my parents are always having problems with their computer from the mundane (printer issues/caps lock on) to the more serious (deleting autoexec files). Do you know any good programs i can install on their computer to remote access it next time they have a problem so i don't have to haul ass all the way over there to fix it? you know, the ones that open up a window on your screen thats their desktop. then i could also talk them through the problem on the phone.

use remotelyanywhere
or you can use the windows xp remote computer connection..but then they can't see what you are doing...
Windows XP has Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop built-in, and you can also install a VNC-type program which might have better bandwidth considerations (I use TightVNC myself).

Do you know if any of these are easy to "hack" or anything? I don't want to leave a port glaringly open on my parents comp for all the world to butt rape. I'd also like a program that allows them to see exactly everything I am doing so that I can talk them through it while I'm doing it. I used VNC back in college to play pranks on friends, is that program any good nowadays?

i recommend remotelyanywhere...you can choose whatever port you want to use...and once you install it on your parents' computer..you can access to it anywhere...just open an internet browser and you'll be able to..unlike other software like pcAnywhere...you have to install the software on both ends...
VNC is password-based and you can change the port but that's all security by obscurity. You can make it so that mouse movements will show up so they can see what you're doing. There might be a secure VNC variant out there but I use an SSH tunnel (key only) through my firewall to help secure it.
