View Full Version : How often do you go to the movies

Movies have gotten too expensive for me. A couple of years ago when I moved into my house I got surround sound and a DVD player. Only been to the actual theater a hand full of times since then. I get DVDs through Netflix and VCDs through friends, so far it's been working out pretty well. Hell, I even get quite a few new releases for free from the library.

How often do you guys go to the theater and pay full price? If so, do you only pay full price for certain movies? Or do you go pretty regularly?

note: Tonight's wine is a rather excellent Alsatian white. Expect typos.

Wow, I used to go every weekend, but now I don't as often. Once a month at most. I saw The Transporter this weekend. The last time I went was to see Minority Report at the beginning of summer.

I used to go all the time because I had friends working in the theaters near me. But now that I'm in LA, I barely ever go and pay full price. Unless somebody pays for me or it's a movie I really really want to see, you can usually count me out.

[EDIT: Either way, I get a student discount... so instead of $9, I usually pay $6. ]

I used to go pretty frequently, maybe once every couple of weeks just to see whatever. Now, I haven't seen a flick at the big screen since, I think, Minority Report. The home theater experience is good, but it's no replacement for seeing a big Hollywood flick at a crowded theater with fat sound and a nice screen.

i always carry my student i.d. , and usually aim towards going to movies during the bargain matinee hours.

oh yes, i am totally guilty of being a movie hopper. Paying for one movie, and watching mulitple others afterwards.

I'm a poor man. I don't go very often haha.

Gotta take advantage of kazaa and good ol' cable modem though...

I'd say on average I goto maybe 5 movies a year and they cost 10.50 a piece. Movie hopping, that's the way to do it...

ummm i'm sure a 45 dollar/ month cable modem ends up costing more than going to movies year round. :P

esp since you hop. :)

i only go to movies w/ friends. So I don't do that many, either. This year, I've only gone to maybe 2 or 3 in all. Usually, I probably do about 5 or more, but this year has been slow.

And Uncle Tat is my main movie supplier. :)

that's probably why the # of HK flicks I've seen is approaching the # of American flicks i've seen this year :D

we get free movies before they're shon in theaters at UCD. other than that, if i pay for a movie, i'm there all day ^_^. i only do that with Cindy when we're bored and have the money to blow. with friends and stuff back home, we would walk in, take a leak, and go into one of the movies or two.

i've probably only payed for movies mostly on dates. that's about it.

I only go about once a month these days, and usually cause its on a date. Most of the time I rent DVDs now. I have 2 roomates and someone's always renting something new, so we always have something to watch. I used to have a 'hot-box' but that got zapped, so now I'm back to regular cable. :(

 Mine is still alive and kicking. Knock on wood.

Blackbox and bootleg for me. Unless it's something I really want and can't wait to watch, which basically hasn't been all that much.

I've been meaning to buy a new one, but my buddy who works for the local cable company tells me to wait. He says that the old ones are going to be obsolete soon as the companies are switching over to digital anyday now (this was 6 months ago and counting)....

The black box I got is weird (haha that sounded bad), I have to have basic cable. But I get everything, pay per view 24/7 (ie all the hot fights etc etc) hotnet, playboy channel etc etc etc.

yeah, that's the way all blackboxes work, I think. You gotta have the proper wiring in place, which you get when the cable man comes over after you get basic cable.

Two movies I got lined up for next month (circumstances permitting *Oh Mi Toh Foh*) that I've waiting a year for: Two Towers and Reloaded. My cheapskate ass is even going to spring for a big drink and popcorn.

I can't remember the last time I went to the theatres prior to watching The Ring last weekend with some friends at Irvine Spectrum (last showing) for $7 w/ student ID...

Movies have just gotten too expensive in general for the poor starving college student. Gawd, I remember back in the day when it was $3.75.

If my friends and I ever go out to AMC, I happily play the lemming to collect money and buy tickets with the movie watchers card and earn credits for popcorn, drinks and... more tickets! heh

I've lived most of my life in a city that doesn't offer movie price discounts for students.

i only go out to movies in spurts. there will be long dry spells and then, crazy movie-going almost every weekend. of course, student discounts play a large factor.

speaking of movies, i was going to watch "8 mile" tonight but the two late shows were all sold out! boo! who knew it would be so popular?

the last movie i saw was knockaround guys.

there are some movies that requires viewing on the wide screen with great sound..

but i have digital cable with in demand and on demand movies so i rarely buy dvd's.. or rent.

i don't go out of my way to watch a movie at the theatres.. unless it's an excuse to get together with friends..

but i don't know how i lived without digital cable before.. i feel really helpless when the guide section isn't working..
