got it from my monster asian american career newsletter:
http://diversity.monster.com/asam/articles/lawyers/
so basically the gist of the article:
we are underrepresented as lawyers, judges, litigators...etc, but we are ok represented in law schools [relative to the population].

Actually, as far as I know, Asian Americans are not underrepresented as junior Associates at law firms. However, they are underrepresented as partners and as general counsel for large corporations. Only 2 Fortune 500 Companies have Asian American GCs. Additionally, only 1 of the AmLaw Top 200 law firms is headed by an Asian American Managing Partner, William F. Lee of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr.
I attended a conference where Don Liu, General Counsel for IKON Office SOlutions spoke. He is one of the two aforementioned Asian American GC. He pondered why this was the case.
I think a large part of it is the time effect, but another large part is the glass ceiling.

god damn it. i dropped the idea of going into the business world and decided on law so i wouldn't have to deal with the glass ceiling. i guess that was naive of me.

It's everywhere.
That's why we have to fight actively for change.

I'm in law school and I have to say I feel very much a minority. Our class of 2007 has 6 asians (two filipinos, two chinese, one korean, and me the vietnamese one). As for the rest of the law school, there are about as many asians there as there are us in our first year (did that make sense?). APALSA, an asian law student organization, is headed by a caucasian guy - although, i must say, he is doing a great job (his wife is japanese). The lawyers i have come in contact with since starting here have mostly been white or (being in San Antonio,TX) hispanic. Hopefully, we will begin to rise in numbers by the time i get into the legal world. if not, i'll just start my own asian firm!! :-)

interesting. who's your aunt?

wtf? so what if his wife is japanese? it doesn't mean that he understands the issues that asian law students/lawyers face vicariously through his wife - and is his wife even in the legal field?
sorry to sound so harsh, but i've been in api groups where the leadership was non-asian also, and it's always annoyed me.
in response to ism's post: as judicial officers, too - we're underrepresented. if i can name the asian judges on the bench, isn't that indicative of something?

The honorable Ruth Kwan! I always remember how she told me she once busted a dude for whacking off in a gap changing room. Can't remember WHY she told me, but oh well.
also, I'd agree that it's odd to have a white guy leading APALSA...but if there are only about 10 apa in the school and none of them want to do it then what can you do...but if they do want to and the guy doesn't want to step over, then it's like having fricken st. patrick be the head of the black panthers.

thank god my actions typically have smaller consequences than standing in front of a federal (well, state at the time) judge and replying "guilty your honor!" to charges that I was "indecent in a public area"
i've been in api groups where the leadership was non-asianThis is funny.
