For example... "long in the tooth". Does that just come from saying someone is old because their teeth have had a lot of time to grow? :rolleyes:

It comes from the days before oral hygiene. As people got older, their gums would begin to recede, exposing more and more of the root, thereby making their teeth appear longer.
