View Full Version : Racist "Hop Sing" restaurant scene in "Jake in Progress"

I wasn't even aware that ABC was premiering a new show, but I happened to catch part of the first episode of "Jake in Progress" tonight. The program looks retarded and uncreative, and the episode I saw plays up all these tired stereotypes about silly, flamboyant gay people. Another scene that bothered me a great deal takes place in this Korean restaurant, in which
(1) One of the characters makes a bunch of "ching chong kung fu" sounds that are supposed to be Korean. Now, I don't speak Korean, but I know the difference between ching chong sounds and Korean.
(2) This one woman snaps her fingers at a waiter, addresses him as "Hop Sing" and tells him to get her something (in the same manner in which white people used to address nonwhite subservients as "boy"). Now, we're not meant to like this woman, and her tablemates give her disapproving looks, but her racist behavior doesn't elicit any kind of a verbal response from the other main characters sitting at the table (who are all white). As well, the waiter just kind of shuffles away and does as he is told, as though nothing had been wrong with the way she had spoken to him. And keep in mind that all this is supposed to take place in the present day, in New York City.
I was quite pissed. Did anyone else see this? What are your reactions?
no, i didn't catch this. i did want to check this out before, since John Stamos is in it (i loved Full House, okay?). it is so fucking unnerving that hollywood has a double standard when it comes to which minorities they insult. you know they wouldn't have touched any derogatory words aimed towards a black waiter or anything.

John Stamos? I can't believe he landed a new tv series.
The only Stamos I care about is Rebecca.
I do my part by not watching that show since I never plan to anyway.

Yeah, it looked incredibly lame. I didn't realize the guy who plays Jack was in "Full House," but now it all makes sense. For those of you who saw the episode, you guys should do some emailing/letter-writing to complain. I don't have the time or energy for this kind of thing. Sorry.

The John Stamos comedy "Jake in Progress," for instance, failed to take advantage of the best time slot ABC could offer. Back-to-back episodes were presented in the hour that "Desperate Housewives' usually occupies, and managed barely more than half the audience that show typically draws.

John Stamos is pretty much the kiss of death for any new series. The next place you'll see him is on one of those reality shows featuring has been B celebs.

I liked full house as well.......especially the prime real estates they were living on.
:D
i just saw John Stamos on some cheesy CNN segment. he IS a dirty bastard, in the most pathetic way. he was a total sleazeball, blatantly flirting with the anchor and trying to be witty but just sounding juvenile. i wonder if he's on drugs or something, cuz he was squirming and couldn't sit still.
how disappointing cuz i loved him in Full House.

It doesn't matter if it's a TV show or not, RACISM is RACISM and it must be dealt with.

Yeah and there is nothing wrong with the label "Oriental"...
We should all learn to be less "sensitive". The world would be a better place if we just overlook racial slurs.
Hop Sing is a racist term connoting stereotypes of Chinese cooks. If that does not bother you, good for you. Your tolerance (or ignorance) for racial slurs is definitely higher than mine. But the least you should do is to respect other people finding this term offensive.
By the way in case people are wondering I was being very sarcastic in the last post.

Wasn't John Stamos supposed to be a "hottie" back in the day?
The series looked like it had a limited shelf life from the starting gate. Really, what original shit can you mine from a premise like that, anyway?
