Loss of parents shaped scholar but didn't define her (http://www.azcentral.com/families/articles/0216ashley16.html)

Ashley Tang sometimes wonders what kind of person she'd be if her parents were still alive.

"Would I be the same?" the 18-year-old asks herself. "I don't think I would."

Ashley's mother, Susie Tang, died when Ashley was 7, and her father, Ben Tang, died when she was 15.

Only a freshman at the time she was orphaned, the losses shaped her but did not define her.

On her own, in her modest Glendale home, Ashley has carried on. With no parents, it's the belief that God has a great day planned for her that nudges her out of bed each morning. And it's her desire to earn straight "A's" in school that keeps her out of youthful trouble.

Tonight, Ashley will be given the Apollo High School Achievement Above All award that names her the Student of the Year.

Man that story's enough to make anybody pack-it-in.

Good to see she's survived mentally.

Glad she's got the support group she does in her church.

Wow. If anything like that happened to me, you can be sure I wouldn't be a straight A student. That's just incredibly courageous of her.

And here I thought nobody took care of her. That she was an only child, with no other relatives to be her legal guardian.

She's got two older siblings (late 20's) and an Aunt and Uncle to take care of her.

You're right. It's a great story and more power to her but it's not like she was raised by wolves in the woods or something.

There are actually many young people in far worse situations than she ever was. But most of those kids of course will never have her level of achievement.

Their stories are not inspirational. Just sad.

it's a good story, but i think it speaks more for family ties and support than the kid's own achievement. there are others who have grown up without that kind of family support.

This is a good lesson to show us what type of help the Tsunami orphans will need.
