it was good as a children's movie. but as usual, disney threw historical and cultural accuracy out the window. no biggy though, it was only a children's movie.

Wasn't it based on some old Chinese story or something? I don't know anybody who thought it was offensive. Most Asian people I know loved the fact that Disney made an Asian hero.

by the way this thread should probably be moved to the movies board.

If I had a little girl I'd probably buy it for her. And of course, Snow White also. And Cinderella and all those other evil movies we're not supposed to give to our little girls because it will socialize them to have bad images regarding their looks and gender.
Hell, maybe I'll give her some Barbies too.

ever read the original Grimm Brothers' versions of Snow White and Cinderella? Not as bloody as hyped but still pretty worthwhile violence. Nice bit of poetic justice in each, which i feel is SORELY lacking in the Dsneyfied Cinderella.
I REALLY like Snow White's ending; Cinderella's leaves me slightly unsatisfied but it's the BIGGEST contrast to its Disney version.

Never saw Mulan so I can't really comment on it, although I'm usually pretty lenient toward cartoons. so i'd proly be at least mildly entertained. I mean south park makes a lot of jokes about Chinese or Japanese people and I still luuuv the show.
Maxine Hong Kingston's Woman Warrior is also loosely based on the Hua (or Fa) Mulan legend, and Frank Chin gave her mad shit about how she's self-exoticizing her ppl or something.
Guess Mulan just never gets a break in America, cuz some Asian American dude is always gonna hammer away at her.
...
oops, that last sentence did NOT sound right. For once, I wasn't thinking what you're gonna accuse me of thinking. :P

I'm serious about giving my daugher the movies and Barbies. Plus, an EZ-Bake Oven. That and a little picnic basket/tea set. Oh man, if we have a daughter she's gonna make Daddy her li'l biatch.
About the fairy tales. Hell, yeah I love the original ones. Even the modern version, break those down into symbolism. Beauty and the Beast? Riiiiiigggghht.

The only thing I am going to buy my daughter if I ever have children is the supa dupa deluxe chastity belt, a lock and key to her room. And throw away both keys.

the thing about Hua Mulan is that she is actually supposed to portray an ideal in traditional chinese feminine qualities - which is that of an obedient daughter/wife that is very pious. but contemporary american media would put her in the opposite position of a woman rebelling against a patriarchal society. the reality is that Hua Mulan would feel completely comfortable in the traditional patriarchal chinese society.

Hercules kills his wife and kids? i forgot about that part. B)
speaking of Herc, they ALWAYS wussify him for movies and shows. I mean in myth he CARRIED THE SKY...and in movies and on TV, he has problems just beating up ppl. :P
but nope disney can't very well do literal greek myth w/ all its pedophilic homosexual adultery. Ganymede a cupbearer---- riiiiighhhhhtttttt.

It was nice to see an ASIAN star in an American movie.
Especially since she was female and wasnt drooling over some white guy in order to satisfy some white fantasy.
Although I'd imagine Mulan 2003 will have Mulan fighting evil Mongolians and preparing and loving her white boyfriend.

hansel and gretel's a grimm tale. they DO escape but i don't think anyone's disnified that tale yet. cuz the only version i know is when gretel pushes the witch in the oven.
grimm tales usually have a happy ending for the protagonists, but for their enemies...the endings are FAR from happy. :)
But Little Mermaid was Hans Christen Andersen, and that was super-disney-happified. In the original, I think the mermaid ends up dying. :(
