'Buffy' creator doing 'Wonder Woman'

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon is preparing to bring to life another formidable female character in his latest movie endeavor.

Whedon as signed to write and direct "Wonder Woman," a live-action film adaptation of the DC Comics character, for Warner Bros. Pictures. (Warner Bros. and DC Comics are units of Time Warner, as is CNN.)

"Wonder Woman is the most iconic female heroine of our time, but in a way, no one has met her yet," Whedon said in a statement. "What I love most about icons is finding out what's behind them, exploring the price of their power."

He added: "There is a woman behind the legend who is very fascinating, very uncompromising and in her own way almost vulnerable. She's someone who doesn't belong in this world, and since everyone I know feels that way about themselves, the character clicked for me."

According to the lore of the comic book, Wonder Woman is the superhero name of Diana, an Amazonian princess from Paradise Island, an uncharted island to which the Amazons fled to escape domination by the ancient Greeks and Romans. She has super strength, bracelets that deflect bullets and a golden lasso that ensnares victims and forces them to tell the truth. She has, at times, even had her own super vehicle, an invisible plane.

Wonder Woman was created by educational consultant William Moulton Marston and first appeared in All Star Comics in 1941. Because of her popularity, she got her own self-titled comic series six months later. Lynda Carter played the heroine in the TV series that ran on ABC and CBS from 1976 to 1979.

Warner Bros. is known to have been eyeing a Wonder Woman feature for some time.

Whedon created the influential WB Network/UPN drama series "Buffy" and its spinoff "Angel." He is in postproduction on the Universal Pictures feature "Serenity," which he wrote and directed based on his short-lived Fox drama series "Firefly."

His other writing credits include the features "Toy Story" and "Alien: Resurrection," and he is penning the Marvel comic "Astonishing X-Men."

Apparently, the comic book's subliminal appeal were its scenes of bondage. Many of its pages included bad guys being tied up and punished by this busty amazon, or Wonder Woman being tied up herself. I wonder if the new movie will incorporate this subtheme.

oh yeah, absolutely. ever wonder why her weapon was a lasso?

i mean, she WAS an icon of feminism in an era where feminism was still really new and weird, and thus was oftentimes sexualized, especially in a case where feminism has to be given mass appeal.

it's just weird that whedon apparently has this thing for the dominatrix... and yet, apparently buffy was based upon X-men's kitty pryde?

Kitty Pryde, particularly the Claremont version of the character, was probably an inspiration for Buffy, but I don't think you can say he based the character on her.

The emphasis on bondage was probably intentional, as Wonder Woman's creator Dr. William Marston sometimes advocated the idea that all men submit themselves to the rule of women to develop a peaceful society. He may also have been trying to emphasize the way that women were "bound" by sexism and Western ideals of femininity. He's an interesting guy, actually; in addition to creating WW, he invented the lie detector and had a polygamous relationship with two wives and four children (all in the same house).

She bulged out of her suit all voluptuous-like. I probably had more of a girl-crush on her than let's say the Bionic Woman.

If Wonder Woman is into tying up guys, it's no surprise she never got it on with Superman. I can see it now:

—"Oh, Supe, you broke the lasso again!"

—"Sorry, Wonny Bunny, it's kind of a habit."

—"Superman, you're such a dick."

Even dating would have been tough. Can you imagine them at a restarant together?

—"Superman, you know I don't like you using your x-ray vision on other women while we're on a date."

—"X-ray vision? Me? No way!"

—"Why were you staring at that other woman like that?"

—"Stop obsessing and order your food."

—"Hello, my name is Desirιe, and I'll be your waitress tonight."

—"Whoa! Is that a birthmark?"

—"That does it! I'm leaving!"

Yeah, being a superhero must be tough.

"Wonny Bunny"? What the hell is goin' on in Shuriken's head?

Science Fiction author Larry Niven once wrote an essay about Superman and sex, where he concludes that Wonder Woman was basically the only woman Superman could have sex with, because a normal woman would be blown apart by the force of super-ejaculation (he paints a vivid image of Superman's boyhood room riddled with microscopic holes from Clark Kent masturbating and releasing super-strong, flying sperm).

 that was the most interesting thing i've read all day.

here are some names being tossed around for the role.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Biel, Kim Basinger, Sandra Bullock and Charisma Carpenter -- have been linked to the lead role.
Kim Basinger? uhm, no. i'd go with Biel.

i'd go with Biel.

As much as I don't like her, she'd be my first choice since she's got that Amazon quality to her. I'm not often intimidated, even by men, but she looks beefy and strong.

ya think she's beefy-lookin'? i'd always thought she fit into the lean-and-toned/cut category. me jealous.

I'd think twice before sassing her.

Charisma Carpenter gets my vote, if she put on a little more weight. However, Lynda Carter will forever be burned into my skull as my childhood icon of WW, along with Roger Moore as James Bond and Catherine Bach as Daisy Duke.

TB, if I'm not mistaken, all of your nominees are North American. Isn't W2 from an island somewhere in the middle of the ocean and of Greek descent? Any thought about getting a European actress with a continental accent for the part?

Actually, Catherine Bell is half Iranian, and 5'10, which makes me think she's the best fit to be honest. It would be perfect casting to find someone of Greek descent, but finding someone that can act AND has the stature is hard as hell....I almost forgot to put in Monica Belluci, Jolene Blalock, and Rhona Mitra.

Hey, I've just got an idea of where you could go if you want to take a less traditional route to the casting:

SALMA HAYEK

On the other hand, since Wonder Woman has to pass as an acculturated U.S. citizen for her secret identity as Diana Prince, I can see the filmmakers going with the regular North American.

George Miller (director of Babe and Happy Feet) is doing the Justice League movie now, and basically Biel is pretty much a lock to be Wonder Woman. Some fanboys like it, some don't. Some excuses are that she looks too muscular, that she's 1/4 native american and WW should be more "white"(whatever that means.)

Since the other pics of her have basically been nothing but her sticking her ass out, go for a less flattering one, even though she still looks hot making goofy ass faces.

My thoughts exactly. They have their own dream actresses to play her basically and are just grasping at straws to not get her.
