So Valentine's day is coming up and amazingly, most of my friends just do not care for it. Single people, couples, everybody- they either get annoyed at it or don't really care about Valentine's day. Some even hate it because it is so commercialized. I know one couple that is not even celebrating it- the guy is going to play in some tennis tournament and the girl is going to hang out with her girlfriends and both of them are perfectly fine with it, they see it as another day.
So what do you think about it? Is there anything meaningful to this "holiday" to you or is it just an excuse to sell roses, cards, and chocolate?

oh yeah. good question.
i'm definitely over it.
the other day my friend called
me to complain about her boyfriend
not making v-day plans
and i was surprised that she still expected
something special, especially at our age.

Christmas + flowers + sex = Valentines day

don't forget chocolate!
I have to admit I'm a sucker for romantic gestures but I would hate to think that it is reserved for one day out of the year. So I don't view Valentine’s Day as being anymore special than any other day. However, when I have gotten flowers or whatever for Valentine's I still thought it was sweet, just not any sweeter than any other day I may have received them.

aw, that's cute. :P
well, this is my first v-day with my current bf, so i think we'll do something kinda special, but not super-extravagant or expensive. we haven't actually planned anything yet. i do think it's stupid how there's an actual day set aside for this kind of thing, tho.
last v-day, when i was newly single, i went with two girl friends to santa barbara for the weekend. girls weekend, forget the boys!
Valentine's is the one day you're allowed to get mushy.
What is there to do in Santa Barbara?
My brother isn't celebrating Valentine's Day with his wife because he said "Every day is Valentine's Day for us!"
As for me, I'm going to eat a bar of Ghirardelli's milk chocolate.

I'd go all out for my Valentine's, totally spoil her and make her feel special- only problem is... I don't have one. Well I guess that means I can get something at Best Buy then.

I understand the backlash against rampant commercialization but I would also caution about cutting out ritual and celebration completely. I don't see anything wrong with Valentines Day itself or any celebration relating to it.

the only person i give v day cards to is my mama and usually cook for her or something...i cant be arsed with all the hooha urrounding it and the petty competitiveness that it encourages between friends/partners/work colleagues etc...it just gets so stressful, particularly when you consider how many other things we are supposed to celebrate...you just never stop and it does cost..i mean not to sound like the grinch but sometimes i really do not want to spend money on some shitty card ya know!!
hmmm this may explain why i have spent the last 3 vdays single :frown:

Awww, don't be down on yourself. :frown: It's not you it's them. If I were a guy I'd date you in a minute b/c you constantly have me laughing like a crazy person in my office. I swear all my co-workers think I'm loony. But we will both be single and happy for this V-day and to hell with what everybody else thinks!
I can't remember how many valentine's days have come and gone with me being single. Still I don't think there is anything wrong with being alone. There is a difference between being alone and being lonely.
That said I remember one Valentine in New York. I came out of a Clint Eastwood movie (alone, yes, and now perhaps it is clear why...). It was a foggy night. I looked up, and the entire Manhattan night sky turned pinkish red from the spot lights on the Empire State Building. That was a great sight. Only in New York.
By the way, the whole 'v day' thing reminds me of the V Movement (http://www.vday.org/main.html)...

This is kinda depressing reading this; it sounds like you two are just all "relationshipped" out of luck, i.e. a bad run of love luck. It almost seems like you two are resigned to your fate of being single. You two should run out, go crazy, find a hot, tall, perhaps 6'1 chinese guy who has an odd infatuation with pokemon, totally hook up with him, and get your love juices flowing again.
and I'd recommend looking in my area. I heard the men here kick ass and have huge cocks.
(j/k  well, except about the cock part)

Valentine's day is kinda lost on me. There have been way too many stories of guys/gals who tell the person they like that they like them. And it almost always gives into failure.
But in grade school, I liked it for the candy treats.

Awww, how precious. Just give everybody one of those nasty tasting candy hearts with the insipid message, and you'll be straight.

what's a candy gram?
I believe what mrazntre is referring to is receiving candy via post or some other delivery service. For instance, instead of delivering flowers they delivery candy.

actually... it's the junior truncated version.
I'm talking about in middleschool and high school when they would sell $0.50 candygrams to fund the V-day dance or something and you could send one to your "potential" or gf/bf. The student body would go around passing them out during 3rd period or something like that.

I remember that in middle school, ppl sent their candy grams to their friends. Then when high school came around, the candy grams were given to close friends and potential gf/bfs.
But I remember someone who had written a really F-ed up candy gram to this girl to piss her off. So be glad you don't get shit like that.
