Dealing with stupid telemarketers in English isn't enough? I gotta get those damn Chinese ones too? Not just telemarketers but the stupid Chinese congressman and his little begathon flyer promising to promote Asian American issues. BS, the guy doesn't do jack in public for fear of scaring his much larger white constituency.

The first call I got in Mandarin and I actually started speaking back, which was stupid. The second one I listened to the guy in Mandarin and responded to his question in English - still stupid. The last one I just said "I only speak English" and the pushy bitch just switched to English and kept trying to force me to join some screwy long distance program.

Next time I'm going to tell them that I'm not Chinese. That ought to take care of it. Heh, maybe I should just start asking questions about Chinese, or tell her how much I love sweet and sour and Crouching Tiger.

I just tell them: "wo ba gan ma bu zai jia. wo mei yo sze ba suai" when they call my crib :D

Dang, I wish I had the program that lets you type in Chinese. Nevermind prolly don't even know how to use it.

HH, the obvious course of action here would be for you to start speaking Japanese. :)

or just put the phone down (not hang it up) and let the telemarketer speak to nobody for a really really long time.

you just pinyin the word and it'll bring up a list of words for you to choose. actually it's not a bad way to actually learn pinyin. the same program actually has japanese and korean input methods. you can type korean emails to your girl. :)

Wait does the pinying spelling have to be exact. I had zippo experience in pinyin, reading and writing isn't a problem. Does it mean I have to search thru alot of Chinese characters because my pinyin suxors?

well it starts listing words as soon as you type in one letter, and then narrows your choices as you input more letters. the more common words will be shown first. but if you're looking for lesser used words, you'll have to sift through a number of other words to get to them.

*sigh* it's times like these i wish chinese was phonetic. but then of course it would lose so much of it's character - no pun intended.

Oh no, I think they need to hear how much I love dim sum. And how pretty my jade bracelet and pearls are... and Jacky Chan is so funny... and pu-pu platters are yummy... and I love boba...

How about I just say "Oh my god, your English is soooooo good! Are you Chinese? Wow, my husband is Chinese! I can even speak some Mandarin... Wo shi mei guo ren, ((you must imagine this with a really thick, tongue curling accent)) isn't that cool? My husband's name is Chung Lin, isn't that so exotic? I have a Chinese name too..."

They must feel my wrath for calling my unpublished, no-call list number. I'm just tired of not wanting to answer my phone for fear of being subjected to a pushy salesperson. I know they have to do their jobs, but damn. Omaha Steaks called me on Saturday freakin' morning. Can you believe that? I guess in general I'm tired of the telemarketing. English, Chinese or otherwise.

actually i installed chinese (as well as a slew of other asian languages) input methods and viewing when i installed the OS on my machine. but for the life of me, i can't figure out how to turn on the pinyin input method, and i don't know how to use any other kinds of chinese input method. so i'm reduced to having to use NJStar. :(

but i guess it's no biggy. it's a good program and it's free.

i think under traditional chinese windows, the only phonetic input it offers as standard is zhuyin. i used to use this hakka pinyin input method i downloaded off the net. but now it doesn't work with winXP. so i'm also reduced to using njstar and cantonese pinyin, until my cangjie gets up to speed (i'm still at the "hunt, peck, hunt again, and check the dictionary" stage and getting like 5 words a minute).

telemarketers? i just hit on them. especially the political ones.

To get back on topic, I also find it annoying that a lot of so-called "leaders (http://modelminority.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=48)" and "spokespersons (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0892563524/ref=pd_sim_books_1/002-4201754-4056063?v=glance)" of the Asian American community focus their efforts on teaching U.S. businesses how to "penetrate (http://www.uspaacc.net/diversity_seminar.html)" the Asian and Asian American market. It almost sounds like an invitation to rape.

Just to connect this to the initial posting... part of the reason that I find sales calls to our house in Mandarin annoying is that it inevitably means that some consultant out there is making big money selling my phone number as part of a "package designed to enable Fortune 500 companies to penetrate the fast-growing Asian American market" or somesuch. Blecch. :(

Well now that you mention that, I'm reminded of all the marketing crap my in-laws get too. A good chunk of them are outright scams, usually long distance scams. I feel like they prey on first gens, figuring they can just slam them with mysterious charges and assume they can't read English enough to know they're being screwed.

My MIL was lured into some call she got about int'l long distance rates - she trusted the call because it was in Mandarin. Then we got hit with hundreds of dollars in 'fees' - I took care of it after calling BBB and A.G.'s office but what a pain.

I'd like to think they weren't specifically targeted for a scam - but you never know.

I guess I'm referring to a couple of news shows I've watched where the scammers/telemarketers target older people and immigrants.

Some of these calls can be avoided by hanging up before they have time to pick up their set. I've hung up on telemarketers dozens of times this way. I answer by saying hello right away and if the other side is still quiet, I hang up. If it's someone that actually knows you, they will probably call back if it's important or call your cel phone. With the "hang up method," you don't have to listen to their sales pitch and you don't dash their hopes by saying no no no after they waste your time. It's better for both parties. I tell the ones that get through to remove me from their list.

Oh, by the way, if you hang up during the period where you don't hear anything, they have no idea you hung up on them because they have not switched over to "answer" your circuit.

I was not suggesting you hang up in their face.

Hmm but how can you be sure it's a telemarketer?

but whatever. I think the BEST would be like that scene in Boiler Room, where this stock broker GRILLS a Daily News saleserson on the phone. First he listens to the bs, then he goes "You call that a sales pitch?" starts grilling him on how he should make a better effort, makes him go through a whole different pitch, tells him it's pretty good, and then when the salesman asks if he wants the Daily News, he just goes, "No, I get the Times" and hangs up. :D

People will usually answer by saying something so there is no dead silence. Sometimes the the salespeople on the other end do not answer for 2-4 seconds. After this started happening a lot, I realized they a machine was queuing the calls and the salespeople are switching over to the line you are on when they get a signal. I have not had to talk to a telemarketer for months and I don't have to hang up in their face either.
