I was dining in a restaurant earlier tonight. I was eating by myself at the bar (it would have been nice if I had a female companion, but such was not my luck...), and I eventually got up to go to the rest room. On my way there, a hapa-ish-looking waiter made a semi-cantankerous comment in my direction. I was a little annoyed at this...
On my way out of the rest room, I said to him: "Can I ask you what your mother's maiden name was?"
I don't remember exactly what his reply to me was, but in so many word, he said: How do you know it was my mother who was the Asian and not my father?
I said to him: "If I were to answer that question, we'd be here all night.
It later turned out that his father's name is Smith.
[As a side note: Chen + Smith = Isn't that the American story in a nutshell???]
Any comments?

His parentage was a case of WM/AF, not AM/WF... How did I know that? Because its the combo that's usually reinforced in mainstream American culture.
and what exactly did he say to you when you were on your way to the bathroom?
I can't remember :retard:

he would be there all night because he would be explaining to the person why hapas tend to have white fathers and asian mothers. Reasons dive into the military, imperialism, and the beautification of Asian women over asian guys.

Please tell me that your response wasn't an effort to insult the guy... you don't really seem the type to indulge in that sort of thing, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
But if you were trying to insult him by saying his mom was a 'sell-out' or something like that, you and I are going to have problems. And what exactly did the guy say? You can't remember, but it bothered you enough to go out of your way to say something to him and post about it?
I better stop here because I'm getting worked up. Gotta mod, gotta mod, gotta mod... must be impartial, must be impartial...

Not to mention the fact that white men are generally more willing to ingage in some interracial dating than Asian men are.

No, I wasn't trying to insult him. I was just curious. And I'm sure the only reason I asked in the first place was because I had so much wine to drink. I've seen this guy working there many times before, and I never brought it up. But you're right: he might have been offended by the question. So, the next time I see him, I'll ask if I ticked him off and apologize if that's appropriate.
I don't make judgements about other people's relationships. I give them the benefit of the doubt (a popular phrase). Even if there's something about a particualr relationship that I might not approve of, I don't go sticking my nose into other people's private lives. So, in no way was my question intended to insult him.
And now that I think of it, posting the story on this site was probably a stupid idea.
Finally, I'm glad you think I'm not the type to go around insulting people. If you did think that I got my kicks by antagonizing others, I'd be worried about how I'm coming across on this message board.
