Rapper Lil' Kim Convicted of Perjury

By LARRY NEUMEISTER, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK - Rap diva Lil' Kim was convicted Thursday of lying to a federal grand jury to protect friends involved in a shootout outside a radio station.
Lil' Kim and her assistant were both convicted of perjury and conspiracy but acquitted of obstruction of justice. They each face up to 20 years in prison; sentencing was set for June 24.
The 29-year-old former sidekick and mistress of the late Notorious B.I.G., known for her revealing outfits and raunchy raps, testified that she did not notice two close friends at the scene of the 2001 shootout — her manager, Damion Butler, and Suif "Gutta" Jackson. Both men have since pleaded guilty to gun charges.
The jury saw radio station security photos showing Butler opening a door for Lil' Kim. And witnesses Antoine "Banger" Spain and James "Lil' Cease" Lloyd, who once teamed with Lil' Kim in the group Junior M.A.F.I.A, testified that Butler and Jackson were at the station with her.
Both defendants shook their heads as the verdicts were delivered. Lil' Kim's supporters broke out in sobs. After the verdict, when asked whether she had any comment, Lil' Kim shook her head.
The shootout occurred outside WQHT, a.k.a. Hot 97, when Lil' Kim's entourage crossed paths with a rival rap group, Capone-N-Noreaga. One man was injured as more than two dozen rounds were fired on the sidewalk.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cathy Seibel told jurors that the 4-foot-11 rapper, referred to throughout the trial by her real name, Kimberly Jones, had repeatedly lied to them, just as she did to the grand jury.
"The testimony was preposterous. It was insulting. It was insulting to your intelligence. It was insulting to the judicial process," Seibel told jurors.
Seibel belittled the defense that the sunglasses-wearing Lil' Kim didn't notice two people she knew at the scene of the shootout.
"You would have to believe they were magic sunglasses that only block out your friends who were shooting people," Seibel said.
Defense lawyer Mel Sachs argued that Lil' Kim had no reason to protect Butler and Jackson because she had already eliminated them from her life.
Lil' Kim testified that after the shooting she had a falling out with Butler, Banger and Cease because they were freeloading at her New Jersey town house. She said she decided to cut off Butler completely after he caused a ruckus outside a video shoot with Phil Collins (news).
"I was just fed up," she said. "They were taking advantage of me."
The rapper also testified at length about her modest background and mercurial career, which began with an impromptu audition for B.I.G. on the street in their Brooklyn neighborhood.
Lil' Kim won a Grammy Award for her part in the hit remake of "Lady Marmalade" in 2001.
The shooting took place outside the same station where the posses of 50 Cent and The Game traded bullets last week. No arrests have been made in that shooting, which left one of Game's henchmen wounded in the leg.

A fuckin' shame. Really. She had some skills, too.
She was so beautiful the way she was when she first came out and I actually loved her for being upfront and unabashed with her sexuality. Like a new version of Millie Jackson.
Then she gets that stupid boob job, an even more stupider facial job and then surrounds herself with stupid idiots who exist only in their psuedo-nihilistic manufactured world. No tears from me, she deserves what she gets for making the bed she lay in.

Is that unique?
I think it would have been more unusual if she wasn't all about her sexuality and if she weren't so tomboyish that everyone forgets that she has any sexuality because most popular female rappers have been one or the other.

There’s that for certain...I think, though, with Kim, it's less of being unique about it and more of just being like a modern day Mae West in nature. I felt that when Kim came out she was cut from a different cloth. Feminists could argue about her for days, but her sexuality (seemed to me, anyway) came from herself rather than it being fashioned to fit her for marketing purposes, like so many other run-of-the-mill one-trick-pony hip-hop women, like Trina, who just stuck her ass up in the air on the hood of a car and called that "representing." She didn’t seem fake about it. And she embraced it without shame and put it up front. Some people do it just to entertain but that seemed to be her honest character. Not to mention that physically, she was atypical to what you’d expect from that scene. Short and very small-breasted. I thought she was proud of that. At least she was like that BEFORE the boob job and face shit. I mean, a body can do what they want to with themselves, but going the Michael Jackson route really undermined much of the weight she was pushing. When you become an internet joke on bad celebrity face jobs, it’s time to re-evaluate your priorities!
On top of that, her lyrical skills backed up her visual flamboyancy. She wasn’t candy on the mic. In the past, anyway. I even had her back when she got flak for doing the blond, blue eyed thing. Why she would let other people around her fuck her shit up like this is beyond me, but as they say, you lie down with dogs, you wake up with fleas!

with lyrics like this "I don't want dick tonight, eat my pussy right", I just have to like lil'kim, I wish more women have the courage to say that to us (instead of a plain NO)and may be even take a step further "I don't want dick tonight, eat my pussy right, the anus is around, lick it round & round". mmm, tasty.......

