Church is the Spider-Man 3 Nemesis!
Source: Columbia Pictures March 22, 2005
Thomas Haden Church, who was most recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Sideways, has been cast as Spider-Man's new archenemy in the next chapter of the "Spider-Man" adventure, it was announced by director Sam Raimi and producers Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad.
Spider-Man 3, which is scheduled for release on May 4, 2007, will reunite the successful team that was responsible for the first two blockbuster films. The franchise has grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide ticket sales and the new film will again reteam director Raimi, producers Ziskin and Arad, and actors Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst as M.J..
Production on Spider-Man 3 is scheduled to begin early next year.
"In addition to the on-going relationship between Peter Parker and M.J., these films are driven by the great actors who have brought our villains to life," said Raimi. "Thomas Haden Church will be a fantastic and challenging new nemesis and we all look forward to working with him."
The identity of the new villain is being kept secret and while speculation is rampant about which character is being called into action, the studio will not comment on the casting beyond confirming Church.
Since his star-making role in Spider-Man 3, Church has been in demand. The actor is voicing one of the characters in the upcoming animated film Charlotte's Web, and he recently appeared in Columbia Pictures' Spanglish. Church previously appeared in such other films as George of the Jungle, 3000 Miles to Graceland, and Tombstone. In 2003, he also starred in, co-wrote and directed the comedy Rolling Kansas. From 1990 to 1995, Church played Lowell Mather in the TV series Wings.

I feel that he got this only because of Sideways, but I'm not sure who he would be playing...I'm thinking either Electro, Mysterio, or Sandman. Now if they can only improve the writing....

Hmm, well I'm still hoping for venom.
electro, mysteyo, the vulture, will'o the wisp, beetle, fixer, shocker, the jackal and sandman are second teir spidey foes.
First tier ones are Green Goblin, Dock Ock, Hobgoblin, Kraven, and Venom.
The Lizard goes somewhere in between.

I think the goblin/hobgoblin thing is going to be a much longer stretching arc unconfined to one film.

Or a seperate film alltogether.
Dr. Conners has already been played by someone else, so that minimizes the chance that it's the Lizard. I'd love to see Mysterio but I'm leaning towards Hobgoblin, although Harry Osborne likely to show up as the Green Goblin 2 sometime in the future may make that less likely since you don't wanna overgoblin the audience.

There's talk of him being Venom, but that shit is like a two movie length story on its own.

Billy Dee Williams never played Two-Face, but he did play Harvey Dent...

Well, probably in Spider-Man 3 he'll meet Eddie Brock, and use the black costume towards the end of it. Kind of like a sub plot...
(Tho I'm sure they'll have to reinvent the story, because it doesn't make sense for Peter Parker to be going to other planets with other super heroes to participate in the Secret Wars, when the movie is supposed to focus on Spider-Man. The cartood decided that they could tie it in to the Jameson Astronaut story, and sice we already know about Jameson's son and that he is an astronaut, it would probably be easy to go that route,OR JJ Jameson can simply assign parker to photograph the crater made from a meteorite impact.)
Then in Spider-Man 4, the costume can start acting up, and depending on how the fantastic 4 movie does, they can include spidey getting Reed Richards' help. If the FF movie sucks, he can go to the church Eddie Brock finds it in and pray it off. If they want to keep the focus on spidey and not include other heroes, then I'd go the second route.

I think Venom is like Wolverine... Fans of a certain age think they're the shit, and everyone else wonders what all the fuss is about. Same for Gambit and Rogue - the movie version of her character basically uses the comic book Kitty Pryde's characterization, probably because the comic book Rogue is so incredibly boring.
If I'm not mistaken, an "Eddie Brock" character was already introduced in the first movie. Of course, in the first Batman movie Harvey Dent was played by Lando from STAR WARS, and that didn't stop the producers from casting Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face in one of the sequels.

It's impossible for it to be Venom because in order for that to pan out, the symbiotic suit that Parker ditched, which is picked up by Brock later, is many many years from now.
thomas hayden church has such an obnoxious voice. i still remember him from his Ned & Stacey days.

Apparently, Sam Raimi has expressed his dislike for the character of Venom... which sucks for me, because I love the character.
In any case, Sandman or Mysterio would be my ideal pick. However, there are weird rumours going around that he'll be the Man-Wolf, which wouldn't make sense since I believe it was JJ's son who turns into that weird werewolf guy.

