Every once in a while, someone in the family brings up the phrase "Chinatown Shoes" in relation to something.
Ever heard of it?
They've gotten into the habit of using this term to describe stuff you don't want on the bottom of your shoes when you come in the house.
As in -- "don't come in this house with those Chinatown Shoes!"

Funny you bring that up, Chott...I just READ this expression recently in something, maybe a magazine or a graphic novel...was kinda like, "huh?" and as soon as I did, I wondered what the YW peeps would think of it...

No, I'm about a 1/4 something else. Pinning anybody down on what that is is tough. And it's funny that I don't have any known relatives of that strain. That facit came-out of Shanghai a long time ago.
But it's the Asian (Chinese ancestory) relatives that say this. :frown:
I did a google search on the term, and it does seem to be equated to cheap shoes that one could pick up in a Chinatown.
Shit, if that's the case, what's the difference between them and say shoes from Payless shoes?

It's not any cheap shoes. It's those canvas shoes/slippers with the rubber shoes.
They've been really popular lately. That's what I thought this thread was about.
I hear them referred to as Chinese shoes or Chinatown shoes.
In my area I've seen them sold for $2 and the highest I've ever seen them sold was in Chinatown for around $6.
They are cheaper than Payless stuff.

i was thinking that the Chinatown shoes would be either the black cloth w/ white sole kung foo shoes mostly worn by guys, or the girly netted slippers with flower designs over the front. the latter have been really trendy for the better part of a year.
so which is it? :)

i've seen a lot of ghettos girls wear
the kung foo shoes in all different colors.
to match their canvas belts.

Kung fu shoes are making a comeback?
I used to wear those. But they didn't have much arch support, so I stopped wearing them everywhere. They also got ragged quick.

I was talking about the first.
I've seen the second ones sold with them, but I didn't know that they were called the same.

It seemed like everyone and their mama was wearing it for a while.
I used to think they were slippers, but I've seen women dressed semi-formally wearing them out.
Are they supposed to be worn outside?

I used to wear the black maryjanes with the brown rubber bottoms nonstop because they're the damn shoes that fit decently.

chinatown price: 2 for $4.99. nordstrom price: $29.99.

I heard that those women's slippers with the netting (and often the sequinned flowers on them) are house shoes in China (and perhaps in other Asian countries as well). Not to be worn outside. I do not think they are cute to wear anywhere except inside the house.

Maybe that has to do with the fact that Chinatown IS dirty. Especially with the fish and the fish water they throw out onto the streets at the end of the day.
It's because they want the cheapest real estate in a city and usually that area is dirty.
