overall I don't think she's that great of a singer. She is a hottie though and that's a huge pre-requisite for Asian music stars...unlike in the West where you can be fugly and still make it relatively well.

see, i think kelly has a rocking body, but i don't think she's very pretty. and she's especially ugly when she smiles.

I like Sammi the best out of Kelly, Faye and Vivian, in the looks department.

Hmm... aside from Vivian Chow, there is a couple of J-Rock bands out there. I really like The Brilliant Green. They do sing a couple of songs in english, but give them a break, it's catchy and fun. I also like ELT. Their new song that they have on Inu Yasha is pretty cool.

Oh well, any music is pretty damn cool if you like it. I personally like Sixpence None The Richer, but I really hate that one song "kiss me". It's been overplayed. Grr. Although the japanese version of "kiss me" is interesting to listen. Woo!!!

I'm trying to find a site where I can download the Mina video Answer the phone. I can find it on solid07 but even though I have adsl it still runs real slow, Where would be the best sites to download music videos.

I've been to some sites like soompi and popcornfor2 but they don't seem to have it. :frown:

i used to not listen to any asian music until just recently. since i'm korean, i tend to lean more towards kpop (especially hip-hop), since i can understand that better, but i also like utada hikaru and coco lee (although i don't know if she really counts as asian music). :P

dj qbert is pretty sweet too.

anyways, i tried to listen to chinese music. and if LISTENING is the key word, then i still do. but i WATCH kpop vids a whole lot more than i listen to chinese music. there's just no eye candy in chinese music. and the videos sux.

if boa's not legal, then i might have pedophilic tendancies too :P . but she should be by now right? of course there's always eugene, hyolee, and kim ez. man... if there was ever a case for the wonders of plastic surgery, those girls are it. they should make it like social security and give it to any girls that are deemed to need it. :D j/k j/k ...err kinda

skratching is cool, but not all of it is good. some of it, naturally, can be downright annoying. kid koala has some interesting stuff. I haven't listened to any of the Pikls or Qbert's stuff really. I'll get around to it I guess. And rather than listing fav hip-hop artists and such, just visit my page hehe.

right now, i'm in a j-pop phase. listening to Dreams Come True, Shimano Momoe, m-flo, Lisa (the vocalist for m-flo), Misia, and Utada Hikaru. I haven't got into the other big names yet, running out of HD space <_< and money to purchase these expensive import CDs.

ah, well. maybe you just don't like her music then. she is not the typical j-pop.

i love her. she's got a great voice and singing style. and she looks hot with a guitar in her hands.

korean hip-hop is actually pretty good. but then again, i'm thinking of the artists who were born in the US and then went to korea because they weren't going to get any breaks here. i.e tashanna, drunken tiger

although, i will admit that tashanna had fame in the group uptown, and drunken tiger has been around for some time now, so neither of them are newcomers.

I listen to Japanese music mostly, some Korean, some Chinese. Let's see... for pop I like Ayumi Hamasaki, Aikawa Nanase, etc. For rock I like Dir En Grey, Malice Mizer, X-Japan, etc. For punk I like Mongol 800, Swoosh, etc. (Although their English lyrics SUCK). Probably my favorite song right now is 'Chiisana Koi no Uta' by Mongol 800. It's one of their songs that is actually all in Japanese.... ugh, I'll never forget the lyrics to one of their songs.

I love you...
smack your forehead!
I want to go with you
for everything!
I think this is not popular song!
Star light star bright
first star I see tonight
I wish I may I wish I might
have this wish I wish tonight.
Please marry me (said as pwease mawwy me)
will you marry me...

WTF is that about?

What do you guys think of Utada Hikaru? I know her music might not be what you consider "Asian" music, but I am totally into right now.