I second that. Unless it's something totally left-field.
The Lizard's already a given with Dr. Connors being intro'd in #2. Franco will be back as a principal, so definitely the Osborns (he he he) will play a part in #3 if not totally Hobgoblin'd to the max.
The key (and the only fun) to this is trying to see which character confroms best to Hayden Church's disposition and physical stature. Like Molina, he's more of an actor than a movie star, so you don't wanna waste his talented chops on strictly eye candy. There's a reason why Elektra didn't stick around after 2 weeks and they ain't goin' that route for Spidey. Venom could be CGI'd easily enough and would be the best money shot for the franchise, IMO. A talented writer could incorporate him into the movie story arc no sweat. Sandman is too brolic for him. Electro maybe, but not nearly exciting enough of a power in a villian these days. In a comic book is one thing, but you need something dynamic that will translate well onscreen for a visual pleasure.
My guess is a for-sure two-villian pile up on Spidey next go-round, with a possible 3rd villian turned "friend" towards movie's end. Odds are that they also might do a female villian this time...maybe Black Cat?

I just wanna see how they'd do the story around Gwen Stacey, and how she dies. That would make for a really good movie. Maybe?
Anyway, how about the Scorpion? And an explaination onto why Mr. Jameson hates Spiderman?

"2003? I gotta wait until Christmas of 2003 to see the end of this fuckin' series? I might be DEAD by then!"

They better have The Lizard in this one. Since they teased us with him in 2.

Cardigan?? I hope he meant Carnage. If it's some new evil alien symbiotic clothing that posses people then Spider-man is really running out of story ideas! It's the Cardigan...rarrrrr!!! Or lookout, it's the Camisole...grarrrrr!!!

rofl! Nice one! The Sinister Sox!! I always thought the Vulture was just wearing a green Italian cashmere jumpsuit. If you're commiting crime, you must wear something that feels good against the skin.

Gwen Stacy is now in the movie. This is going to be crowded as hell.
Bryce Dallas Howard Joins Spider-Man 3

Bryce Dallas Howard ("The Village") will play Peter Parker's love interest Gwen Stacy in Columbia Pictures' Spider-Man 3. Sam Raimi is directing the movie, which started filming this month.
Gwen is pivotal in Spider-Man lore as Peter's high school crush, his girlfriend and his first love. She ended up being kidnapped by the Green Goblin and died during a bridgetop battle in "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 121.
Columbia is keeping a tight lid on the third movie's story line, though it is known that Gwen is the third part of a love triangle that includes Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.
Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco are reprising their roles. Thomas Haden Church plays Sandman and Topher Grace a yet-to-be-named villain.
The movie is being produced by Laura Ziskin and Marvel Studios' Avi Arad. The story is by Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi, with a screenplay by Alvin Sargent.

Shit.
I heard a rumor that Sam Raimi said that as long as he is directer, he will never use Venom in any Spider-man film, can anyone confirm this?
Even if it is true, i doubt he has a choice, he still works for Marvel on these projects, and since Venom is the most popular character in the comics, they'll probably order him to put Venom in, otherwise they'd lose a lot of Venom fans, myself included, and with Batman Begins 2 and the new Superman movie coming out, they'll want to keep as much viewers as possible.

Boy, they're tossing a lot of different story lines into the third movie.
My only beef with the black costume is that it looks like they just took the old one and, well, painted it black (at least it appears that way from that angle). The symbiote black costume from the comic books was a more radical departure...
TB4000
02-24-2006, 10:22 AM
They claim the symbiote gets sucked into his original costume, basically turning it black, so it's more subtle. I don't know what's up now...Sandman, Gwen Stacy, Venom(or Electro). The thing will be out in three months, so they better start feeding us.

I highly doubt the Spiderman folks are worried about Superman Returns, what with all the post-production delays they've been having.
Batman is another story:P I'm sure Spiderman3 will be another great sequel, if the second was any indication. But when it all boils down to it, Christopher Nolan is a better writer/director than Sam Raime.

Hmmmmmmm...well, I'll just put faith in Raime and his writers since they've done an excellent job thus far of altering some of the comic book's original story lines.
