the thing is sony was so reluctant to release a player that can play the MP3 format....because they were so worried about their own music business......and P2P freeloaders not paying them.

:p

Sony is finally releasing players that natively support MP3 (as opposed to converting MP3 to ATRAC). This is relatively old news.

The newest news is that they might add native MP3 support to their Hi-MD players as well as their drive/flash players.

Good. Been using it a lot recently to listen to books/lectures/language lessons "on tape". The only bad thing about it that I'll say is that the navigation "strip" UI isn't as good as the iPod's "wheel" interface because the primary control button is located in the center of the strip and it can be a little tricky to scroll up and down without inadvertently activating the button.

Otherwise, it's been a great addition to my pocket.

It's actually more expensive and comes with less memory

what do you guys think about the ipod mini?

If i get an ipod, I'll probably get a mini.

It's more colorful, cheaper, and more importantly, there's just not that many good music that warrants a 20-40 GB storage IMO.

i have one, but i'd rather have the larger-capacity one. this is nice and small, but the battery life isn't that great. maybe something is wrong with mine.

i don't like that i can't add music to my current library without deleting the whole library. for instance, i'd like to add songs from my friend's PC, but cannot do so without deleting my few hundred songs.

i think there's an iPod thread somewhere...

cool. I see, that's kinda annoying.

I tried to search the ipod thread but found results so i returned to the sony thread.

Actually you can, I forgot how though, you need to NOT allow the iPod to sync with your friend's music library, then add them after you attach the device. Let me see if I can find that thread on anandtech.com.

[qoute=rar]There should be a setting somewhere in iTunes (might only be able to find it when the iPod is connected) that sets iTunes up to auto-load all music in the iTunes library upon connection. Which, of course, means deleting whatever is already on there and replacing it. Turning that preference off should solve your problem and allow you to connect to all three computers and put music from all three on the iPod.

To transfer the music back off the iPod onto a computer other than the one you originally got it from, however, gets trickier, and you'll need some third-party program to do it. There are a bunch out there, though I've never used one so can't recommend one for you. [/quote]

I think that's intentional though, not a defect. It's there to prevent people from using iPods to grab their friends' entire music libraries, and fill it up without paying a cent for their music.

But if I remember correctly, there's a fairly simple workaround - I think it had something to do with making invisible files visible so that you could add MP3s to the folder on the iPod that holds all the music.
