Technically, my first job was at the age of 7 taking orders for customers at my parent's fast food joint. Yes, I'm a chopsuey princess. Get over it. :D
At the age of 17, my first paying job was at the Gap when it was both men and women's. I worked there for about a year and a half. How about all of you?

my first job was grading stuff for a korean prep company, which I quit after one day cuz i wanted to "study harder" in first semester senior yr of hs. Wll, the studying didnt happen and i never got a chance to work at that academy again.

my second job was an internship in the city gov't which my dad's friend hooked me up w/. This is my first full-time work. I only worked there for 6 weeks before i quit (i was the FIRsT intern to quit) so i could 'study for the GRE" but i actually just spent most of my time watching porn and cartoons. that was proly my most fun job cuz we didn't have a lot of work, and it was a fairly relaxed time in that particular part of the dept, so we interns just chilled a lot or talked to the workers. :)

My current job is as a lackey, and it's kinda cool cuz i get to work from home. This ismy first full-time non-intern job so it's also kinda my first job.

My first job was doing some data entry for a friend of my dad who had an internet store.

My first real job with a paycheck that wasn't under the table was at a coffee shop. :) It was a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I worked there for like a year.

my first job was as a data entry/receptionist and later cashier for a high-end shoe company my mom worked for. I don't think I got paid.

I've worked too many jobs since then. Right now I'm a freelance webdesigner and I work as a computer lab operator at the library. (paid to sit on my ass and write emails!)

Waited tables at a horrifically bad Chinese restaurant the sumemr before I went off to college. Then worked at RadioShack (yes, you can build many illegal devices using only parts bought from the back of a RadioShack) to pay my way through college. Then worked as a legal assistant in a law firm (yes! a desk job!) Now in law school, so the next job will be as an attorney. Moving on up in the world.

I really do have a lot of respect for people who work modest jobs but are often looked down upon (e.g. janitorial, trash collectors, etc....)

I personally wouldn't go that route for a job, but they do what they have to do to survive instead of turning to drug dealing and what not. I also think they're under paid.

Btw, after the GAP, I worked as a tutor for elementary children in one of the inner city schools in St. Louis. I was a tutor for the Latchkey Program during their summer school session. Latchkey, if you don't know, means children who are at-risk because they come home after school without a parent or guardian supervising them. Anyway, after that, I was a hostess at Applebees! I HATED it with a passion. I quit within 3 months. The people (my boss, the waiters/waitresses) were horrible! Tips were great but the hourly rate of 2.15/hr was a scandal. Hmm... then, I interned for ABC here in St. Louis, which also housed 3 radio stations. It was cool to meet the people who deliver the news there, walk around the studios, and see the DJs I usually hear on the radio, but it was friggin unpaid. I got a lot of experience in network administration there though. After THAT, I worked at my psychology department and hated it mainly b/c of my boss. And now, I technically have 3 jobs that appear to be 2. Right now, for those of you who are newbies, I'm a support staff for a teen suicide hotline supervising the teen crisis workers who actually answer the calls...not me. I just help them out if they freeze up. =) I love it b/c we don't get too many calls. So technically, i get paid for studying, watching movies, and sitting on my toosh. My second job is a behavioral therapist for children with autism.

Once college hit, I did a lot of work as a programmer and/or network administrator. Still there, actually, though I dont want to do that anymore...

at age 15 (3 months short of 16), i worked at my mom's cousin's japanese grocery store. i got to work with my cousins and friends so i loved it. we pretty much were responsible for helping customers find items, doing cashier/bagging stuff and just helping out customers to their cars. service in english and japanese. worked there for a year and a half.

our customers were the best. since the store is the biggest in the general area where i live, the customers were really loyal. i liked the personal relationships you'd develop. loved the little kiddies. they were the cutest. they'd call me "oneichan." you know-- jie, unnie. hah.

there was this one customer who came from the east bay to buy a particular mochi for his wife. i thought it was the cutest thing ever. he was confined to a motorized wheelchair because i don't think his feet could support his weight, but that's not the point. hehe. one time i helped him out to his car all the way on the other side of the block, and i swear i was gone for about an hour. he was telling me about his son. haha. when i went back into the store, they were like "we thought you got kidnapped so we sent shu (my cousin) to go look for you."

