Counting Hapas, schools in the State of Hawaii are roughly 75% Asian.

i believe it. i remember looking through the demographics info when i was applying to college. But is the category "Asian" or "Asian or Pacific Islander" - are they including Pacific Islanders under the Asian umbrella?

I think they also include Pacific Islander. From my experience, a huge percentage of Hawaiians have Asian blood themselves, so it would be easier just to include the two.

I know UC Irvine is like more than half Asian, interesting how it's so different from the East Coast.

I don't understnd why this statistic is startling?

Native Hawaiians are Pacific Islanders. The islands used to be 100% API if you want to put it that way. The more startling statistic is that the student population is as high as 25% non-API.

seriously.....Hawaii is in the middle of the pacific ocean, very close to asia, with a century of asian immigration [mostly from Japan and southern china].

In fact, Japanese Americans pretty much run the show in Hawaii.

Here's the breakout of ethnic origins of Hawaii's population generally from the Decennial Census for 2000 (http://tinyurl.com/6xp7p).

I didn't click on the link, but if you're talking about the usage of the term "Native Hawaiian" as an ethnicity vs the term "Native Hawaiian" as an identity, we're not having any of it in this thread. We've had this discussion before in the Rant Room. Feel free to dig it up there.

Any more talk of this will be deleted.

Being from Hawaii myself, this stat wasn't too startling lol. But to an outsider, it probably would be, especially with the media image of Hawaii not really being too API.

if you see any TV/movies about hawaii, you'd think it's 100% blond surfers.
