Ok, so rappers 50 cent and Ice-T used to be pimps. Now, from my understanding, pimps tend to operate by.. dominating women, beating them, manipulating them, encouraging them to get addicted to drugs, etc. No?

A pimp is an agent for prostitutes, i.e. he has a "team" (for lack of a better word) of workers for him who in turn pay him for the work they get.
What does that have to do with anything, though? I don't understand the point of this thread.
And btw I doubt 50 was ever a pimp. That's nothing more than a persona corporate America (i.e. the record companies) have created for him. 50, more than anything, is your stereotypical ghetto sociopath. Think O-dog from Menace II Society.

the point is.. gee, how to put it.. that all of this adulation for 50, you know, "overcoming the odds" and all that bullshit... is misplaced. He's definitely no hero of any sort, hell, he's probably hit women in his lifetime. eh, you know, it's not the classic self-destructive behavior of most outlaws, but predatory.

So what? 50 Cent never considered himself to be a hero. Why do people automatically see musicians as heros, anyway? Which part of 50 Cent, other than his abs, is admirable? I don't like his music. I personally like Dr. Dre. His words have meaning. He's got something to say. What does 50 have to say? I don't know, because I can't hear what he's saying.
The commercialization of pimps, is purely for marketting towards white subburban kids, since they're the largest part of their income.
50 Cent ain't no hero. Snoop Dog (still pimp'n) ain't no hero. Neither's Ice T. So what?

who said 50 cent and ice-t were pimps?
where did you read this?
I thought 50 used to deal coke or crack? Never heard anything about him being a pimp though. And what is with the assumption that he "probably hit women in his lifetime?" Is it because you (wrongfully) assumed he was a pimp and, of course, all pimps must hit women? That's kind of a fucked up assumption, isn't it?
I think 50 Cent's story is simply one of living a shitty childhood (mom was murdered), being involved in some shady shit (dealt drugs), overcoming the odds (got shot nine times), and making it off of the street. Not sure if that makes him a hero (and, like Propellerhead said, I don't know that he ever proclaimed to be one), but I'm happy for the guy that he's making money selling records instead of selling crack.
Having led a comparatively privileged life compared to people like 50 cent (before his hip hop days, if his stories are to be believed), I'm not really going to judge him for shit like dealing drugs and such since I've never been in that position. Dig up an actual story about him beating women (instead of unsubstantiated assumptions based on lord knows what) and I may change my mind, however.
As to Ice T, I recall seeing some documentary on HBO where it was mentioned that he was a "pimp" but I wasn't sure if it meant pimp in the prostitution context, or in the hip hop glorified pimp "lifestyle" (i.e., excessive extravagance) context.

I think he said in an interview that he was a pimp-pimp for a quick second, but today he still calls himself a pimp who is occasionally a ho.
He has this whole philosophy where he says everyone walking the earth is one or the other. Most people have pimp days and ho days.
You're a pimp when you're in control of your own life and have people working to keep you happy. You're a ho when someone else in controlling what is yours and you are working for them.
A lot of people are calling themselves pimps, but, as is the case with Ice, they don't always mean that they are a Bishop Don Magic Juan.
On Ice-T's ho days, you won't find him selling himself on a corner, but rather selling himself on NBC.

Thanks to its continuous overusage in every which way possible in media, the word "pimp" has TOTALLY lost its power and edge in meaning...I mean, EVERYONE and their grandmaws can call themselves a "pimp" these days!
Just another marketing flavor of the month...what's next, I wonder? Hunchbacks who ring bells for a living?

That was the initial appeal. Not that I can blame anyone for being impressed. Hey, my cousin got shot at seven times LESS than 50 did and he couldn't walk straight for the rest of his life! Give me the name of 50's surgeon the next time I soak up a few calibers cuz not only does he strut without a limp, you can't even see the dents in his skin!
Now that's been "pimped" out waaaay past its sell date. The Game is trying to pimp his "hey, look at me, I got shot a buncha times, too!" But now it's not impressing Mr. White Suburbanite Trying To Live His Ghetto Fantasy Thru Shirtless Negro Rapper Of The Year anymore.
I guess somebody's gotta find a new innercity "hood danger/social ill" to pimp to the masses.

