somebody brought up the point that they view churches mainly as a focal point to socialize for a lot of koreans.

this brings up an interesting point if that's what my education in the chinese language when i was little was really all about instead.

i don't see how one can really learn a language by sitting in a classroom a couple of hours every saturday. especially, when i played ayso soccer, and would miss some of those classes to go to a game.

the funny thing is that there was another chinese school, that had their classes on sunday. but, my parents didn't want me to go to that since it was further away.

the more i think about it, it was all about my parents to meet other chinese parents. and, i'm angry. why make me miss saturday morning cartoons for that.

if it was really about learning chinese, the best way would have been to just rent some really interesting and cool chinese tv shows and movies with english subtitles. and, i woulld have learned more about how to speak and understand chinese.

after watching enough where i could understand chinese, you then swithc over to chines movies with only chinese writing underneath so i would pick out how to read chinese at that point.

because they did the best they knew how and that was part of preparing you for adulthood from their perspective.

Chinese school in Oakland is Mon to Fri after school or Saturday school for a few hours.
There are also a few Chinese churches that offer chinese language education.
Most who has taken K-6 Chinese can read a Cantonese newspaper. So basically, if you went from K-6, by middle school you are a certified fob. Grades: 7-8 you can learn Mandarin.

My high school, Oakland Senior High offers Cantonese courses. Oakland's Laney offers Mandarin. College of Alameda offers Cantonese and Vietnamese. San Leandro's Chinese Christian School (CCS) offers Mandarin. and I bet S.F offers plenty.

Going to Chinese school isn't just learning the language. You read Chinese poetry and novels and essays. You learn Chinese history.

Recongizing Chinese characters by watching chinese movies is different when you are trying to write them.
