Okay, I've been having a LOT of trouble staying awake during my Functions of a Complex Variable math class. I tried deep breathing to get more oxygen to the brain, but it's no use. I fell asleep with my eyes OPEN! OPEN!
Anyone have any hot tips on staying awake in class?

The only longterm way is to get more sleep. BUT I'm not one to speak. I almost never get the eight hours I need, and I often end up with less than six.

I am so fucked. I have 2 midterms tomorrow and I'm exhausted due to activities unrelated to studying. I'm just going to nap for 2 hours and wake up again at midnight for an all nighter review session and hope that I don't sleep through the alarm. For backup I asked one of my friends to call me, lol

dammit..i was gonna suggest my usual cocktail of pro-plus with hideous amounts of red-bull buuuut if youre not against hard drugs then coke/speed cocktails always a good choice...
for some reason marvin gaye (70's stuff) and E. Badu always seem to keep me awake with an injection of gypsy kings  ...wierd i know but it helps...
PS: i am soooooooo joking about the drugs...

step out of the class and do some stretching
exercises in the cold. or just walk up and down
the stairs.
a short walk. even if it's to the bathroom helps a lot.

i had the same problem.
now i start to nod off in meetings. Terrible, I know. I just try to constantly be drinking cold water or drinking coffee, but then I'm pissing like a race horse. I've been known to spill a few cups by "sleep drinking."

Having a good night's sleep helps. Oh, and don't eat right before a class. That usually puts me to sleep at the drop of a hat. Of course, you can always drink coffee or take caffeine pills.
Pill...not so much, but coffee and tea are nice.

Orange Juice works for me. I think it might be the citric acid.
Another thing I do when I'm driving is mental math. Unfortunately, this probably won't help you in math class. If I'm on a highway and see a sign like x miles to Destination, I try to mentally figure out how long it will take given my current speed, then add variables like if I wanted to get there in y amount of time how fast would I have to go or if I were going z mph when I would get there, etc...

What time of the day is the class? I always tried to grab the early a.m. math classes because I was more awake than afternoon when my blood sugar would be lower.

Here's my advice if you want to wake up without caffeine. For the duration of this class whether a term or semester, keep a schedule where you're properly nourished before you get to that class, preferably you've already digested and have enough complex carbs to sustain your energy level and not crash. On the days that you don't have that class, try to do something active during that time period and keep the same eating schedule as if you were going to class. Exercise lightly from 6-7:30 on non-class days or read something that requires focus.
Wear a rubber band on your wrist and snap it every 5 seconds, narcolepsy-style.

why oh why do institutions do this...the class students are likely to find most challenging they think..ooh lets up the ante and make them take it when theyre most tired aswell...when i was studying, my contract and tort lessons were always at this time..luckily this was around the time i discovered the wonders of caffeine infused with bull testicle..a.k.a 'red bull'

It's probably because the higher up level courses are usually taken by juniors or seniors who may have a job? That's the only logical explanation i can think of.

out of all my years of pulling all nighters cramming for exams and being on call possibly going on 24 hrs without sleep on occasions when i started working, in my opinion, there's really no secret other than in the wise words of starsky as maury finkel you just gotta "do it...do it."
some words of inspiration to help you stay awake (http://www.jahozafat.com/cgi-bin/mp3s.cgi?Starsky_And_Hutch=comeondoit.mp3)
There was one time last semester. I was lecturing and one of my students made a comment. Later as I lectured further and I made a reference to his comment. Lo and behold he was sound asleep and did not even know I was talking about him. I could not stop laughing…
What can I say. I was there before on the other side. I usually don't get mad. I do feel sad that these people are wasting their time and money. I made it clear to my students if they feel they have something better to do, by all means go do that other thing...

My bio teacher made fun of me while I was sleeping...
Seriously though, if your'e trying to stay awake, drink Green Tea, it has ridiculous amounts of caffeine I think, and the fact that it's hot wakes you up also.

When I feel sleepy, I just stroke the meat...to the point of climax. Then I stop..........It truely works!