50 is not a pimp, he's your typical dude from the hood doing hood shit - selling drugs, gang-banging, etc.
He's not particulary talented, like a Biggie, Jay-Z, Nas, or anything like that. He's more like a "reporter" telling his own stories from the rough side of town, or other people's stories. In that way, he reminds me of Pac. However, the biggest difference b/w him and Pac I see is that Pac's horizons were much wider, as an artist. 50 just gets up there and tells you what he's done or what he's seen, or threatens you. Pac did all that, but he also dropped knowledge, with encouraging words for both young boys and girls in the ghetto, struggling in poverty, high crime, broken neighborhoods, bad schools, etc. 50 is very limited as an artist in terms of what he talks about on a track. Quick example of a Pac song ("Young Niggaz") -
"Now that I'm grown, I got my mind on bein somethin
Don't wanna be another statistic, out here doin nuttin
Tryin to maintain in this dirty game, keep it real
and I will even if it kills me, my young niggaz
break away from these dumb niggaz
Put down the guns and have some fun nigga, the rest'll come nigga
Fame is a fast thang, that gangbangin
puttin niggaz in a casket, murdered for hangin
at the wrong place at the wrong time, no longer livin
Cause he threw up the wrong sign, and every day
I watch the murder rate increase, and even worse
the epidemic and diseases, what is the future?
The projects lookin hopeless, where
more and more brothas givin up and don't care
Sometimes I hate when brothers act up, I hit the weed
and I proceed to blow the track up, for young niggaz"
You'll never hear a line like that from 50. The Game, yeah. 50, no. 50's whole album -
"I'll shoot you - I came up too fast. Them rich white folks in Connecticut do not like how I moved into their neighborhood, but i don't give a fuck they can kiss my rich black ass. I've been to prison for selling drugs. I'll sell drugs to your whole family, have y'all hooked. I'm a hustla. I run Jamaica, Queens."

ice-t was a fairly prominent pimp back in the day.
however, i'm really not sure what this has to do with anything. a lot of white celebrities are found beating the shit out of women, making sex tapes, hiring prostitutes, etc.
why're we focussing on rapper ex-careers? why is woody allen idolized as a comic genius but mike jackson is on trial for having a messed up childhood?
i think that alot of mj's accusers are just people who exploit him for his money and use a racist angle.

it doesn't help wacko jacko's cause that he looks like a freak and admitted he sees nothing wrong with sleeping in the same bed with little boys.
woody allen on the other hand never publicly claimed to have a relationship with soon yi when she was a minor. he was actually investigated for statuatory rape when their affair first became public.
they're both freaks.
though, i'm not gonna lie and say that the idea of adopting an unwanted little girl, raising her and then dumping the old battle axe and taking her as a gf/lover/wife did tickle my fancy when i first heard about it.

I remember something about questionable pictures of Soon Yi surfacing when the news first broke. I believe Mia Farrow found them of Soon Yi when she was possibly 14-15 and she believed them to be taken by Woody Allen. What child molester afraid of prison is going to admit his predatory behavior?
I don't think Michael Jackson is morally innocent. I'm just not sure he's criminally guilty of actual molestation without more direct evidence and they've been putting the microscope up his ass for years. Put good ol' Woody under that same scrutiny and who the hell knows what would turn up.

yes. i think her and woody allen were separated then.
she went into her apt. and saw nude photos of
soon yi in his apt. i think by then she was 18 or 19.
no one knew how old the photos were.

I think MJ is a freak but is innocent. They are exploiting the racist and "aren't black people freaks?" angles. Have you noticed there has never been any proof all these years?

I'm not convinced he's a child molester but I don't think he's innocent. I think he's just as guilty as the parents of the children that allow the sleepovers. With that many adults in on it, someone needs to have the moral fortitude to say "No, grown men should not be sleeping with children for fun and games." I have even more problems with the parents of the kids involved than I do Michael Jackson because I think many of them are jackals nipping at his heels because he's a kooky reclusive multi-millionaire with a penchant for little kiddies. In other words, a tasty $$$$ target.
At the very least, the man is disturbed. And he should be allowed to live his life in whatever diminished psychological capacity he has. He earns his own money, pays taxes and with a childhood in front of America like that I think he has the right to be as fucked up as he wants. It's the responsibility of all the adults involved to not let children 'sleep' unsupervised with someone like that, however. If he stopped doing that, many of his problems would go away.
Anyhow, the greater burden is on the parents than MJ, IMO, but I wouldn't go as far as innocent. That's some seriously hinky shit and no matter whose fault it is it really needs to end. If he really wants to help kids he can still do so without sleeping with them.
My many cents.

In other words, a tasty $$$$ target.I agree he should stop sleeping in the same bed with children because it's very creepy and bizarre and that he hasn't molested children. For some reason I also believe Liz Taylor when she says he hasn't molested children. MJ is child-like and a victim of the parents as much as the children if he is harshly penalized or fined.
