wow
Loss of parents shaped scholar but didn't define her (http://www.azcentral.com/families/articles/0216ashley16.html)
Ashley Tang sometimes wonders what kind of person she'd be if her parents were still alive.
"Would I be the same?" the 18-year-old asks herself. "I don't think I would."
Ashley's mother, Susie Tang, died when Ashley was 7, and her father, Ben Tang, died when she was 15.
Only a freshman at the time she was orphaned, the losses shaped her but did not define her.
On her own, in her modest Glendale home, Ashley has carried on. With no parents, it's the belief that God has a great day planned for her that nudges her out of bed each morning. And it's her desire to earn straight "A's" in school that keeps her out of youthful trouble.
Tonight, Ashley will be given the Apollo High School Achievement Above All award that names her the Student of the Year.
