I want to dye my hair black, but I heard that it doesn't look like black hair. Does anyone have any suggestions for hair dye? Which one is better...easier...

if you have dark hair you're gonna need to bleach it first to lighten it in order for any color to show up.

Hair dyed black typically looks flatter and not as shiny as naturally black hair. Also, it can look blue or purple in certain lighting conditions. What's so bad about having brown hair?

I want blue hair.
Even if you're going darker you need to bleach the hair so the natural coloring doesn't interfere, and the dye gets picked up easier. If you have dark hair like me, I'd have to bleach it a few times (2-3) to get it right, even using 40 vol bleach.
Like Yuhei said, dyed hair won't look natural, since you just abused the crap out of it with bleach. You can help it out with special shampoos and conditioners to restore some sheen and life.
I haven't found a black that looks natural. Feria's isn't supposed to look natural but it looked pretty cool with a violet sheen in flourescent and hard light and I used that when I had to look normal after going through the entire Manic Panic product line. You're going to need shampoo for dyed hair that won't strip the dye as much. I was able to get away with reapplying it every 5 days or so. One box is meant for long hair and I had short hair so a box would last two applications. Easy to apply, and ignore the fact that there's a female on the box.
If your hair is turning brown... is it also thinning? It wouldn't be a good idea to damage your hair with bleach in that case.
Oh, forgot to mention, the boxed dyes do have bleach in them but it's not enough for dark hair. Find a beauty supply shop and get 40 vol (for black hair) and 30 vol (for brown) bleach and activator. I used Loreal which can be painful on the scalp but it's got good lift. Manic Panic's Lightning Kit is only 30 vol so it didn't work for me, but it's a good solution for brown hair. If you can get your hands on Redken Blonde Dimensions, use that, but you need a beauty license at most supply stores.
Dyes... if you can find a supplier that will sell to you without a license, try Framesi. It is expensive but it is good. It will last for 2-3 months, whereas boxes at the drugstore will start fading after a week. It will be tougher to work with since the dyes are meant to be mixed. If you have stylist friends start sucking up.

It's simple.

3) Shampoo and condition
4) ???
5) Profit!

I would have to disagree with Ism on this one... I don't think it's that hard... I go through phases of wanting my natural black hair to brown hair so I've always just used a dark, dark brown color almost black, to get it to my natural color. No bleach was needed. Unless you want that raven black hair, you really don't need to use bleach before hand. That is of course if you want a more natural look. I like L'oreal’s line of colors especially the Feria and Open... Feria even has a men's line... Or you could just go to a salon and have it done for you...

Meki is right...DO NOT bleach your hair, you will destroy the pigment and damage your hair...only ever need to bleach hair if choosing lighter shades.
i know of the 'browness' you mean, i dont like it either. you may not need to dye your hair though, often it is a sign of poor diet and/or damaged cuticles...when my hair needs conditioning and trimming it looks a couple shades lighter. so maybe get a deep conditioning treatment and trim your hair, take some supplements or douse it in olive oil...usually does the trick for me!!
if you want the raven black look...forget all the feria/sheria stuff, get yourself down to the nearest (probably asian owned!!) black haircare store and buy this lil packet of powdered hair dye, (ask them...they'll know) mix with some water, slather on and youre away..BLACK hair for SP!!

Where do people like myself (tight budget, bought too many video games) get a deep conditioning treatment. I trimmed my hair myself; it's a couple inches shorter, is that okay?

trimming hair (although i often hack at mine too!!) should always be done with proper hair cutting scissors...
for a cheapo hair conditioning thingy..you know those travel size packs of shampoo/conditioner etc, get one of those or buy an individual sachet of your chosen conditioner, get them in almost all chemist/drugstores/hairshops etc or make your own concoction of shit you think is good for hair (can include one or more!!), like egg yolks, coconut oil, avocadoes, olive oil, placenta(!!), glycerine, etc etc...slather on, wrap warm towel round for 20 mins, rinse and youre away!!

unless you have professional scissors, alot of difference...haircutting scissors seal the cuticle as they cut and dont blunt or tear the hair strands...you can damage the cuticle if using other kinds

sinisterpanda: just live with it. gel up your hair, slick it back and it'll look black.

no bleach please. if your hair is light it'll pick up the
black color.
use just for men. that looks very black when you apply it.
although after a while it starts to look brown.
but that's better than the black changing to blue.

Ah! No wonder the splits seem to be getting worse and worse.
I wish I knew this a few inches ago.

No, i don't want to look like all the other asians. My hair will stay long, down and clean.
Thanx asvenus for the info, I guess I better get some barber shears if I plan on cutting my hair in the future.

i know plenty of hair color brands, but im not sure you can get them there. my friends we are always cutting each others hair and changing our hair color every season, its really fun. this spring i want to go for metallic silver tails with all black basic, because last term i was a twist perm with sunshine yellow all over and wearing the surf style of clothes. i like that op style but its a little getting boring. especially in the new season magazine they had a really cool sample showing the semi-military style was mixed with bk style and the guy had hair extensions. i liked their coordinate idea so i will try it. yah, this summer im going to be bk style with military edges and get extensions. and maybe in fall i will do the basic black with blue highlight hair so i can wear my rock clothes again that i never worn since last year.
