Major Quake Occurs Off Sumatran Coast
Tsunami Center Urges Authorities to Take Immediate Action, Including Evacuation of Coastal Areas

Monday, March 28, 2005; 12:08 PM

LONDON, March 28 -- An 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the sea off the coast of Sumatra Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey told Reuters on Monday.

A USGS spokeswoman said the quake struck 125 miles west northwest off Sibolga, Sumatra, 880 miles northwest of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, close to where a 9.0 December quake triggered a devastating tsunami in Asia.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning that the quake could generate a "widely destructive tsunami" and urged authorities to take immediate action, including evaculation of coastal areas.

if this quake doesn't kill as many ppl b/c of the warning, it's sure to kill off business in the area. i'm hella not going to vacation in an area thats had two massive earthquakes back to back.

The quake may not result in a tsunami, but it will be a major setback for the reconstruction work.

i'm hella not going to vacation in an area thats had two massive earthquakes back to back.

You live somewhere that's guaranteed 100% safe?

You live somewhere that's guaranteed 100% safe?no. i live in a place where there's a hurricane every decade or two. before that i lived in a place where there was a major tornado every decade or two.

i don't live in a place where major hurricanes hit back to back. and at least hurricanes have a season and a long warning time.

if the quake meant that there wouldn't be another quake for several years, then i'd go happily. if the quake signified a start of major quake activity, then i would go somewhere else. right now, it looks like the latter is true.

The quake's been upgraded to a 8.7, which is still smaller than the 9.0 that caused the Tsunami.

Luckily there have been no reports of a tsunami yet.

The planet is so unpredictable. I don't know what part of the world you are in, but look at the USA. That was hit by three hurricanes in six weeks last year. It's not a reason for people not to travel there though.

California also sits by two major tectonic plates.

They can collide in anyday.

Doesn't seem to deter people from moving there though.
