You Are Beautiful (http://www.you-are-beautiful.com)
The intention behind this project is to reach beyond ourselves as individuals to make a difference by creating moments of positive self realization in those who happen across the statement: You Are Beautiful.

Ok so I'm gonna risk being the bad guy here. Is this to instil pride and self esteem in people? If so I realy don't agree with this.
Not all people are beautiful, that is a fact, we measure anything by it's opposite if all people are beautiful then beauty doesn't exist. I think people should look to other sources for pride other than "beauty". Feeling "beautiful" is rather fragile. What happens to your "self realization" when the rest of the world tells you you're not.

Can't beauty be seen as a perspective thing?

That's all good and well, but than again so can everything else. Like whose to say who is or isn't smart if it's just a perspective thing.

It is. You can have all the brains in the world, but put yer ass in the ghetto and being 'smart' takes on a whole different meaning. Now if we're talking about high IQ's, at least we're dealing with numbers. But there are some people I know who scored high and yet you meet them and you'd think, 'this guy is a complete fuckin moron who doesn't know shit.' Go figure.

O_O ohh man i contradict my brains,
i decided it's not a good idea to go through this after i wrote it :redface:
you draw a really great point by saying that we would no longer uphold the significance of beauty if everyone was termed "beautiful". although this is very true, i would like to contradict it to some degree - because, at the same time, i feel that we don't put enough emphasis on 'beauty' in today's world. with an ever-growing attachment to materialism, high expectations of the people and the atmosphere that surrounds us etc. everyone needs a dose of feel-good, and with all reason. beauty has almost been moulded into a word that cannot apply to anyone but people of supermodel stature.
if you look it realistically, applying it today's situations, there's nothing that can uphold superficial beliefs as these, but it probably helps exemplify our "humanity" ;D and that's the best reason i can give for this project.
to expand the idea of beauty a little further;
i feel beauty can have a variety of connotations. i'm guessing that you are beautiful and similar projects want to twist perfectionist views of what beauty is and what it isn't - and trying to grasp what "beauty" stands for when it is not applied to one medium.
beauty seems to be a very confined term. people are/were never comfortable with using the word unless their reason or usage was incredibly strong and justified. it was never allowed to expand because people have always felt that nothing is "good enough" to be labelled beautiful; a reflection of what today's world is like in how it views character, physical attributes - applying them to perfectionism.
you are beautiful may not have primarily aimed to instill self-esteem but rather, shown the importance of having it. it's perhaps, showing the importance of seeing beauty in places, in things. when making a statement "you are beautiful" you could refer to the pencil you're writing with, or the table you are pasting that sticker on. it could be the people you love or the person who smiled at you while you walked past them that morning.

I never meant to discourage anyone, I agree it is positive, I just thought I'd give another perspective.

A lava lamp and a pitcher of margarita will do the same thing, y'know... :tongue:
I agree, though. It's very nice to watch.
