As many of you probably know, the original WinAMP development team has left the company. No more major upgrades are expected just minor bug fixes. AOL has effectively killed yet another great program.
I've been using WinAMP for longer than I can remember. Along with AIM it's one of the only programs you can pretty much find on anyone's computer. It's appeal was in its simplicity. Alternatives tried to do too much. Plus being free didn't hurt either.

I imagine that most people will just stick with WinAMP until newer developments in digital audio render it obsolete.

I'm fooling around with foobar2000. It's free and has an even smaller footprint than WinAMP. It has loads of advanced features which can also be a problem. It's much more difficult to configure. Skinning options are very limited but I'm warming up to the simple bland interface. For those of you looking for a great audio player with lots of potential, give it a try.

i don't care too much about skinning and most other features aside from making playlists, and WinMedia Player has actually been pretty nice. i've been using it now for probably longer than i've ever used WinAMP. well integrated into Windows, of course. but that's only an option if you use Windows. its library feature is nice, too.

speaking of media software, i miss the days when QuickTime was actually cool. nowadays it just tries to hijack your computer as soon as you install it.

but yes, and not that i like Microsoft that much, with all the hype about how Microsoft is a monopoly and that it's bad for consumers, AOL can be just as bad. along with WinAMP, they also bought both Netscape AND ICQ and didn't do shit with either. well, they tried to make newer versions of Netscape, but they just couldn't catch up with IE anymore.

A lot of Windows users are using iTunes now... Even if you're not a fan of their music store, or any DRM'd music store, it's a fully functional MP3 player and encoder.

Quicktime on the PC is apparently much worse than on the Mac. If you want a good video player that can handle almost anything, VLC is available at videolan.org and it can play just about everything except the most recent Windows Media files.

the news of winamp's death are greatly exaggerated.

"No we weren't axed. We haven't even seen anyone with an axe. There was this one guy who came up to us to axe us a question, but that's about it."

lol I still use Winamp 2. Less bloat and I get to use DirectX audio plugins. Sounds pretty sweet once you put a filtering sidechain compressor on a buncha mp3s that have all been mastered differently.

I switch between media player and winamp. I don't know which I like better, but media player does have it's problems when it starts to lag my machine. (still haven't figured out why it does). I've been using winamp since ... i dunno, a long, long time ago.

i've always stayed with winamp 2.91. all the upgrades were a bit excessive. hogging up all the resources.