It's funny that we admire the same qualities.
Like, I appreciate women who don't feel that they have to conform to a certain type to get by in the industry by hiding their sexuality.
But I guess I've always seen Lil' Kim as a fake. Not doing this because this is who she is, but as a marketing persona.
But you may be right.
I totally agree with giving her props for being so confident with her stature and all of that although it may not conform to the mainstream idea of beauty.
Rightfully so, too. She is gorgeous. . .Or was before the bee stung lips look.

If you go to the slideshow area on that news story, they have the asian chick as Monique Dopwell, so either one of those could be correct.

Like, I appreciate women who don't feel that they have to conform to a certain type to get by in the industry by hiding their sexuality.
see for this reason i adore women like jill scott and (particularly) amel larrieux..they exude beauty, intelligence and class and do not trade on the objectification of female sexuality to achieve fame..amny people hail kim as representing powerful women, all i see is a (once was) black woman conforming to the same old stereotypes of hyped up, animalistic black sexuality and that black women have to aspire to (near) whiteness to be attractive..also ive never seen her as someone who has taken control of her sexuality, just pandering to a male audience..i dunno..im not really a fan of that type of music/image..
But I guess I've always seen Lil' Kim as a fake. Not doing this because this is who she is, but as a marketing persona.
totally..thats why i was never buying the whole..'ive got my pussy and tits out..ooh arent i strong?'..like the whole 'stripper' debate..that whole empowerment of women through sexually objectifying yourself and demeaning yourself really never convinced me...

Even though we may be of different opinion on this matter, I still got your back, Asvenus!
This is why I said previously that you could argue about her for days from a feminist point of view, which would swing either for her or against her. Maybe it's a bit of both? I guess this is also one of those things where Anais Nin's maxim comes into play — that we see things as we ourselves are instead of how they are themselves. In Kim's case, I could be saying more about myself in defending sexual frankness, because I find women who are unabashed about that sort of thing attractive. At the same time, might the whole "my pussy comes first before your dick" schtick just a marketing ploy just to stand out in an already misogynistic, vidi-ho glutted, male-dominated hip-hop kingdom? I can't rule that out, even moreso as I saw that was what Kim was physically transforming herself into with the boob and face jobs. And if I were to allow my typical male side to step up to the plate for a minute here, I wanna say that I don't disdain boob or face jobs for vanity's sake — it's your body, not mine's — but for fuck's sake, get a job that makes you look BETTER, not worse!
The other thing that gives me an itchy rash over her is that it always seems like people of color won't ever get an even break if they are aggro with their sexuality and have control over it (another arguable point, to be sure)...but it's like when broken lightbulbs such as Britney Spears (no offense to anyone here who actually LIKES her) can come out of the box with a "virginal," clean-cut, girl next door image, then suddenly "grow up" and get all sex-goddessed up as if she just FOUND her sexual side, she doesn't get the same sorta flack. And then she goes faux-lesbian kissing Madonna like it's supposed to shock the shit out of us. Or when Lindsay Lohan started "growing" breasts and acting wild, her cute, little schoolgirl image was "compromised" and so, she just HAD to embrace this newfound sexuality of hers, of course the deux ex machina of celebrity made sure to market this switch appropriately...(insert sound effect of brick being thrown against a window here)
Now, if Kim didn't have talent to begin with, I'd believe more that the whole image thing was a manufactured shebang to bilk more moolah from people who wanted to buy into it. But since she did come out from the very beginning like that, not to mention listening to what she talks about, I'm more inclined to think that yes, that really IS her character, even if it is unavoidably and unfortunately compromised by sexual marketing from the image standards of the hip-hop world. Not that I agree with the all the ways she's showcased herself over the years in her career by a long shot...taste and style definitely should be considered...but if she has a sexual persona, she shouldn't have to HIDE that facet of her character if she's being honest to self and it is the fire and the passion behind her works.
Nobody knows that better than Kim herself, though. The people we choose to admire are what they are for our own personal reasons, ultimately. And I may be just proselytizing in trying to defend an image she all but self-shit on when she got that stupid face/boob job!
