View Full Version : Asian Celebrities

I almost always try to stay out of the entire IR discussions where APAs are concerned because both camps are always so stubborn and nothing good comes from them except for hurt feelings and bitterness, but there is something that has been bothering me a bit.
I'm aware of the apparent media bias in portrayal of Asians in film, tv, news, etc, but what about the actual Asians playing the parts? People always gripe about the AF/non-AF combinations presented, so I got a little curious as to the actual dating habits of the people in real life. Mostly due to my parent's subscription of People (which I peruse whenever I'm at their place) I've been keeping tabs for a few months on all the Asian (with a focus on APA) celebrities, male or female, and trying to figure out who/what they're going out with.
Females currently w/ non asian
Lucy Liu - well currently not dating i think, but here (http://forums.yellowworld.org/showthread.php?t=21050)
Linda Park - Dating co star Tom Hardy (Enterprise)
Sandra Oh - Married to Writer/director Alexander Payne
Lisa Ling - Engaged to media entrepreneur Philip Levine
Connie Chung - Married to Maury Povich
Kristi Yamagutchi - married to Bret Hedican
Vera Wang - Married to Arthur Becker
females currently w/ asian
Ming Na - Married to Eric Michael Zee
males currently w/ non asian
b.d wong - dating agent Richie Jackson
Ming Tsai - Married to Polly Talbott
males currently w/ asian
John Cho - dating someone japanese-am, can't remember the name
Unknown
Daniel Dae Kim - married...
Lauren Tom?
Kal Penn?
Jin?
Well there are a whole lot more but I really can't remember them at the moment. What strikes me the most (besides there being a lot more female APAs than Males that I can remember, which probably isn't too surprising) is how many more are involved with non-APAs, for both men and women.
Now the question I'm asking is; to be more successful in a high profile celebrity job, is it better to date/marry non-asian? The perception, for both the men and women of APA descent, seems to be yes, from this rough, and highly unstatistical list. Or is it the ones that happen to be more successful happen to date/marry non-APA? Is it causation? Correlation? Or just pikachupacabra's mad, late night ramblings and there is no sort of link at all besides randomness?
I don't want this thread to devolve into the usual IR BS. Keep it civil please, and focus on the topic, and only delve into IR and the AF/WM crapola if you have to.

i don't think it's anything.
just the environment.
they work in the entertainment industry.
not many men in the entertertainment industry here
are asian.
so they sometimes date more white guys.

the discrepency is probably due to their work environment like tends to begets like and in the entertainment field asian males are lacking. it's really no big deal in my opinion.
on a somewhat related note:
in my own observation, i have noticed that the asian males, both in the media and those i know around me, that are dating a white woman or married to a white woman; the white women are a lot bigger than the asian males. they're like friggin amazons. case in point: that dude from better luck tomorrow and his wife. in the wedding pic of them holding one another. she's fucking huge compared to him. the two just look mismatched and it just looks ridiculous.

well, it isn't about just AF/WM, I was curious as to both genders. I can't remember most of the men, but I recall a higher percentage as well dating/marrying non-asian as well (Thanks CSB for the Parry Shen comment, yeah I think he is also). So I was wondering if it was the environment, or if it was some sort of "x factor" that makes asians in the entertainment business just date non-asian more often? Or is it just the fact that there is such a dearth of asians in the business in general that makes it hard for them to meet each other?

well then there aren't that many asian women
in the entertainment industry so the asian
men end up dating white women.
i don't see anything else beyond that.

Yeah...thats what I was thinking as well. I was curious if it could be something else though, like some sort of unconcious desire to "stand out" from the crowd? I dunno though, if they're ALL dating/marrying non-asian none of them are standing out in the crowd from each other anyways...
Does anyone know what DDK and Rick Yune are doing? How about Nicole Bilderback or Marie Matiko?

yah. my brother has hairy legs. ew. no offense to those with hairy legs. but i like em smooooove.
i think that, while there are some asians who think dating/marrying non-asians (specifically, white) is an easy way to climb the social ladder, most are as applehead mentioned: whatever your environment is. if you're working in an industry with few asians...ya know. if you live in an area with few asians, same thing.

Oh my, are trying to pay yourself an enormous compliment disguised as a self-deprecating remark? Stop Googling yourself and step off your high horse. Get real, medical professionals don't give a shit about actors and actors can care less about medical research.
