I just finished Secret of Mana for SuperNintendo and I'm looking for more 2+ player COOPERATIVE, role-playing or non-sport games either for

1. SuperNintendo
2. PlayStation I or II

Does anyone know of any on the level of Secret of Mana or better (though that would be impossible).

Also, does anyone know if Secret of Evermore is 2+ player cooperative play? If so, does one person have to be the dog?

Thanks.

for ps2:
baldur's gate: dark alliance 1 & 2 (both very good)
xmen legends (awesome)
champions of norrath (haven't played)
fallout: brotherhood of steel (haven't played)

the thing about these games tho, they are story lite and action heavy. i suspect that wasn't the case for secret of mana but i haven't played it so i can't say for sure. japanese rpgs tend to be more story and character driven, but US multiplayer console rpgs are mostly action oriented (single player games are a completely different story). not to say they aren't addictive and fun as hell, but i don't know if thats what ur looking for.

champions of norrath is actually better than dark alliance, imo.

*the maps are dynamically generated so it's a little different each time - better replayability.
*you have much more control over customizing your character and class choice - DA:1&2 only allows you certain pre-set characters.
*CoN can also be played online or networked, whatever the hell you call it for console games.

dark alliance was the first of its kind for the console. so it will always get a special spot from me. the 2nd one didn't correct the problems of the 1st and after playing d&d:heroes on xbox it was a bit of a letdown. but the weapon and armor upgrade system of the 2nd was pretty sweet.

iris, u're looking for japanese games, u may wanna look at shining tears. it isn't out yet and may still be action focused, but it's prolly still very different than US rpgs.

Hi Iris,

I have a friend who really likes Champions of Norrath. I've never played and couldn't tell you much about it, but I've been playing World or Warcraft. I don't know if you're looking for a console game over a computer game though.

oh, i hear ya. i still own both. i could be wrong but CoN used the same engine.

props to ism for the article find. the article reminded me about amplitude. that game is the shit. seriously. the higher levels may be a bit much for the average gamer, but they'll come w/ practice. it's a musical nonviolent game u can play 2 player but it's really more fun playing 1 player and trying to beat a friend's score. and getting a song down on the higher levels really gives u a sense of accomplishment. man, i gotta go home and play that game again...

Another friend also recommended I try Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 so I'm going to try that one out first and then probably Champions of Norrath.

Thanks guys.

She moved to California, so I can see how you could get confused.

I remember Secret of Mana. That game was dope!

(tangent alert, but in the end not really)

My friend and I play tested Super Tecmo Bowl for the SNES in early college, and for our troubles Tecmo gave us each a free copy of the game. I thought the game sucked when I play tested it (but didn't tell them that), so I brought the shrinkwrapped game to Electronics Boutique at the Santa Monica Place where they were selling that piece of shit game for like sixty or seventy fucking dollars--total rip off. I traded it in for Secret of Mana which was the same price but 20x more interesting and fun. Best trade I ever made. Whether playing solo or with two other people, Secret of Mana was a blast. Action RPG's are my game of choice. Square is awesome.

The only system I currently have at home is the Gamecube. Is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals similar to Secret of Mana?

p.s. This is the first time I've posted on yellowworld while buzzing in probably two years. Forgive my post if it's not the most coherent...=P

Ha ha funny guys.

First, I did not die.

Second, I moved back to NYC this past December. My boyfriend got a promotion and a transfer. My job is flexible enough that I can work from New York. I am very happy to be back although I miss the weather in Hermosa Beach.

Third, I believe Final Fantasy is built off of Secret of Mana and if they try to tell you differently, they're lying. Secret of Mana is the best cooperative 2+ player game built. I don't know why they didn't make the sequels on the same platform.

The sequel is Chrono Trigger. After that, Final Fantasy Anthologies - which in some platforms is Final Fantasy II and III - are made with the same characters as in Secret of Mana.

Rumour has it that Secret of Evermore is in the same family. However, I've not been able to lay my little paws on the game despite numerous bids on Ebay so I cannot confirm that yet.

Final Fantasy does not even begin to compare to Secret of Mana because battle is not done through physical contact but through a "battle screen" where you just choose dumbass techniques and "throw" them at the enemy. Plus the characters are half an inch high and look like bugs with no detail. The graphics are horrendous.

That being said, I've never played the Chrystal Chronicles version. Tell me how you like it when you're through.

secret of mana was a great game. but you cannot take anything from the other final fantasy games just because they were not real time battles. They are 2 different types of RPG's.