First job was as security guard for Reinhart industry. I was 19 when I had this job..Pretty cool. I sat at a desk and viewed 4 monitors. I worked from 12am-6am (M&W).....My first class was at 9:10, so it worked out perfectly. During work, I usually did my homework and study. basically I was getting paid to study. Sure I had to make a couple of rounds, but it didn't take more than 20 minutes.

Anyway, I lasted 1 year, before I quit........I just didn't want to work anymore--a personal decision.

Paid was $5.25/hr.............

I have a thing for NY and a thing for reading encyclopedias (when I'm bored). =X I just recognized the name. I sorta studied the map because I wanted to know if there were any schools that I could potentially go to, and their location in comparison to NYC.

I wouldn't say that it's paradise here, but it's definitely very different from NYC. In my experience also, students move out to the east coast for college, and after they're done, they move back to where they started. I guess it's a good thing for their families, but business wise, there're a few drawbacks. I'm sure you do a fair amount of networking and whatnot while you're still in college so that after you graduate, you sort of have some place to start. When you move away from that, you have to start over again from zero.

I think many students don't care to leave California because they have no need to. We've got the UC's (all first tier, except Santa Cruz and Riverside) where you can go to school annually for give or take $20,000. Usually kids who are from southern CA move up north, and vice versa. You're far enough from your parents that you don't have to worry about them visiting all the time, but you're close enough that if you need to get home for whatever reason, it's a 6-7 hour drive or 1 hour flight.

Later, I worked in different restaurants and supermarkets and then got an office job a little after I started college. It was an IT recruiting office with all women staff. This is where I discovered the differences between a girl and a woman. :)

After that was a series of summer internship w/ the state of texas and part-time at Benihana during school semester till I graduated from college.

My first job was a cashier/mop-boy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison dorm cafeteria ("Pop's Club," for those who know..). But that by far wasn't my worst job.

My worst job ever was making 5.25/hr one summer in southern Minnesota working as a clerk at Texaco. Ever seen Clerks?? Yeah that was me. I was the only person there during the closing shift and I had to do everything, including paperwork, mopping up the store, facing the shelves, stocking the cooler, taking out the trash, cleaning the cappacino machines, and finally cleaning up mass amounts of POOP left by truckers and children who couldn't (or simply didn't want to) aim for the toilet. Let's just say Pine sol was my best friend.

Feces is so not fun.

LOl such a good topic, I had a real estate paper route (sometimes me and my little sister would dump some of them down the storm drains...there was so many and I was little!), dishwasher = sucked
linecook = ok, but tiring
laborer for my dad = ok, but tiring not as fun as previous
retail sales for Club Monaco = decent clothes flirted with girls
freelance designer = good but not steady
video game tester = FUN and chill, probably the best non-career job out there.
now: interface designer for a video game company = not too bad, still not paid enough.

interestingly enough i found the most interesting people that i worked with were the people who had 'middle' like jobs, decent jobs but not career ones. In turn, never judge a person by what they do, sometimes a job does not define a person.

The first thing I was paid for was babysitting.

I was around seven.

I was great with babies, helped out with children before, understood a little Spanish, knew CPR, and the kid's parents' were desperate. They couldn't find their regular babysitter.

I got $10 an hour, I think. It was for one kid. A cute baby.

I'm not sure if that counts, though. It was only one day.

A few years later I started babysitting during summers.

Dipping ice cream at the mall at age 15. My boss was a cool Korean guy who gave me a raise after a few weeks. He thought I was doing such a good job. My coworker asked me if I got a raise and because I am a very honest person who have a hard time lying, I told her the truth. Her sister was the manager at the time and flipped out when she heard about my raise bc it had been a couple of months since she received a raise. Now I know better...never tell people you got a raise.

Helping out my dad at the restaurant where they hadn't hired a bus boy or dishwasher yet because they had just opened. My dad is a chef and so I was bus boy and dishwasher. I don't think the waiters ever figured out we were father & son.
After they got properly staffed I moved on to a job at an auto parts warehouse loading/unloading trucks. I hate leaky car batteries.
